Tree functional group and nutrient inputs both have a significant influence on wood decomposition rates. However, little is known about how these factors interactively influence soil biogeochemistry through wood decomposition. Methods: We examined the effects of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) addition on wood decomposition of different angiosperm and gymnosperm tree species in a three-year period in a subtropical forest. We explored the outcomes for the underlying soil nutrients, microbial biomass, and saprotrophic fungal communities. Result: We found that P addition, rather than N, significantly increased total C, P, as well as microbial biomass C and P concentrations in the soil beneath deadwood. These effects were particularly pronounced in the soil beneath angiosperm wood compared to gymnosperm wood, likely related to the higher decomposition rates of angiosperm wood and its sensitivity to P. Similarly, the presence and abundance of soil saprotrophic fungal communities was strongly associated with P addition, where specific fungal responses were more pronounced under angiosperm wood than gymnosperm wood. Conclusion: Our study underscores the pivotal role of tree functional group in modulating the response of soil nutrient dynamics and fungal community structure beneath decomposing wood in a subtropical forest. These insights are critical for developing predictive models of soil nutrient cycles, which can help manage forest ecosystems more effectively in the face of global environmental changes.
[SDV.SA]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences", "Soil nutrient concentrations", "Carbon cycling", "570", "[SDV.SA] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Agricultural sciences", "Saprotrophic fungi", "Wood decomposition", "Tree functional group", "630", "Nutrient addition experiment
https://doi.org/10.1007/s11104-024-06959-2
Abstract
Phosphorus (P) is an essential macro￢ﾀﾐnutrient required for plant metabolism and growth. Low P availability could potentially limit plant responses to elevated carbon dioxide (eCO2), but consensus has yet to be reached on the extent of this limitation. Here, based on data from experiments that manipulated both CO2 and P for young individuals of woody and non￢ﾀﾐwoody species, we present a meta￢ﾀﾐanalysis of P limitation impacts on plant growth, physiological, and morphological response to eCO2. We show that low P availability attenuated plant photosynthetic response to eCO2 by approximately one￢ﾀﾐquarter, leading to a reduced, but still positive photosynthetic response to eCO2 compared to those under high P availability. Furthermore, low P limited plant aboveground, belowground, and total biomass responses to eCO2, by 14.7%, 14.3%, and 12.4%, respectively, equivalent to an approximate halving of the eCO2 responses observed under high P availability. In comparison, low P availability did not significantly alter the eCO2￢ﾀﾐinduced changes in plant tissue nutrient concentration, suggesting tissue nutrient flexibility is an important mechanism allowing biomass response to eCO2 under low P availability. Low P significantly reduced the eCO2￢ﾀﾐinduced increase in leaf area by 14.3%, mirroring the aboveground biomass response, but low P did not affect the eCO2￢ﾀﾐinduced increase in root length. Woody plants exhibited stronger attenuation effect of low P on aboveground biomass response to eCO2 than non￢ﾀﾐwoody plants, while plants with different mycorrhizal associations showed similar responses to low P and eCO2 interaction. This meta￢ﾀﾐanalysis highlights crucial data gaps in capturing plant responses to eCO2 and low P availability. Field￢ﾀﾐbased experiments with longer￢ﾀﾐterm exposure of both CO2 and P manipulations are critically needed to provide ecosystem￢ﾀﾐscale understanding. Taken together, our results provide a quantitative baseline to constrain model￢ﾀﾐbased hypotheses of plant responses to eCO2 under P limitation, thereby improving projections of future global change impacts.

0106 biological sciences", "910", "01 natural sciences", "XXXXXX - Unknown", "soil phosphorus", "Humans", "phosphorus", "Photosynthesis", "mycorrhizae", "soils", "Ecosystem", "0105 earth and related environmental sciences", "580", "nutrient concentration", "2. However, if the soil pH is lower than 5.6, lime application is necessary. In this study the effects of lime and dolomite application in combination with NPK 15:15:15 fertilizer (600 kg ha￢ﾀﾓ1) on the macroelement contents (N, P, K, Ca, and Mg) in an extremely acid soil (pH 4.35) and raspberry leaves were evaluated during a three-year period. Optimal pH value for raspberry cultivation (5.84) was achieved with the application of 9 t ha￢ﾀﾓ1 of lime. The mineral nitrogen (NH4+NO3)-N content and P content in the soil after liming increased significantly, but P concentration stayed below the optimal values. Additionally, no changes were noted in K concentration in the soil. The Ca concentration increased significantly in all treatments, while the Mg content increased significantly only in the treatment with dolomite. The N content in the raspberry leaves increased, but K content decreased after liming. There was no change in P content in the leaves affected by liming. Lime increased Ca content in the leaves above the optimal values, while it did not affect the initially optimal Mg content in the leaves. After liming and NPK fertilization, the concentrations of N, P and K in the leaves were still below the optimal values, indicating a need for the combination of higher rates of fertilizer with lime in raspberry cultivation in very acid soils.

0106 biological sciences", "2.
