Cropping practices have a great potential to improve soil quality through changes in soil biota. Yet the effects of these soil\uffe2\uff80\uff90improving cropping systems on soil fungal communities are not well known. Here, we analysed soil fungal communities using standardized measurements in 12 long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term experiments and 20 agricultural treatments across Europe. We were interested in whether the same practices (i.e., tillage, fertilization, organic amendments and cover crops) applied across different sites have predictable and repeatable effects on soil fungal communities and guilds. The fungal communities were very variable across sites located in different soil types and climatic regions. The arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) were the fungal guild with most unique species in individual sites, whereas plant pathogenic fungi were most shared between the sites. The fungal communities responded to the cropping practices differently in different sites and only fertilization showed a consistent effect on AMF and plant pathogenic fungi, whereas the responses to tillage, cover crops and organic amendments were site, soil and crop\uffe2\uff80\uff90species specific. We further show that the crop yield is negatively affected by cropping practices aimed at improving soil health. Yet, we show that these practices have the potential to change the fungal communities and that change in plant pathogenic fungi and in AMF is linked to the yield. We further link the soil fungal community and guilds to soil abiotic characteristics and reveal that especially Mn, K, Mg and pH affect the composition of fungi across sites. In summary, we show that fungal communities vary considerably between sites and that there are no clear directional responses in fungi or fungal guilds across sites to soil\uffe2\uff80\uff90improving cropping systems, but that the responses vary based on soil abiotic conditions, crop type and climatic conditions.

The Focus Area \u2013 North Hessian Hill Country. is located in the northern part of Hesse, Germany, encompassing two primary research sites: Neu-Eichenberg and Dom\u00e4ne Frankenhausen. This region is characterized by its rolling hills landscape, standing at an elevation ranging from 150 to 600 meters (Hohes Gras 614.8 m above sea level), which significantly influences the local climate and soil conditions.\nThe terrain is predominantly formed by loess and clay, with soil types primarily consisting of Luvisols and ###, which are typically fertile but require careful management to prevent compression and ensure sustainability. The soils have a high silt content and a low to moderate clay content, with organic matter levels in the topsoil (0-25 cm) generally around 1.5-3% indicating a good potential for agricultural productivity. Altough it is partly relatively dry in the region.
\nAccording to the K\u00f6ppen\u2013Geiger Climate Classification, the climate of the North Hessian Hill Country. is classified as Cfb, i.e., warm temperate and fully humid, with warm summers, with an average annual precipitation of approximately 600-800 mm and an average annual temperature of around 9.3\u00b0C (reference period 1991-2020). Recent decades have seen a slight increase in temperature reflecting broader patterns of climate change that can affect farming practices and ecosystem resilience in the area.
\nThe focus of research in Neu-Eichenberg and Dom\u00e4ne Frankenhausen includes the development and testing of sustainable agricultural practices tailored to the conditions of the North Hessian Hill Country. This involves the integration of agroforestry systems, the optimization of crop rotations to enhance soil health and biodiversity, and the implementation of organic farming techniques to reduce chemical inputs.
\nSpecific long-term experiments conducted in this focus area include studies on the impact of diversified cropping systems on soil fertility and crop yield stability, as well as the efficacy of various conservation tillage practices in preserving soil moisture and preventing erosion.
\nThe two research sites in the area manage in total over 336 hectares of arable land, with Soilscores ranging from 38-87 supporting a wide range of field trials and observational studies aimed at improving agricultural sustainability and resilience in the face of changing climate conditions. These efforts are crucial for developing adaptive strategies that can ensure food security and environmental protection in the North Hessian Hill Country and beyond.

It is characterized by several experimental cycles with different cropping system comparisons. Soil tillage is the consistent factor since the start of the experiment. Crop rotation and irrigation were adjusted according to the research questions. Cycle 1 (2000-2006) investigated the potential of reducing soil tillage by comparing two cropping systems, one with and one without ploughing with different crops per system. Cycle 2 (2007-2018) investigated the potential to produce arable crops for biomass by comparing eight cropping systems. The factors were crop rotation, i) sole cropped maize every year and ii) 4-year rotation with one crop per year with maize-winter rye/sorghum-winter triticale-alfalfa clover grass mixture (all harvested for green biomass); soil tillage (ploughing and no-tillage); irrigation (rainfed and irrigated). Cycle 3 (2019-2023) investigated the potential of diversification comparing 16 cropping systems. The factors were rotation with all crops present every year (fully phased) with i) sole cropped maize, ii) sole cropped soybean, iii) maize-soybean sequence, and iv) maize-soybean-wheat-alfalfa clover grass mixture sequence); soil tillage (ploughing and reduced tillage); irrigation (rainfed and irrigated). The experimental cycles can be analyzed separately for specific research questions and for calibrating/validating models, and the long term effects of soil tillage, rotation and irrigation can be analyzed. We collected biological data (benthic invertebrate taxa abundances) and chemical data (pesticide residues and nutrient concentrations) as well as data on environmental parameters (e.g., conductivity, pH and habitat type) for 154 samples within the time period of 2015-2021. Benthic invertebrates were sampled with a hand net (mesh size 500 \u03bcm) using a habitat-specific, area standardized method. Sampled habitats were: fine particulate organic matter (FPOM), coarse particulate organic matter (CPOM), submersed macrophytes, reed, flooded terrestrial vegetation, overhanging terrestrial vegetation, stones, and dead wood. Mixed water samples (5 L) for chemical analysis of nutrients and pesticides were taken by grab sampling from four to six points around the shoreline. The dataset was analysed in order to evaluate effects of agricultural and environmental stressors like habitat diversity, pesticide and nutrient contamination on diversity and structure of benthic invertebrate communities. During the second phase, organic fertilization was applied (saw dust or wheat straw). The aim is to test the effect of precrop plant symbiotic functional group on following crop AM fungal diversity and abundance. Four crop plant species were used to have a combination of all symbiotic groups: spring canola (Brassica napus cv. Medicus, NPZ, non-rhizobial / non-AM), withe lupine (Lupinus albus cv. Energy, Feldsaaten Freudenberger, rhizobial / non-AM), spring barley (Hordeum vulgare cv. Barke, Saatzucht Breun, non rhizobial/AM) faba bean (Vicia faba cv. Tiffany, NPZ, rhizobial / AM). The succeeding crop was winter barley (Hordeum vulgare, cv. Antonella, Nordsaat Saatzucht, non-rhizobial / AM). The AMF community structure was analyzed by amplicon sequencing of the D1-D2 region of the fungal LSU (28S) rRNA gene using the primers LR2rev (5'-GAAAAGAACTTTGAAAA-3') and LR3 (5'-CCGTGTTTCAAGACG-3'). The taxonomy and sequence for each sequence variant is included. The sequences were generated using the primers LR2rev (5'-GAAAAGAACTTTGAAAA-3') and LR3 (5'-CCGTGTTTCAAGACG-3'). The results revealed that the mycorrhizal precrop symbiotic group (AM or not AM), but not the rhizobial one (N2-fixer or not N2-fixer), affected the richness and composition of AM fungi in the soil. The effect on composition, but not on richness, persisted in the following crop, demonstrating a legacy effect of precrop functional group. However, this effect was weaker than that of contemporary factors such as nutrient addition. AMF community composition correlated to decreasing crop yield after AM precrops. Phylogenetic analyses revealed that differences in AMF communities pertained at deep phylogenetic levels. These findings suggest negative plant-soil feedbacks within the AM symbiosis in agro-ecosystems typical of western Europe, driven by the consistent selection of deep clades of AM fungi. \n\nIt is a typical site of the glacial moraine landscape of the North German Lowland approx. 62 m above sea level. The site of the experimental station is from flat to easily incline. Typical soil types are Albic and Ortic Luvisols, Cambic and Luvic Arenosols. The soils are far from groundwater with mean clay content of around 5-10% in the top soil (0-25 cm). Carbon content, natural pH and the base-saturation are low. The topsoil (0-25 cm) contains around 1% humus. The soil is free of lime. It tends to acidification and requires regular liming.
\n\nThe weather is characterised by a continental-influenced humid inland climate with an average of 548 mm precipitation and 8.9\u00b0C annual temperature (reference period 1981-2010). Compared to the period 1951-1980, temperature and rainfall have increased by 0.7\u00b0C and 19 mm, respectively. An increase of periods of pronounced pre-summer drought is the consequence of the changing climate.
\n\nThe current focus of the trials is research on climate-adapted and diversity-promoting agricultural systems through the implementation of new crops in crop rotations, conservation tillage and reduced use of pesticides, especially herbicides.
\nThe research station M\u00fcncheberg is in charge of two long-term field trials, the \"M\u00fcncheberger N\u00e4hrstoffsteigerungsversuch V140/00\u201d (https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-8fhj-r52g) and the field model trial \u201cKrumenaufbau\u201d V210/02.
\nIt manages 42 ha arable land. In addition to the classic field trials, the research station supports agricultural research in the agricultural landscape such as the landscape laboratory patchCrop (https://doi.org/10.4228/zalf-ztwg-fh58).
Located around 100 km north of Berlin, ZALF operates the Dedelow research station. The Dedelow Site is enclosed by Focus Area Quillow (https://doi.org/10.4228/zalf.7161-ft27). At this site, household (for instance CarboZALF) and third-party funded research projects are carried out, scientific measuring equipment is operated through ZALF, like the FluxCrane for measuring greenhouse gases, the ZALF weather station and Lysimeter and ajoining projects like Tereno (https://www.tereno.net). A big focus is on living labs like the AgroScapeLab Quillow (https://comm.zalf.de/sites/aslq/SitePages/Home.aspx).
\nDedelow is located in the northeast German glacial landscape and is characterized by a domed ground moraine. This is particularly evident in the small-scale heterogeneous soil properties and changing terrain profiles (knolls, depressions). Climatically, Dedelow is a continentally influenced location with 500 mm annual precipitation and an annual mean temperature of 8.7 \u00b0C, which is characterized by frequent pre-summer drought.
\nThe dominant soil type is para-brown earth. Dedelow is one of the better sites in the Uckermark with a soil index of 35 - 50. The composition of the topsoil (10% clay - 30% silt - 60% sand) corresponds to a sandy loam, the supply of basic nutrients is in the B/C range.
\nThe Dedelow trial station has the personnel and field trial technology to implement different cultivation systems in different plot sizes. There is also close contact with farmers in the region through field days and long-term cooperation.
