Study sites were located on the Hamburger Hallig, on the Western coast of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Between 2006 and 2009, salt marshes that have been under four levels of livestock density (0, 1-2 sheep/ha, 3-4 sheep/ha, 10 sheep/ha) for over 20 years were sampled using light traps and photoeclectors. Plant and moth species richness were highest under low stocking densities, moth species richness, however, showed no difference between low stocking densities and abandonment. Species richness of moths was only weakly correlated with vegetation parameters (species richness, vegetation height, cover and litter). Using additive diversity partitioning we show that no single grazing treatment harbored all recorded moth species and that grazing increases habitat heterogeneity within each treatment. Additionally, we show that moths react more sensitively to grazing than plants, and that therefore assessments of plant species richness in salt marshes do not allow conclusions on invertebrate diversity. For the evaluation of salt-marsh diversity, a multi-species approach should be favored combining plant and invertebrate assessments. A mosaic of abandoned sites and sites with low and intermediate stocking densities would benefit moth diversity in salt-marsh conservation. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Although this relationship has been widely contested, it is rarely tested for soil invertebrate fauna, an important component of terrestrial biodiversity. We tested disturbance-diversity relationships for soil meso- and macrofauna in a salt marsh where periodic sea water inundation and cattle grazing occur as stressors. We hypothesized a unimodal inundation frequency-diversity relationship, whereas we expected grazing to overrule the effects of inundation frequency due to its large effects on the habitat of soil fauna. We found a negative relationship between inundation frequency and diversity at the ungrazed sites and no relationship at the grazed sites. Moreover, we found a negative relationship between community biomass and diversity for soil fauna that may have caused this negative disturbance-diversity relationship. Community biomass at the intermediate inundation frequency increased due to the dominance of Orchestia gammarellus (a macro-detritivore species), which could exploit low quality litters at the ungrazed sites. We highlight that the negative relationship between faunal community biomass and faunal diversity may influence disturbance-diversity relationships and illustrate that total biomass distribution of feeding guilds of soil fauna can improve our understanding of the soil fauna response to stressors in salt marshes. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
COLLEMBOLA", "DYNAMICS", "0106 biological sciences", "Salt marsh", "productivity", "Feeding guilds", "SUCCESSION", "COMPETITION", "01 natural sciences", "COEXISTENCE", "RICHNESS", "patterns", "SDG 14 - Life Below Water", "14. Serious games are becoming a popular means to support decision-makers who are responsible for the planning and management of urban water systems. This is evident in the increasing number of articles about serious games in recent years. However, the effectiveness of these games in improving decision-making and the quality of their design and evaluation approaches remains unclear. To understand this better, in this paper, we identified 41 serious games covering the urban water cycle. Of these games, 15 were shortlisted for a detailed review. By using common rational decision-making and game design phases from literature, we evaluated and mapped how the shortlisted games contribute to these phases. Our research shows that current serious game applications have multiple limitations: lack of focus on executing the initial phases of decision-making, limited use of storytelling and adaptive game elements, use of low-quality evaluation design and explicit indicators to measure game outcomes, and lastly, lack of attention to cognitive processes of players playing the game. Addressing these limitations is critical for advancing purposeful game design supporting UWM.
Serious games", "Design", "Long-term planning", "0211 other engineering and technologies", "Water", "700", "02 engineering and technology", "Decision analysis", "01 natural sciences", "6. Microbe-microbe cotransport might enable nonmotile bacteria to be carried with motile partners to enhance their dispersion and reduce their deposition in porous systems. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the enhancement in the dispersion of nonmotile bacteria (Mycobacterium gilvum VM552, a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-degrader, and Sphingobium sp. D4, a hexachlorocyclohexane-degrader, through micrometer-sized pores near the exclusion-cell-size limit, in the presence of motile Pseudomonas putida G7 cells. For this purpose, we used bioreactors equipped with two chambers that were separated with membrane filters with 3, 5, and 12 μm pore sizes and capillary polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microarrays (20 μm × 35 μm × 2.2 mm). The cotransport of nonmotile bacteria occurred exclusively in the presence of a chemoattractant concentration gradient, and therefore, a directed flow of motile cells. We ask how large herbivore grazing affects the direction of plant￢ﾀﾓplant interactions along an environmental gradient in a salt marsh.
Location
Grazed (cattle) and ungrazed salt marshes of the Dutch Wadden Sea island Schiermonnikoog. Here, patches of tall plant communities, dominated by the tough, unpalatable species Juncus maritimus Lam., are found alternating with low￢ﾀﾐstatured, intensively grazed plant communities.
Methods
Along the inundation gradient, we measured plant species composition and plant species traits (specific leaf area, specific root length, maximum height and abundance) inside and outside J.ￂﾠmaritimus patches in grazed and ungrazed areas. In addition, we measured soil structure parameters (bulk density, soil porosity, clay depth), multiple limiting conditions for plant growth (soil salinity, soil redox, plant canopy light interception), plant biomass, presence of herbivores and abundance of soil macro￢ﾀﾐdetritivores.
Results
Under grazing, the palatable grasses Elytrigia atherica (Link) Kerguￃﾩlen and Festuca rubra L. were positively associated with J.ￂﾠmaritimus, while shade￢ﾀﾐintolerant Puccinellia maritima (Huds.) Parl. and Juncus gerardiiￂﾠ Loisel. were negatively associated with this species. Furthermore, macro￢ﾀﾐdetritivore presence was higher inside J.ￂﾠmaritimus patches. In ungrazed areas E.ￂﾠatherica and F.ￂﾠrubra were negatively associated with J.ￂﾠmaritimus, while P.ￂﾠmaritima and J.ￂﾠgerardii were rare. In both grazed and ungrazed conditions the directions of species associations were independent of the inundation gradient. Analysis of species traits and abiotic conditions suggested that associational resistance (a facilitation type) was important in grazed areas. In ungrazed areas, light competition was the likely dominant process.
Conclusions
The direction of species associations within these salt marsh communities was strongly affected by grazing, not by the underlying stress gradient. Measurement of species traits indicated that plant￢ﾀﾓplant interactions shifted from competitive to facilitative under grazing. Besides grazing, cross￢ﾀﾐtrophic facilitation of soil disturbing macro￢ﾀﾐdetritivores may play an important ￢ﾀﾓ thus far ignored ￢ﾀﾓ role in structuring plant communities.

Plant traits", "2. We observed that the main differences in the bacterial communities were not related to land-use type, but rather to soil factors. An exception was the bacterial community of pine forest soils (PFS), which was clearly different from all other sites. PFS had lowest bacterial abundance, lowest numbers of operational taxonomic units (OTUs), lowest soil pH, and highest C : N ratios. C : N ratio strongly influenced bacterial community structure and was the main factor separating PFS from other fields. For the sites other than PFS, phosphate was the most important factor explaining the differences in bacterial communities across fields. Firmicutes were the most dominant group in almost all fields, except in PFS and deciduous forest soils (DFS). In PFS, Alphaproteobacteria was most represented, while in DFS, Firmicutes and Gammaproteobacteria were both highly represented. Interestingly, Bacillii and Clostridium OTUs correlated with pH and phosphate, which might explain their high abundance across many of the Dutch soils. Numerous bacterial groups were highly correlated with specific soil factors, suggesting that they might be useful as indicators of soil status.
land use change", "DNA", " Bacterial", "0301 basic medicine", "RNA 16S", "polymerase chain reaction", "soil nitrogen", "DNA sequence", "soil microorganism", "electrokinesis", "chemistry", "phylogeny", "Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction", "soil", "Soil", "03 medical and health sciences", "NIOO", "RNA", " Ribosomal", " 16S", "genetics", "soil carbon", "Phylogeny", "Soil Microbiology", "phosphate", "biodiversity", "Alphaproteobacteria", "Netherlands", "growth", " development and aging", "2. The experiment included seven treatments: organic manure, half organic manure N plus half fertilizer N, fertilizer NPK, fertilizer NP, fertilizer NK, fertilizer PK, and the control (without fertilization). N fertilization greatly increased soil nitrification potential, and mineral N fertilizer had a greater impact than organic manure, while N deficiency treatment (PK) had no significant effect. AOB community structure was analyzed by PCR-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) of the amoA gene, which encodes the ￎﾱ subunit of ammonia monooxygenase. DGGE profiles showed that the AOB community was more diverse in N-fertilized treatments than in the PK-fertilized treatment or the control, while one dominant band observed in the control could not be detected in any of the fertilized treatments. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the DGGE bands derived from N-fertilized treatments belonged to Nitrosospira cluster 3, indicating that N fertilization resulted in the dominance of Nitrosospira cluster 3 in soil. These results demonstrate that long-term application of N fertilizers could result in increased soil nitrification potential and the AOB community shifts in soil. Our results also showed the different effects of mineral fertilizer N versus organic manure N; the effects of P and K on the soil AOB community; and the importance of balanced fertilization with N, P, and K in promoting nitrification functions in arable soils.

2. Four FBGs were exposed to gamma radiation during four irradiation sessions at a 5.3 kGy/h dose rate. The FBGs showed a linear Bragg wavelength shift with the received dose with a mean sensitivity of ￢ﾈﾒ3.95 pm/kGy at 43 ￂﾰC. The increased temperature provides a rise in the sensitivity: it reached ￢ﾈﾒ10.6 pm/kGy at 58 ￂﾰC. After irradiation, the FBGs showed partial recovery, which increased with the received dose. Furthermore, the FBG￢ﾀﾙs reflection power decreased with the dose. Unlike the Al-hole centre, known to have only radiation-induced formation mechanisms, the E’ seems to possess a response to gamma dose characterised by predominantly radiation-induced annihilation at lower doses (about 1000 Gy) and a predominantly radiation-induced formation at higher doses, at least in our investigated dose range (up to 40 kGy). We propose these dose response mechanisms to be governed by electron trapping by E’ itself and by hole trapping by the oxygen deficiency centre (ODC), known to be the main precursor of E’. We show that the ESR signals of both defects are linearly correlated during their formation as well as during their dissociation under both irradiation and sunlight exposure. We further show that there is a clear correlation between the light sensitive Al-hole centres (also known as the Al-hole bleachable part), and the amount of E’ produced after prolonged light exposure. This indicates a correlation between the holes released from Al-hole and those trapped by one of the two electrons in the ODCs producing E’. As such, the origin of the unbleachable part of the Al-hole signal resides in the availability of oxygen deficiency centres which are also dependent on the accumulated gamma dose.
03 medical and health sciences", "0302 clinical medicine", "electron spin resonance; E' centres; Al-hole centres; gamma dose response; mechanisms; bleaching; correlation", "01 natural sciences", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3548796
Open AccessThis work has been sponsored by Fonds De La Recherche Scientifique – FRNS (T.0163.19 'RADPOF'). Understanding the commonalities and differences in how signalling molecules function in two remote branches of the tree of life may shed light on the reasons these molecules were originally recruited for intercellular signalling. Here we review the plant function of three highly studied animal intercellular signalling molecules, namely glutamate, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and melatonin. By considering both their signalling function in plants and their broader physiological function, we suggest that molecules with an original function as key metabolites or active participants in reactive ion species scavenging have a high chance of becoming intercellular signalling molecules. Naturally, the evolution of machinery to transduce a message across the plasma membrane is necessary. This cotransport was more intense in the presence of larger pores (12 μm) and strong chemoeffectors (γ-aminobutyric acid). The mechanism that governed cotransport at the cell scale involved mechanical pushing and hydrodynamic interactions.
This fact is demonstrated by three other well-studied animal intercellular signalling molecules, namely serotonin, dopamine, and acetylcholine, for which there is currently no evidence that they act as intercellular signalling molecules in plants.

0301 basic medicine", "0303 health sciences", "signalling molecules", "plant physiology", "QH301-705.5", "Science", "Q", "R", "Plant Biology", "Glutamic Acid", "Plants", "03 medical and health sciences", "Journal Article", "reactive ion species", "Medicine", "Animals", "comparative biology", "Biology (General)", "metabolism", "gamma-Aminobutyric Acid", "Melatonin", "Signal Transduction
https://doi.org/PMC10281673
Chemotactic Bacteria Facilitate the Dispersion of Nonmotile Bacteria through Micrometer-Sized Pores in Engineered Porous Media
Recent research has demonstrated that chemotactic bacteria can disperse inside microsized pores while traveling toward favorable conditions. This cotransport was more intense in the presence of larger pores (12 μm) and strong chemoeffectors (γ-aminobutyric acid). The mechanism that governed cotransport at the cell scale involved mechanical pushing and hydrodynamic interactions. Chemotaxis-mediated cotransport of bacterial degraders and its implications in pore accessibility opens new avenues for the enhancement of bacterial dispersion in porous media and the biodegradation of heterogeneously contaminated scenarios.
Chemotactic Factors", "Pseudomonas putida", "Chemotaxis", "Bioaccessibility", "01 natural sciences", "Microbe-microbe cotransport", "Dimethylpolysiloxanes", "Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons", "Micrometer-sized pores", "Porosity", "Hexachlorocyclohexane", "gamma-Aminobutyric Acid", "Hitchhiking", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences
https://pubs.acs.org/doi/pdf/10.1021/acs.est.2c03149
https://doi.org/PMC9535858
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/Environmental%20Science%20%26amp%3B%20Technology

[[[-17.5, 12.3], [-17.5, 16.7], [-11.4, 16.7], [-11.4, 12.3], [-17.5, 12.3
Africa
Western Africa
Senegal
This harmonized set of soil parameter estimates for Senegal and The Gambia. It was derived from the Soil and Terrain Database for Senegal and The Gambia (SENSOTER ver. 1.0) and the ISRIC-WISE soil profile database, using standardized taxonomy-based pedotransfer (taxotransfer) procedures.

The land surface of the study area, covering some 200 800 km2, has been characterized using 149 unique SOTER units. Each SOTER unit consists of up to four different soil components. In so far as possible, each soil component has been characterized by a regionally representative profile, selected and classified by national soil experts. Conversely, in the absence of any measured legacy data, soil components were characterized using synthetic profiles for which only the FAO-Unesco (1988) classification is known.

Soil components in SENSOTER have been characterized using 90 profiles of which 34 are synthetic. The latter represent some 37 per cent of the territory. Comprehensive sets of measured attribute data are not available for most of the measured profiles (56) collated in SENSOTER. Consequently, to permit modelling, gaps in the soil analytical data have been filled using consistent taxotransfer procedures. Modal soil parameter estimates necessary to populate the taxotransfer procedure were derived from statistical analyses of soil profiles held in the ISRIC-WISE database. The current procedure only considers profiles in WISE that have FAO soil unit names identical to those mapped for SOTER-Senegal (41) and that originate from the Tropics (n= 4510).

Parameter estimates are presented for 18 soil variables by soil unit for fixed depth intervals of 0.2 m to 1 m depth. Thes include: organic carbon, total nitrogen, pH(H2O), CECsoil, CECclay, base saturation, effective CEC, aluminium saturation, CaCO3 content, gypsum content, exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP), electrical conductivity (ECE), bulk density, content of sand, silt and clay, content of coarse fragments (less than 2 mm), and available water capacity (-33 kPa to -1.5 MPa). These attributes have been identified as being useful for agro-ecological zoning, land evaluation, crop growth simulation, modelling of soil carbon stocks and change, and analyses of global environmental change.

The current parameter estimates should be seen as best estimates based on the current selection of soil profiles and data clustering procedure. Taxotransfer rules have been flagged to provide an indication of the confidence in the derived data.

Soil parameter estimates are presented as summary files (in MS-Access format) which can be linked to the SENSOTER map using GIS, through the unique SOTER-unit code (NEWSUID).

The derived (secondary) soil data for Senegal and The Gambia are considered appropriate for exploratory studies at national scale (1:1 million); these should consider the full map unit composition.
zip
WWW:DOWNLOAD-1.0-ftp--download
WWW:LINK-1.0-http--related
calcium", "carbon", "cation exchange capacity", "electrical conductivity", "nitrogen", "organic matter", "bulk density", "soil profiles", "pH", "salinity", "texture", "water holding capacity", "nutrients", "Soil science", "Africa", "Western Africa", "Senegal", "Gambia
["Author
["PO Box 353
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/a6320590-0899-4b60-bf4d-f80282bbb72c"},
["1956-01-01T00:00:00Z", "2003-01-01T00:00:00Z
Die Daten zeigen Ergebnisse zur Überwachung der Radioaktivität im Boden mithilfe der sogenannten "Insitu-Gammaspektrometrie". This INSPIRE compliant data comes from the CARBIOSOL source data - Predicted Total Organic Carbon Contents - period 2004-2014. The quality of a soil can be assessed through the study of various physical, chemical or biological parameters. Among these parameters, soil organic carbon, which constitutes more than 50% of the mass of soil organic matter, is generally considered the main indicator of soil quality, both for its agricultural and environmental functions. This data layer maps the total organic carbon (TOC) content of soils under permanent crops and grasslands in the Walloon Region for the period 2004-2014. The layer was created by spatial modelling method developed by UCL in the framework of the CARBIOSOL convention. For more details on the mapping layers generated in the CARBIOSOL project, please refer to the metadata sheet documenting the data layer series. In each pixel, the total organic carbon (TOC) content is expressed in grams of carbon per kilogram of dry fine earth (gC/kg). The output of the model is a raster layer of TOC contents at 90 meters resolution and spatially continuous on the Walloon agricultural territory. This INSPIRE compliant data comes from the CARBIOSOL source data - Predicted Total Organic Carbon Contents - 2015-2019 period. The quality of a soil can be assessed through the study of various physical, chemical or biological parameters. Among these parameters, soil organic carbon, which constitutes more than 50% of the mass of soil organic matter, is generally considered the main indicator of soil quality, both for its agricultural and environmental functions. This data layer is the mapping of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) levels for soils under crops and permanent grassland in the Walloon Region for a period between 2015 and 2019. The layer was created by spatial modeling method developed by UCLouvain as part of the CARBIOSOL convention and then transmitted to REQUASUD for data processing 2015-2019. The average TOC levels observed for soils (surface horizons) under crops and permanent grassland over the period 2015-2019 were 1.33 gC/kg and 3.67 gC/kg respectively, according to the RéQuaSud database.
