Although accretion rates and the resulting surface elevation change largely determine the resilience of salt marshes to sea-level rise (SLR), the effect of livestock grazing on accretion rates has been little studied. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of livestock grazing on salt-marsh accretion rates. We hypothesise that accretion will be lower in grazed compared to ungrazed salt marshes. In four study sites along the mainland coast of the Wadden Sea (in the south-eastern North Sea), accretion rates, sediment deposition rates, and soil compaction of grazed and ungrazed marshes were analysed using the Cs-137 radionuclide dating method. Accretion rates were on average 11.6 mm yr(-1) during recent decades and thus higher than current and projected rates of SLR. Neither accretion nor sediment deposition rates were significantly different between grazing treatments. Meanwhile, soil compaction was clearly affected by grazing with significantly higher dry bulk density on grazed compared to ungrazed parts. Based on these results, we conclude that other factors influence whether grazing has an effect on accretion and sediment deposition rates and that the effect of grazing on marsh growth does not follow a direct causal chain. Although sediment fingerprinting has been applied with reasonable success, the deployment of this method remains associated with many issues and limitations.Seminars and debates were organised during a 4-day Thematic School in October 2021 to come up with concrete suggestions to improve the design and implementation of tracing methods.First, we suggest a better use of geomorphological information to improve study design. Researchers are invited to scrutinise all the knowledge available on the catchment of interest, and to obtain multiple lines of evidence regarding sediment source contributions. Second, we think that scientific knowledge could be improved with local knowledge and we propose a scale of participation describing different levels of involvement of locals in research. Third, we recommend the use of state-of-the-art sediment tracing protocols to conduct sampling, deal with particle size, and examine data before modelling and accounting for the hydro-meteorological context under investigation. Fourth, we promote best practices in modelling, including the importance of running multiple models, selecting appropriate tracers, and reporting on model errors and uncertainty. Fifth, we suggest best practices to share tracing data and samples, which will increase the visibility of the fingerprinting technique in geoscience. Here we give an interpretation of a large sedimentary succession at Izola mensa within the NW Hellas Basin rim. The succession comprises channel and barform packages which together demonstrate that river deposition was already well established &gt;3.7 Ga. The deposits mirror terrestrial analogues subject to low-peak discharge variation, implying that river deposition at Izola was subject to sustained, potentially perennial, fluvial flow. We employ the RAMMS (RApid Mass Movement Simulation) debris flow and avalanche model to back-calculate initial and flow conditions of recent flows in three gullies in Hale crater. We infer minimum release depths of 1.0&amp;amp;#8211;1.5 m and initial release volumes of 100&amp;amp;#8211;200 m&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;3&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;. Entrainment leads to final flow volumes that are 2.5&amp;amp;#8211;5.5 times larger than initially released, and entrainment is found necessary to match the observed flow deposits. Simulated mean cross-channel flow velocities decrease from 3&amp;amp;#8211;4 m s&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;-1&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; to ~1 m s&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;-1&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt; from release area to flow terminus, while flow depths generally decrease from 0.5&amp;amp;#8211;1 m to 0.1&amp;amp;#8211;0.2 m. The mean cross-channel erosion depth and deposition thicknesses are _0.1&amp;amp;#8211;0.3 m. Back-calculated dry-Coulomb friction ranges from 0.1 to 0.25 and viscous turbulent friction between 100&amp;amp;#8211;200 m s&amp;lt;sup&amp;gt;-2&amp;lt;/sup&amp;gt;, which are values similar to those of granular debris flows on Earth. These results suggest that recent flows in gullies are fluidized to a similar degree as are granular debris flows on Earth. Emphasis was given to the thermal properties of soils. Six representative sites in Mexico were selected in an area dominated by Andosols: a grassland site, four forested sites with different levels of degradation and an agricultural site. Soils were fractionated using ultrasonic energy until complete dispersion was achieved. The particle\uffe2\uff80\uff90size fractions were coarse sand, fine sand, silt, clay and particulate organic matter from the coarse sand sized fraction (POM\uffe2\uff80\uff90CS) and fine sand (POM\uffe2\uff80\uff90FS). Soil organic carbon decreased by 70% after forest conversion to cropland and long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term cultivation; forest cover loss resulted in a decrease in SOC of up to 60%. The grassland soil contained 45% more SOC than the cropland one. Soil organic carbon was mainly associated with the silt\uffe2\uff80\uff90size fraction; the most sensitive fractions to land\uffe2\uff80\uff90use change and forest cover depletion were POM followed by SOC associated with the silt and clay\uffe2\uff80\uff90sized fractions. Particulate organic matter can be used as an early indicator of SOC loss. The C lost from the clay and silt\uffe2\uff80\uff90sized fractions was thermally labile; therefore, the SOC stored in the more degraded forest soils was more recalcitrant (thermally resistant). In this pilot study, we targeted the Temiskaming Graben, in Eastern Canada, where recent and ongoing geophysical and sedimentological investigations have revealed recent activity along this ancient structure. The dataset compiled for this experimental study covers an area of nearly 147 square km across the provinces of Ontario and Quebec. For efficiency in terms of computational resources, we first performed cluster analysis on knickpoint location, identifying seven areas with a high density of disruptions along river profiles. We then performed more detailed morphometric analysis at 30 m resolution, identifying knickpoints along river profiles, calculating the hypsometric integral across the landscape with a moving window, and mapping and comparing lineaments with known structural features. The results of our workflow showed that these three techniques can be efficiently combined for neotectonic analysis, and the synergistic approach strengthens the reliability and accuracy of our results. Our research extends the application of morphometric analysis, commonly used for exploring areas with intense tectonism and high topography, to areas that are characterized by low relief and low or moderate tectonic activity. Subaqueous spreading is observed on gently inclined surfaces (typically &lt;3\u25e6) when sediment bodies experience a sudden reduction of shear strength along their basal plane during clay softening or liquefaction of sands or silty sand sediment. Historically, spreading has been associated with very large landslides, but many unknown aspects of these mass movements have yet to be clarified. Does spreading influences the large catastrophic failure? What are the sedimentological and morphological aspects that contribute in initiating this process? These are some of the research questions that spurred the present work. Here, we introduce a database that incorporates information from thirty-two case studies, and use this to provide key insights into the sedimentary and morphological aspects of subaqueous spreading that will assist in the identification of spreading elsewhere. We find that subaqueous spreading is most common along passive glacial margins, but is also observed along active margins. The occurrence of contourites interlayered with glaciogenic deposits is, in most cases, associated with landslides (or landslide complexes) with spreading morphology. The database shows that seismic loading is commonly suggested to be the dominant trigger mechanism, although more geotechnical observations and modelling analysis would be needed to support this conclusion. We compare subaqueous spreading with terrestrial spreading, in particular to earthquake-related lateral spreading and clay landslides. We find that subaqueous spreading shares the same driving processes and potentially also some of the trigger mechanisms that are associated with the terrestrial spreading cases.
