This knowledge gap poses a major hurdle in robustly projecting changes in the global hydrologic cycle. For this reason, here we review the different processes by which atmospheric CO2 concentration affects plant transpiration, the several uncertainties related to the complex physiological and radiative processes involved, and the knowledge gaps which need to be filled in order to improve predictions of plant transpiration. Although there is a high degree of certainty that rising CO2 will impact plant transpiration, the exact nature of this impact remains unclear due to complex interactions between CO2 and climate, and key aspects of plant morphology and physiology. The interplay between these factors has substantial consequences not only for future climate and global vegetation, but also for water availability needed for sustaining the productivity of terrestrial ecosystems. Future changes in global plant transpiration in response to enhanced CO2 are expected to be driven by water availability, atmospheric evaporative demand, plant physiological processes, emergent plant disturbances related to increasing temperatures, and the modification of plant physiology and coverage. Considering the universal sensitivity of natural and agricultural systems to terrestrial water availability we argue that reliable future projections of transpiration is an issue of the highest priority, which can only be achieved by integrating monitoring and modeling efforts to improve the representation of CO2 effects on plant transpiration in the next generation of earth system models. \u00a9 2022 The Authors", "keywords": ["0301 basic medicine", "2. The paper critically examines to what extent smallholder rubber production actually led to forest conversion in West Kalimantan (Indonesia) and neighbouring Sarawak (Malaysia). The paper concludes that the introduction of rubber in West Kalimantan contributed little to encroachment into primary forest. Rather, it apparently favoured the restoration of forests in areas where land use became less intensive. This happens only where specific conditions in the local context allowed this to take place. The findings suggest that tree technologies should be preferred when trying to improve local agriculture. Isoprene is both deposited and formed in soil, where it can be consumed by some soil microbes, although much remains to be understood about isoprene consumption in tropical soils. In this study, isoprene-degrading bacteria from soils associated with tropical plants were investigated by cultivation and cultivation-independent approaches. Soil samples were taken from beneath selected framework forest trees and economic crops at different seasons, and isoprene degradation in soil microcosms was measured after 96 h of incubation. Isoprene losses were 4\uffe2\uff80\uff9331% and 15\uffe2\uff80\uff9352% in soils subjected to a lower (7.2 \uffc3\uff97 105 ppbv) and a higher (7.2 \uffc3\uff97 106 ppbv) concentration of isoprene, respectively. Sequencing of 16S rRNA genes revealed that bacterial communities in soil varied significantly across plant categories (framework trees versus economic crops) and the presence of isoprene, but not with isoprene concentration or season. Eight isoprene-degrading bacterial strains were isolated from the soils and, among these, four belong to the genera Ochrobactrum, Friedmanniella, Isoptericola and Cellulosimicrobium, which have not been previously shown to degrade isoprene.</p>", "keywords": ["0301 basic medicine", "2. The area of the stand was 23.2 ha and 692 m\u00b3 of wood was harvested during the thinning operation. Three different timber harvesting methods with extended skid trail distances of approx. 40 m (ES) were investigated and compared to a fully mechanized system with conventional skid trail distances of approx. 20 m (CS) in a time study with a total of 150 recorded hours. Moreover, the residual stand damage and the marked trees remaining on the area were recorded after the harvesting operation. The main table contains the index of the data collection, which consists of seven data sets and one video. the data about the time study are divided in the different work steps: felling and processing with harvester (\u201cTime study harvester\u201d), forwardering (\u201cTime study forwarder\u201d), motormanual felling with chainsaw (\u201cTime study chainsaw\u201d), pulling down trees that have been hanging in other trees when felled with a chainsaw (\u201cTime study chainsaw hanger\u201d) and winching with cable winch (\u201cTime study winching\u201d). The data set \u201cWood harvest damage\u201d contains the recordings of the damage caused by the different timber harvesting methods to the remaining stands.
