Soils are one of Earth\uffe2\uff80\uff99s largest reservoirs of ARGs, which are integral for soil microbial competition, and have potential implications for plant and human health. Yet, their diversity and global patterns remain poorly described. Here, we analyzed 285 ARGs in soils from 1012 sites across all continents and created the first global atlas with the distributions of topsoil ARGs.</p>                                Results                 <p>We show that ARGs peaked in high latitude cold and boreal forests. Climatic seasonality and mobile genetic elements, associated with the transmission of antibiotic resistance, were also key drivers of their global distribution. Dominant ARGs were mainly related to multidrug resistance genes and efflux pump machineries. However, there is an incomplete understanding of the emitted dust particle size distribution (PSD) in terms of its constituent minerals that typically result from the fragmentation of soil aggregates during wind erosion. The emitted dust PSD affects the duration of particle transport and thus each mineral\u2019s global distribution, along with its specific effect upon climate. This lack of understanding is largely due to the scarcity of relevant in situ measurements in dust sources. To advance our understanding of the physicochemical properties of the emitted dust PSD, we present insights into the elemental composition and morphology of individual dust particles collected during the FRontiers in dust minerAloGical coMposition and its Effects upoN climaTe (FRAGMENT) field campaign in the Moroccan Sahara in September 2019. We analyzed more than 300,000 freshly emitted individual particles by performing offline analysis in the laboratory using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDX). Eight major particle-type classes were identified where clay minerals make up the majority of the analyzed particles by number, with carbonates and quartz contributing to a lesser extent. We provide an exhaustive analysis of the size distribution and potential mixing state of different particle types, focusing largely on iron-rich (Fe-oxi/hydroxides) and feldspar particles, which are key to the effects of dust upon radiation and clouds. Nearly pure or externally mixed Fe-oxi/hydroxides are present only in diameters smaller than 2 \u00b5m and mainly below 1 \u00b5m. Fe-oxi/hydroxides tend to be increasingly internally mixed with other minerals, especially clays, as particle size increases, i.e., the volume fraction of Fe-oxi/hydroxides in aggregates decreases with particle size. Pure (externally-mixed) feldspar grains represented 3.7 % of all the particles, of which we estimated about a quarter to be K-feldspar. The externally-mixed total feldspar and K-feldspar abundances are relatively invariant with particle size, in contrast to the increasing abundance of feldspar-like (internally-mixed) aggregates with particle size. We also found that overall the median aspect ratio is rather constant across particle size and mineral groups, although we obtain slightly higher aspect ratios for internally-mixed particles. The system, called Tetracorder, is commanded by an expert system developed by expert spectroscopists. The Tetracorder and the expert system apply multiple algorithms to analyze a spectrum in segments, leveraging the advantages of each spectral region\uffe2\uff80\uff99s sensitivity to detecting different compounds, whether solid, liquid, or gas. The algorithms compare measured spectra to the spectral properties of materials in spectral libraries. The libraries include pure minerals, mineral mixtures that include areal mixtures, intimate mixtures, coatings, and molecular mixtures and other compounds such as organics, vegetation, liquids, and gases. Absorption bands of a particulate surface change shape with grain size, and shape changes are used in some cases to constrain grain size of each component in the surface. The different algorithm results are compared for each spectral region, and specific material composition and average grain size (when possible) are identified. The system is operational analyzing real-time data on a new generation of rovers for future planetary missions, as well as identifying materials using an imaging spectrometer on the International Space Station. Four abundance models are presented, each with increasing sophistication, that are computationally fast on imaging spectrometer data and use Tetracorder identifications to produce maps of mineral abundances. A fifth full radiative model that includes multilayer surfaces is presented but is computationally intensive. We provide, for different aerosol types, reference values of the multiple-scattering parameter, quantifying the artifact introduced by the interaction between the light, the particles, and the filter. The Aethalometer AE33 and the Continuous Light Absorption Photometer (CLAP) were characterized during a laboratory campaign where different soot and mineral dust samples were measured. Furthermore, ambient measurements during a campaign in Granada, Spain, were used to characterize the AE33 and MAAP (Multiangle Absorption Photometer), a pseudo-reference absorption instrument. The laboratory campaign showed significant wavelength dependence of the calibration parameter, the multiple-scattering parameter C. The C of the AE33 at 450 and 808\u2009nm was 4.08 and 3.95 and 6.25 and 5.27 for propane soot and diesel soot, respectively. For the CLAP, the C was 5.10 and 4.26 and 6.79 and 5.80 for propane and diesel soot, respectively. For the different mineral dust samples analyzed in the laboratory, the C at 450\u2009nm ranged between 2.74 and 3.03 for the AE33 and between 2.50 and 2.80 for the CLAP. The ambient measurements at Granada showed an overall C of 4.72 at 450\u2009nm and of 3.90 at 808\u2009nm for the AE33. The results for both the AE33 and the CLAP show a dependence with the particle size, with fine particles having the highest C values and with the C being reduced and leveling off for larger particles. Both the laboratory and the ambient measurements of the AE33 showed overlapping results. The cross-sensitivity to scattering was smaller for the CLAP than for the AE33. The values of the cross-sensitivity parameter ms at 450 and 808\u2009nm were 3.0\u2009% and 1.5\u2009% for the AE33 and 2.4\u2009% and 0.9\u2009% for the CLAP. This study assesses the effectiveness of eight novel oxidation treatments, including persulfate (PS), ferrous sulfate, sulfidated nano-zero valent iron (S-nZVI), and potassium ferrate, along with their combinations, for the potential in situ remediation of GW polluted with chlorinated solvents (1,2-dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene). Our bench-scale results reveal that the combined addition of PS and S-nZVI can effectively eliminate trichloroethylene (10 \u00b5g/L), achieving removal rates of up to 80% and 92% within 1 h, respectively, when using synthetic GW. In the case of real GW, this combination achieved removal rates of 69, 99, and 92% for cis-1,2-dichloroethylene, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene, respectively, within 24 h. Therefore, this proposed remediation solution resulted in a significant reduction in the environmental risk quotient, shifting it from a high-risk (1.1) to a low-risk (0.2) scenario. Characterizing physico-chemical properties of dust-emitting sediments in arid regions is fundamental to understand the effect of dust on climate and ecosystems. For high-latitude dust (HLD), this knowledge is scarce. This study focuses on the particle size distribution (PSD), mineralogy, cohesion, iron (Fe) mode of occurrence and Visible Near Infra-Red (VNIR) reflectance spectra of dust-emitting sediments from dust-hotspots in Iceland (HLD region). Extensive analysis was conducted on top sediments collected from seven dust-sources and an intensive at Jokuls\u00e1 basin including top sediments, sediments and aeolian ripples. Fully and minimally dispersed PSDs evidenced remarkable similarities with an average median diameter of 56\u00b169 and 55\u00b162 \u00b5m. Mineralogical analyses showed the prevalence of amorphous phases (68\u00b126 %), feldspars (17\u00b113 %), and pyroxenes (9.3\u00b17.2 %), aligned with the reflectance spectra. Fe content reached 9.5\u00b10.40 wt %, mainly in silicate structures (80\u00b16.3 %), complemented by magnetite (16\u00b15.5 %), hematite/goethite (4.5\u00b12.7 %), and readily exchangeable Fe-ions or Fe nano-oxides (1.6\u00b10.63 %). Icelandic top sediments have coarser PSD compared to the high dust-emitting crusts from mid-latitude arid regions, distinctive mineralogy, and threefold bulk Fe content, with a large presence of magnetite. During the Jordan Wind erosion And Dust Investigation (J-WADI) experiment, we tested one OPC-N3 against two traditional reference OPCs, the Promo and Fidas, from Palas GmbH. The N3 and Promo OPCs were located in close proximity to a sonic anemometer, enabling the correlation of dust concentration and vertical velocity fluctuations for estimating dust fluxes. Despite the high-temperature and dusty wind conditions of the campaign, the N3 monitored the dynamics and magnitude of dust concentration with reasonable precision. The turbulence characteristics of the dust concentration fluctuations measured by the N3, including variance, skewness, kurtosis, and energy spectrum, were similar to those from the Promo. However, the N3 flow rate exhibited variations under these outdoor conditions that affected the concentration of fine dust particles, and certain particles around 1\u2009\u00b5m appeared to be misclassified in the upper size bin. After correcting the N3 dust concentration to address these discrepancies and after calibrating it against a reference OPC, the N3 accurately estimated the dust emission flux, with differences of less than 30\u2009% compared to the reference OPC. Our results confirm the potential of low-cost OPCs for dust erosion research. The emitted dust PSD affects the duration of particle transport and thus each mineral\u2019s global distribution, along with its specific effect upon climate. This lack of understanding is largely due to the scarcity of relevant in situ measurements in dust sources. To advance our understanding of the physicochemical properties of the emitted dust PSD, we present insights into the elemental composition and morphology of individual dust particles collected during the FRontiers in dust minerAloGical coMposition and its Effects upoN climaTe (FRAGMENT) field campaign in the Moroccan Sahara in September 2019. We analyzed more than 300,000 freshly emitted individual particles by performing offline analysis in the laboratory using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) coupled with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDX). Eight major particle-type classes were identified where clay minerals make up the majority of the analyzed particles by number, with carbonates and quartz contributing to a lesser extent. We provide an exhaustive analysis of the size distribution and potential mixing state of different particle types, focusing largely on iron-rich (Fe-oxi/hydroxides) and feldspar particles, which are key to the effects of dust upon radiation and clouds. Nearly pure or externally mixed Fe-oxi/hydroxides are present only in diameters smaller than 2 \u00b5m and mainly below 1 \u00b5m. Fe-oxi/hydroxides tend to be increasingly internally mixed with other minerals, especially clays, as particle size increases, i.e., the volume fraction of Fe-oxi/hydroxides in aggregates decreases with particle size. Pure (externally-mixed) feldspar grains represented 3.7 % of all the particles, of which we estimated about a quarter to be K-feldspar. The externally-mixed total feldspar and K-feldspar abundances are relatively invariant with particle size, in contrast to the increasing abundance of feldspar-like (internally-mixed) aggregates with particle size. We also found that overall the median aspect ratio is rather constant across particle size and mineral groups, although we obtain slightly higher aspect ratios for internally-mixed particles.
