Reported products and mechanisms for the reaction have varied, most likely because of green rust\uffe2\uff80\uff99s layered structure, as reduction at outer and interlayer surfaces might produce different reaction products with variable stabilities. Based on studies of Cr(III) oxidation by biogenic Mn (IV) oxides, Cr mobility in oxic soils is controlled by the solubility of the Cr(III)-bearing phase. Therefore, careful engineering of green rust properties, i.e., crystal/particle size, morphology, structure, and electron availability, is essential for its optimization as a remediation reagent. In the present study, pure green rust sulfate and green rust sulfate with Al, Mg and Zn substitutions were synthesized and reacted with identical chromate (CrO42\uffe2\uff88\uff92) solutions. The reaction products were characterized by X-ray diffraction, pair distribution function analysis, X-ray absorption spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy and treated with synthetic \uffce\uffb4-MnO2 to assess how easily Cr(III) in the products could be oxidized. It was found that Mg substitution had the most beneficial effect on Cr lability in the product. Less than 2.5% of the Cr(III) present in the reacted Mg-GR was reoxidized by \uffce\uffb4-MnO2 within 14\uffc2\uffa0days, and the particle structure and Cr speciation observed during X-ray scattering and absorption analyses of this product suggested that Cr(VI) was reduced in its interlayer. Reduction in the interlayer lead to the linkage of newly-formed Cr(III) to hydroxyl groups in the adjacent octahedral layers, which resulted in increased structural coherency between these layers, distinctive rim domains, sequestration of Cr(III) in insoluble Fe oxide bonding environments resistant to reoxidation and partial transformation to Cr(III)-substituted feroxyhyte. Hydrological services, e.g. water supply, hydrological regulation and erosion mitigation, are particularly important to sustain the life of more than fifty million Andean people. While rapid and important forest cover changes have occurred during recent decades, critical information on the impact of forestation on hydrological services has not yet been synthesized in the context of Andean ecosystems. We define forestation as the establishment of forest by plantation or natural regeneration on areas that either had forest in the past or not. To help improve decision-making on forestation in the Andes, we reviewed the available literature concerning the impacts of forestation on water supply, hydrological regulation and mitigation of erosion and landslides. We also examined available data on the most relevant hydrological processes such as infiltration, evapotranspiration and runoff in forest stands. Hydrological services from native forests were also included as a reference state for comparing processes and services provided by forestation. Following systematic review protocols, we synthesized 155 studies using different methods, including meta-analyses and meta-regressions. Results show that forestation has had clear impacts on degraded soils, through reducing water erosion of soils and risk of moderate floods, increasing soil infiltration rate by 8 and topsoil organic matter (SOM). We found that 20\u202fyears of tree plantation was sufficient to recover infiltration rate and sediment yield close to the levels of native forests whereas SOM, soil water storage and surface runoff of native forests could not be recovered by forestation in the time scales examined. The benefits in terms of hydrological regulation are at the expense of a reduction in total water supply since forest cover was associated with higher water use in most Andean regions. Forestation with native species was underrepresented in the reviewed studies. The impact of forestation on landslides has also been largely overlooked in the Andes. At high elevations, exotic tree plantations on Andean grasslands (e.g. paramo and puna) had the most detrimental consequences since these grasslands showed an excellent capacity for hydrological regulation and erosion mitigation but also a water yield up to 40% higher than tree plantations. We performed long-term batch experiments by exposing synthetic GR sulfate (GRso(4)) to As-free and As-spiked (6 mg L-1) natural groundwater at both 25 and 4 C. At 25 C, GRso4 was metastable in As-free groundwater and transformed to GlIcos, and then fully to magnetite within 120 days; however, GRso(4) stability increased 7-fold by lowering the temperature to 4 degrees C, and 8-fold by adding As to the groundwater at 25 degrees C. Highest GRso4 stability was observed when As was added to the groundwater at 4 C. This stabilizing effect is explained by GR solubility being lowered by adsorbed As and/or lower temperatures, inhibiting partial GR dissolution required for transformation to GlIcos, and ultimately to magnetite. Despite these mineral transformations, all added As was removed from As-spiked samples within 120 days at 25 C, while uptake was 2 times slower at 4 degrees C. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4\uffc2\uffa0m using the eddy\uffe2\uff80\uff90covariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non\uffe2\uff80\uff90uniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well\uffe2\uff80\uff90mixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. We directly measured fluxes four times between October 2016 and July 2017 using drifting chambers. Median fluxes are 1.4 and 2.1\uffe2\uff80\uff89mmol\uffe2\uff80\uff89m\uffe2\uff88\uff922 h\uffe2\uff88\uff921 at midday and midnight, respectively, with night fluxes exceeding those during the day by 39%. We attribute diel carbon dioxide flux variability mainly to changes in the water partial pressure of carbon dioxide. However, no consistent drivers could be identified across sites. These climatic grids do not reflect conditions below vegetation canopies and near the ground surface, where critical ecosystem functions occur and most terrestrial species reside. Here, we provide global maps of soil temperature and bioclimatic variables at a 1\uffe2\uff80\uff90km2resolution for 0\uffe2\uff80\uff935 and 5\uffe2\uff80\uff9315\uffc2\uffa0cm soil depth. These maps were created by calculating the difference (i.e. offset) between in situ soil temperature measurements, based on time series from over 1200 1\uffe2\uff80\uff90km2pixels (summarized from 8519 unique temperature sensors) across all the world's major terrestrial biomes, and coarse\uffe2\uff80\uff90grained air temperature estimates from ERA5\uffe2\uff80\uff90Land (an atmospheric reanalysis by the European Centre for Medium\uffe2\uff80\uff90Range Weather Forecasts). We show that mean annual soil temperature differs markedly from the corresponding gridded air temperature, by up to 10\uffc2\uffb0C (mean\uffc2\uffa0=\uffc2\uffa03.0\uffc2\uffa0\uffc2\uffb1\uffc2\uffa02.1\uffc2\uffb0C), with substantial variation across biomes and seasons. Over the year, soils in cold and/or dry biomes are substantially warmer (+3.6\uffc2\uffa0\uffc2\uffb1\uffc2\uffa02.3\uffc2\uffb0C) than gridded air temperature, whereas soils in warm and humid environments are on average slightly cooler (\uffe2\uff88\uff920.7\uffc2\uffa0\uffc2\uffb1\uffc2\uffa02.3\uffc2\uffb0C). The observed substantial and biome\uffe2\uff80\uff90specific offsets emphasize that the projected impacts of climate and climate change on near\uffe2\uff80\uff90surface biodiversity and ecosystem functioning are inaccurately assessed when air rather than soil temperature is used, especially in cold environments. The global soil\uffe2\uff80\uff90related bioclimatic variables provided here are an important step forward for any application in ecology and related disciplines. Here, we investigate the existence of this layer during erosion events recorded in Iceland and Jordan. Size\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolved dust fluxes were estimated at three levels between 2 and 4\uffc2\uffa0m using the eddy\uffe2\uff80\uff90covariance method. Dust fluxes were found mainly constant only between the two upper levels in Iceland, the lower dust flux being often stronger and richer in coarse particles, while dust fluxes in Jordan were nearly constant across all levels. The wind dynamics could not explain the absence of a constant dust flux layer in Iceland. We show that the presence of stationary dust source patches in Iceland, related to surface humidity, created a non\uffe2\uff80\uff90uniform dust layer near the surface, named dust roughness sublayer (DRSL), where individual plumes behind each patch interact but do not fully mix. The lowest dust measurement level was probably located within this sublayer while the upper ones were located above, such that there the emitted dust became spatially well\uffe2\uff80\uff90mixed. This explains near the surface in Iceland, the more intermittent dust concentration, its low correlation with the dust concentrations above, and the richer dust flux in coarse particles due to their lower deposition contribution. Here we present a large-scale assessment of day- and night-time carbon dioxide fluxes at the water-air interface across 34 European streams. We directly measured fluxes four times between October 2016 and July 2017 using drifting chambers. Median fluxes are 1.4 and 2.1\uffe2\uff80\uff89mmol\uffe2\uff80\uff89m\uffe2\uff88\uff922 h\uffe2\uff88\uff921 at midday and midnight, respectively, with night fluxes exceeding those during the day by 39%. We attribute diel carbon dioxide flux variability mainly to changes in the water partial pressure of carbon dioxide. However, no consistent drivers could be identified across sites. Since the completion of the first phase of HYDROBOD (2011), further parts of Lower Austria have been surveyed by agricultural soil mapping. These new foundations have now been incorporated into the existing database, resulting in a significant improvement in data quality in the newly mapped areas. Die SWR ist eine entscheidende Eingangsgr\u00f6\u00dfe bei Wasserhaushaltsberechnungen oder der hydrogeologischen Grundwassermodellierung. Ebenso steuert sie ma\u00dfgeblich die Verlagerung von Schad- und N\u00e4hrstoffen (bspw. Nitrat) im Boden und beeinflusst indirekt die Standorteignung f\u00fcr Flora und Fauna. Mit der pNAG wird das Risiko einer Nitratauswaschung aus dem Wurzelraum der Vegetation durch versickerndes Bodenwasser bewertet. Der Ort der Beurteilung ist hierbei die Untergrenze der durchwurzelten Bodenschicht. Der Quotient aus SWR und nutzbarer Feldkapazit\u00e4t im effektiven Wurzelraum (nFKWe) liefert zun\u00e4chst die Austauschh\u00e4ufigkeit des pflanzenverf\u00fcgbaren Bodenwassers. Diese wird in 5 Stufen klassifiziert (sehr gering (1), gering (2), mittel (3), hoch (4), sehr hoch (5)) und ergibt die pNAG. Der Kennwert der pNAG ist zur Ableitung quantitativer Aussagen nicht geeignet, da nutzungsabh\u00e4ngige Einflussgr\u00f6\u00dfen (u.a. Kulturart, zu- und abgef\u00fchrte Stickstoffmengen, herbstliche Nitratgehalte im Boden) nicht ber\u00fccksichtigt werden. Mit der pNAG wird das Risiko einer Nitratauswaschung aus dem Wurzelraum der Vegetation durch versickerndes Bodenwasser bewertet. Der Ort der Beurteilung ist hierbei die Untergrenze der durchwurzelten Bodenschicht. Der Quotient aus SWR und nutzbarer Feldkapazit\u00e4t im effektiven Wurzelraum (nFKWe) liefert zun\u00e4chst die Austauschh\u00e4ufigkeit des pflanzenverf\u00fcgbaren Bodenwassers. Diese wird in 5 Stufen klassifiziert (sehr gering (1), gering (2), mittel (3), hoch (4), sehr hoch (5)) und ergibt die pNAG. Der Kennwert der pNAG ist zur Ableitung quantitativer Aussagen nicht geeignet, da nutzungsabh\u00e4ngige Einflussgr\u00f6\u00dfen (u.a. Dazu wurden f\u00fcr gleiche Horizont-Substrat-Kombinationen (HSK) die Kennwerte Bodenart, Humus-und Carbonatgehalt, Skelettanteil, Trockenrohdichte, Wassergehalt bei Feldkapazit\u00e4t und effektive Durchwurzelungstiefe statistisch abgeleitet (i.d.R. Medianwerte). Dar\u00fcber hinaus wurden die folgenden Eingangsdaten ber\u00fccksichtigt: Oberkante Gr-Horizonte, bodenkundliche Feuchtestufe, klimatische Wasserbilanz. Zur Absch\u00e4tzung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit (Sm) in 35 cm Bezugstiefe wurde die Auswertungsmethode 1.1 der Methodendokumentation Bodenkunde (AG Boden, 2010) herangezogen. Diese klassifiziert das Erstverdichtungsverhalten (im Sinne einer Verdichtungsintensit\u00e4t) eines nat\u00fcrlich gelagerten, abgesetzten Unterbodens auf Grund seiner physikalischen und hydrologischen Eigenschaften und ist sowohl f\u00fcr land-, als auch forstwirtschaftlich genutzte B\u00f6den anwendbar. Die Basis der qualitativen Bewertung bildet die Grundeinstufung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit je HSK entsprechend der Bodenart. Um den aktuellen Zustand der Moorb\u00f6den zu erfassen, wurden im Jahr 2013 fl\u00e4chenrepr\u00e4sentativ und randomisiert an 7.725 Standorten mit ausreichender Datenbasis erneut bodenkundliche Erhebungen durchgef\u00fchrt und statistisch ausgewertet. Im Ergebnis konnten M\u00e4chtigkeitsverlustraten f\u00fcr landwirtschaftlich genutzte Moorstandorte in Brandenburg abgeleitet werden. Eine erneute Aktualisierung der Moorbodenkarte erfolgte auf Grundlage der bestehenden Fl\u00e4chenkulisse der Moorbodenkarte Brandenburg (2013). F\u00fcr jede Teilfl\u00e4che dieser Datengrundlage wurde \u00fcber eine r\u00e4umliche Abfrage der Bezug zu den zwischenzeitlich \u00fcberarbeiteten und neu bewerteten fachlichen Datengrundlagen aus dem Moorarchiv der Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t zu Berlin (HUM), der Bodensch\u00e4tzung (BS), der Forstlichen Standortskartierung (FSK), der Preu\u00dfisch geol.-agronomischen Karten (GK) und der Biotoptypen und Landnutzungskartierung (BTLNK) hergestellt und der potentielle Zustand f\u00fcr 2021 abgeleitet. Die vorliegenden Vektordatens\u00e4tze wurden aus einem Grid im 10 m-Raster erzeugt. Er basiert auf den Legendeneinheiten (LE) der Boden\u00fcbersichtskarte (B\u00dcK300) mit entsprechender Zuordnung von parametrisierten Fl\u00e4chenbodenformen. Die einzelnen Fl\u00e4chenbodenformen (FBF) wurden mit bodenphysikalischen Kennwerten belegt, die durch Gel\u00e4nde-und Laboruntersuchungen bestimmt wurden. Dazu wurden f\u00fcr gleiche Horizont-Substrat-Kombinationen (HSK) die Kennwerte Bodenart, Humus-und Carbonatgehalt, Skelettanteil, Trockenrohdichte, Wassergehalt bei Feldkapazit\u00e4t und effektive Durchwurzelungstiefe statistisch abgeleitet (i.d.R. Medianwerte). Dar\u00fcber hinaus wurden die folgenden Eingangsdaten ber\u00fccksichtigt: Oberkante Gr-Horizonte, bodenkundliche Feuchtestufe, klimatische Wasserbilanz. Zur Absch\u00e4tzung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit (Sm) in 35 cm Bezugstiefe wurde die Auswertungsmethode 1.1 der Methodendokumentation Bodenkunde (AG Boden, 2010) herangezogen. Diese klassifiziert das Erstverdichtungsverhalten (im Sinne einer Verdichtungsintensit\u00e4t) eines nat\u00fcrlich gelagerten, abgesetzten Unterbodens auf Grund seiner physikalischen und hydrologischen Eigenschaften und ist sowohl f\u00fcr land-, als auch forstwirtschaftlich genutzte B\u00f6den anwendbar. Die Basis der qualitativen Bewertung bildet die Grundeinstufung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit je HSK entsprechend der Bodenart. Um den aktuellen Zustand der Moorb\u00f6den zu erfassen, wurden im Jahr 2013 fl\u00e4chenrepr\u00e4sentativ und randomisiert an 7.725 Standorten mit ausreichender Datenbasis erneut bodenkundliche Erhebungen durchgef\u00fchrt und statistisch ausgewertet. Im Ergebnis konnten M\u00e4chtigkeitsverlustraten f\u00fcr landwirtschaftlich genutzte Moorstandorte in Brandenburg abgeleitet werden. Eine erneute Aktualisierung der Moorbodenkarte erfolgte auf Grundlage der bestehenden Fl\u00e4chenkulisse der Moorbodenkarte Brandenburg (2013). F\u00fcr jede Teilfl\u00e4che dieser Datengrundlage wurde \u00fcber eine r\u00e4umliche Abfrage der Bezug zu den zwischenzeitlich \u00fcberarbeiteten und neu bewerteten fachlichen Datengrundlagen aus dem Moorarchiv der Humboldt-Universit\u00e4t zu Berlin (HUM), der Bodensch\u00e4tzung (BS), der Forstlichen Standortskartierung (FSK), der Preu\u00dfisch geol.-agronomischen Karten (GK) und der Biotoptypen und Landnutzungskartierung (BTLNK) hergestellt und der potentielle Zustand f\u00fcr 2021 abgeleitet. Die vorliegenden Vektordatens\u00e4tze wurden aus einem Grid im 10 m-Raster erzeugt. Er basiert auf den Legendeneinheiten (LE) der Boden\u00fcbersichtskarte (B\u00dcK300) mit entsprechender Zuordnung von parametrisierten Fl\u00e4chenbodenformen. Die einzelnen Fl\u00e4chenbodenformen (FBF) wurden mit bodenphysikalischen Kennwerten belegt, die durch Gel\u00e4nde-und Laboruntersuchungen bestimmt wurden. Dazu wurden f\u00fcr gleiche Horizont-Substrat-Kombinationen (HSK) die Kennwerte Bodenart, Humus-und Carbonatgehalt, Skelettanteil, Trockenrohdichte, Wassergehalt bei Feldkapazit\u00e4t und effektive Durchwurzelungstiefe statistisch abgeleitet (i.d.R. Medianwerte). Dar\u00fcber hinaus wurden die folgenden Eingangsdaten ber\u00fccksichtigt: Oberkante Gr-Horizonte, bodenkundliche Feuchtestufe, klimatische Wasserbilanz. Zur Absch\u00e4tzung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit (Sm) in 35 cm Bezugstiefe wurde die Auswertungsmethode 1.1 der Methodendokumentation Bodenkunde (AG Boden, 2010) herangezogen. Diese klassifiziert das Erstverdichtungsverhalten (im Sinne einer Verdichtungsintensit\u00e4t) eines nat\u00fcrlich gelagerten, abgesetzten Unterbodens auf Grund seiner physikalischen und hydrologischen Eigenschaften und ist sowohl f\u00fcr land-, als auch forstwirtschaftlich genutzte B\u00f6den anwendbar. Die Basis der qualitativen Bewertung bildet die Grundeinstufung der potenziellen Verdichtungsempfindlichkeit je HSK entsprechend der Bodenart.
