These FACE experiments have demonstrated increases in net primary production and carbon (C) storage in forest vegetation due to increased atmospheric CO2 concentrations. However, the fate of this extra biomass in the forest floor or mineral soil is less clear. After 6 years of FACE treatment in a short-rotation poplar plantation, we observed an additional sink of 32 g C m−2 y−1 in the forest floor. Mineral soil C content increased equally under ambient and increased CO2 treatment during the 6-year experiment. However, during the first half of the experiment the increase in soil C was suppressed under FACE due to a priming effect, that is, the additional labile C increased the mineralization of older SOM, whereas during the second half of the experiment the increase in soil C was larger under FACE. An additional sink of 54 g C m−2 y−1 in the top 10 cm of the mineral soil was created under FACE during the second half of the experiment. Although, this FACE effect was not significant due to a combination of soil spatial variability and the low number of replicates that are inherent to the present generation of forest stand FACE experiments. Physical fractionation by wet sieving revealed an increase in the C and nitrogen (N) content of macro-aggregates due to FACE. Further fractionation by density showed that FACE increased C and N contents of the light iPOM and mineral associated intra-macro-aggregate fractions. Isolation of micro-aggregates from macro-aggregates and subsequent fractionation by density revealed that FACE increased C and N contents of the light iPOM, C content of the fine iPOM and C and N contents of the mineral associated intra-micro-aggregate fractions. From this we infer that the amount of stabilized C and N increased under FACE treatment. We compared our data with published results of other forest FACE experiments and infer that the type of vegetation and soil base saturation, as a proxy for bioturbation, are important factors related to the size of the additional C sinks of the forest floor–soil system under FACE.
tropospheric o-3", "elevated co2", "n-fertilization", "Ecology", "mineral soil", "terrestrial ecosystems", "deciduous forest", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "carbon storage", "cultivated soils", "15. Through increases in net primary production (NPP), elevated CO2 is hypothesized to increase the amount of plant litter entering the soil. The fate of this extra carbon on the forest floor or in mineral soil is currently not clear. Moreover, increased rates of NPP can be maintained only if forests can escape nitrogen limitation. In a Free atmospheric CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiment near Bangor, Wales, 4 ambient and 4 elevated [CO2] plots were planted with patches of Betula pendula, Alnus glutinosa and Fagus sylvatica on a former arable field. After 4 years, biomass averaged for the 3 species was 5497 (se 270) g m￢ﾈﾒ2 in ambient and 6450 (se 130) g m￢ﾈﾒ2 in elevated [CO2] plots, a significant increase of 17% (P = 0.018). During that time, only a shallow L forest floor litter layer had formed due to intensive bioturbation. Total soil C and N contents increased irrespective of treatment and species as a result of afforestation. We could not detect an additional C sink in the soil, nor were soil C stabilization processes affected by elevated [CO2]. We observed a decrease of leaf N content in Betula and Alnus under elevated [CO2], while the soil C/N ratio decreased regardless of CO2 treatment. The ratio of N taken up from the soil and by N2-fixation in Alnus was not affected by elevated [CO2]. We infer that increased nitrogen use efficiency is the mechanism by which increased NPP is sustained under elevated [CO2] at this site.

rotation poplar plantation", "0106 biological sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "elevated co2", "QE1-996.5", "Ecology", "dinitrogen fixation", "mineral soil", "natural n-15 abundance", "face", "Geology", "alnus-glutinosa", "15. Therefore, this vegetable long-term fertilization experiment can be used to investigate different plant-soil-systems under the same climatic conditions. The experimented was halted in 2022. The experimental site (52°21’01.30’’ N, 13°19’05.47’’ E, 50 m a.s.l.) is located in the transition zone between the more maritime-affected Northern German Plain and the continental climate of the European mainland. Weather data were collected in an agrometeorological station close to the experimental area. The long-term means (1991-2020) for air temperature and annual precipitation are 9.7 °C and 492 mm. The single plots are quadratic concrete boxes with walls of 10 cm thickness, a surface area of 4 m2 and a depth of 75 cm. The upper 50 cm are filled with the tested soils; the lower 25 cm comprises a coarse-sandy drainage layer. The three soil types are Arenic Luvisol (weak loamy sand), Gleyic Fluvisol (heavy sandy loam) and Luvic-Phaeozem (medium clayey silt) according to the World Reference Base – WRB (and the Bodenkundliche Kartieranleitung – KA4). Within 10 rotations, the vegetable species white cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. alba), carrot (Daucus carota L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), leek (Allium porrum L.) and celery (Apium graveolens L. var. rapaceum Mill.) were cultivated. No celery was cultivated during the first rotation. The experiment consists of 12 fertilization treatments in different combinations of mineral N fertilization and organic amendments and as quadruplicate for each of the three soils. The experimental set-up scheme can be found in the supplementary material. Mineral N fertilizer was applied as calcium ammonium nitrate. Mineral P and K fertilization was uniform for all treatments. Total N and total C in soil, plant and organic amendments were determined using a CNS analyser VARIO El (Elemental Hanau) since 1995 and before by wet combustion with K2Cr2O7 und H2SO4. C and N in the soil samples and N in the plant samples were analysed annually. The C contents of the crop residues (leaf + stalk + root) of the five vegetable species were investigated irregularly. In autumn, the soil was annually dug up to 20 cm by using a spade. Weeds were removed by a combination of mechanical (cultivator, rake or hoe) and chemical measures. Insect protection nets, insecticides or fungicides were used where necessary. Approximately 150 mm per year was additionally irrigated with a sprinkler system. More details about the experiment’s description can be found in the supplementary material. To achieve a holistic understanding of responses to land management or climate change it is important, to jointly evaluate complex feedbacks among different variables across spatio-temporal scales, requiring different scientific disciplines – e.g., biogeochemistry, hydrology, socioeconomics - to work in concert. To do so, the holistic, automated experimental sensor platform AgroFlux aims to serve as multidisciplinary hub that integrate process-based knowledge over a wide range of spatio-temporal scales. In its current stage the AgroFlux experimental sensor platform features: 1) an automatized gantry crane robotic system to detect crop phenology (e.g., proximal sensing of spectral plant indices (NDVI, RVI) and IR canopy temperatures), GHG and ET flux dynamics (FT-NSS closed canopy chambers); 2) UAV based remote sensing for upscaling purposes; 3) flexible, adaptive measurement infrastructure (e.g., IoT sensor network, canopy chambers, proximal sensors for NDVI, RVI; IR canopy temperatures); 4) in-situ stable isotope (C, N and water) monitoring along soil-plant atmosphere gradients (flux separation); and 5) experiment based determination of processes within soil-plant atmosphere interphase (e.g., plant-soil feedbacks).
