The investigation of the Danish experiment concerned two crop rotations (continuous winter wheat cropping, ‘FR 1’; winter oilseed rape–winter wheat–winter wheat–winter barley, ‘FR 2’), three intensities of soil tillage (ploughing, ‘P’; tine tillage ‘H8–10’; direct drilling, ‘D’) and three target control levels against Apera spica-venti (untreated, ‘AU’; 70% control, ‘A 70%’; and 90% control, ‘A 90%’), whilst the German experiment comprised one arable crop rotation (winter oilseed rape–winter wheat–winter rye–peas–winter wheat–winter barley, ‘DR 1’) and one fodder crop rotation (winter oilseed rape–winter barley–alfalfa/clover/grass-mixture–winter rye–silage maize–winter wheat, ‘DR 2’) each crop with situation-related pesticide use (100% HF) or application rates reduced by 50% (50% HF). At both sites, rotations and treatments were located on the same plots in each year. The study comprises the harvest years 2003–2006. Humus requirement could be covered in all crop rotations, while humus replacement rate was highest in ‘FR 1’. Total yield potential of the crop rotations was expressed by grain equivalent (GE) yields and energy output. The different crop rotations influenced yield potential to a larger extent than pesticide use intensity or tillage. The average GE yields and energy outputs of ‘FR 1’ (83.5 GE ha−1; 121.7 GJ ha−1) were significantly higher compared with ‘FR 2’ (64.2 GE ha−1; 93.2 GJ ha−1); ‘DR 2’ (72.9 GE ha−1; 192.3 GJ ha−1) exceeded ‘DR 1’ (70.0 GE ha−1; 100.3 GJ ha−1). Higher N surpluses were found for the Danish crop rotations than for the German experiment, probably due to the relatively low N use efficiency of pig slurry, which was applied to each crop in ‘FR 1’ and ‘FR 2’. Averaged across all treatments, N surplus for ‘FR 1’, ‘FR 2’, ‘DR 1’, and ‘DR 2’ were 72.9, 94.4, 32.0, and 38.2 kg N ha−1, respectively. Similar to yield, energy efficiency at both sites was noteworthy affected by crop rotation and minor by pesticide use intensity or tillage. The risk potential due to pesticide application was low in all treatments.
Pesticide", "2. However, its development is still hampered in Mediterranean regions because of fears of severe competition for water. Recent studies have shown that soil resources other than water may also be restrictive, and particularly nitrogen. Over a three-year period, the effect of introducing a cover crop was studied with respect to the temporal and spatial changes to nitrogen dynamics in a Mediterranean vineyard. The experiment compared the impact of three different types of soil cover management on nitrogen dynamics, and particularly on soil nitrogen mineralization which is the principal source of inorganic nitrogen in situations with no application of N fertilizers which are frequent in viticulture. This experiment provided evidence that the presence of an intercrop significantly reduced nitrogen accumulation in aerial parts of grapevine during the year due to competition for soil resources. This reduction varied markedly between years and treatments, and was more pronounced during dry years. The competition for nitrogen was direct as intercrop deprived grapevine of soil nitrogen beneath the inter-row and caused grapevine uptake to be higher beneath the row. In deep soils, a grapevine can adapt its root system in order to access deeper water resources, but it then partially abandons the mineralization zone containing most inorganic nitrogen. Competition for nitrogen was less marked with a temporary cover crop than with a permanent one, because of the shorter period of uptake with the former and the time needed for an annual cover crop to develop its root system each year. Intercrop also competed indirectly for nitrogen with grapevine as it took up soil water and made inorganic nitrogen less mobile and accessible to grapevine. Intercrop markedly decreased soil nitrogen mineralization. Although it did not significantly affect organic matter characteristics or soil temperature, it clearly modified the water regime. Indeed, under either temporary or perennial cover crops, the upper soil layers dried more rapidly than when there was only evaporation from bare soil. Consequently, nitrogen mineralization decreased faster with intercropped treatments and halted prematurely during the summer. The earliness of the reduction in nitrogen accumulation in intercropped vineyards also suggested that a lower level of nitrogen transfer to perennial reserves was involved. Indeed, grass cover grows and competes for nitrogen during the autumn which is a favourable period for nitrogen accumulation in wood reserves. Although better water infiltration was observed in the presence of a cover crop (notably in the autumn), the favourable conditions for nitrogen mineralization were propitious for grass cover growth and uptake. Consequently, intercrop reduced grapevine growth of the year but also the potential growth for the next year by decreasing grapevine nitrogen perennial reserves
[SDV.SA]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences", "P33 - Chimie et physique du sol", "2. After sixteen years of comparison, the agronomic performance and environmental sustainability of the three agro-ecosystems were assessed. Crops grain yield, total C inputs and N budget at field level were evaluated. N use efficiency (NUE) at micro-agroecosystem level was determined. Soil samples were collected from the three agroecosystems in order to quantify soil C and N pools. Results showed comparable grain yields in the three agro-ecosystems. The conventional system showed a larger N surplus and a lower crop N use efficiency in comparison with the organic ones. Moreover, the organic systems presented a lower potential risk of N losses with respect to the conventional one. The Young Organic agro-ecosystem was the most effective in terms of long term soil C (13% higher than conventional) and the oldest organic agro-ecosystem was the most effective in terms of soil N storage (9% higher than conventional). The results obtained demonstrated that the application of the organic farming method could increase the environmental sustainability in stockless arable systems under Mediterranean type of climate.
0106 biological sciences", "2. Therefore, this vegetable long-term fertilization experiment can be used to investigate different plant-soil-systems under the same climatic conditions. The experimented was halted in 2022. The experimental site (52°21’01.30’’ N, 13°19’05.47’’ E, 50 m a.s.l.) is located in the transition zone between the more maritime-affected Northern German Plain and the continental climate of the European mainland. Weather data were collected in an agrometeorological station close to the experimental area. The long-term means (1991-2020) for air temperature and annual precipitation are 9.7 °C and 492 mm. The single plots are quadratic concrete boxes with walls of 10 cm thickness, a surface area of 4 m2 and a depth of 75 cm. The upper 50 cm are filled with the tested soils; the lower 25 cm comprises a coarse-sandy drainage layer. The three soil types are Arenic Luvisol (weak loamy sand), Gleyic Fluvisol (heavy sandy loam) and Luvic-Phaeozem (medium clayey silt) according to the World Reference Base – WRB (and the Bodenkundliche Kartieranleitung – KA4). Within 10 rotations, the vegetable species white cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. alba), carrot (Daucus carota L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), leek (Allium porrum L.) and celery (Apium graveolens L. var. rapaceum Mill.) were cultivated. No celery was cultivated during the first rotation. The experiment consists of 12 fertilization treatments in different combinations of mineral N fertilization and organic amendments and as quadruplicate for each of the three soils. The experimental set-up scheme can be found in the supplementary material. Mineral N fertilizer was applied as calcium ammonium nitrate. Mineral P and K fertilization was uniform for all treatments. Total N and total C in soil, plant and organic amendments were determined using a CNS analyser VARIO El (Elemental Hanau) since 1995 and before by wet combustion with K2Cr2O7 und H2SO4. C and N in the soil samples and N in the plant samples were analysed annually. The C contents of the crop residues (leaf + stalk + root) of the five vegetable species were investigated irregularly. In autumn, the soil was annually dug up to 20 cm by using a spade. Weeds were removed by a combination of mechanical (cultivator, rake or hoe) and chemical measures. Insect protection nets, insecticides or fungicides were used where necessary. Approximately 150 mm per year was additionally irrigated with a sprinkler system. More details about the experiment’s description can be found in the supplementary material.
