It has a significant influence on soil temperature and soil moisture content. The exposure of an area therefore directly affects the heat energy that can be extracted from the ground by geothermal heat collector systems. Slopes exposed to the south are usually characterised by more intense sunlight and lower soil moisture levels during the summer months. In the winter months, the stronger sunlight can favor snow melting and thus lead to higher moisture levels of the soil. In contrast, northern slopes are thermally disadvantaged. The lower sun exposure promotes higher soil moisture levels.
