Estimating the production of these weed resources in the landscape is however not trivial as large-scale surveys of weed communities are usually conducted once in the season with a timing that may not coincide with the flowering and fruiting stages of all weed species. More, intraspecific variation in the mortality and phenology of individual weed species may arise from differences in the quality of the growing environment of each plant. In this study, we monitored the phenology of 30 common weed species in the field core and the field edge of 64 commercial fields grown with 6 crop types. Our hypothesis was that the production of resources by an individual plant would be modulated by its within-field location and by the crop type where it grows. We quantified floral (proportion, starting date and duration of flowering, dry biomass at flowering as a proxy for the amount of flowers) and seed resource production (proportion and starting date of fruiting). For most species, flowering and fruiting success were higher in field edges than in field cores and were lower in cereal crops than in other crops. Weeds flowered and fruited earlier and the flowering period was longer in field edges, except those of cereal crops. Dry biomass at flowering varied with field location either way, depending on the weed species, but tended to be lower in cereal crops than in other crops. This important intraspecific phenological variability in the production of seed and/or flower or resources should be considered when evaluating the contribution of weed communities to ecosystem services. Seasonal dynamics of fungi were studied in an almond orchard in California where experimental release of the atoxigenic biopesticide Aspergillus flavus AF36 to displace toxigenic Aspergillus strains has been conducted for five years. The presence of the vegetative compatibility group (VCG) YV36, to which AF36 belongs, in the blossoms, and the honey bees that attend these blossoms, was assessed. In blossoms, A. flavus frequencies ranged from 0 to 4.5%, depending on the year of study. Frequencies of honey bees carrying A. flavus ranged from 6.5 to 10%. Only one A. flavus isolate recovered from a blossom in 2016 belonged to YV36, while members of the VCG were not detected contaminating honey bees. Exposure of pollinator honey bees to AF36 was detected to be very low. The density of several Aspergillus species was found to increase during almond hull split and throughout the final stages of maturation; this also occurred in pistachio orchards during the maturation period. Additionally, we found that AF36 effectively limited almond aflatoxin contamination in laboratory assays. This study provides knowledge and understanding of the seasonal dynamics of Aspergillus fungi and will help design aflatoxin management strategies for almond. We focused on carabid beetles and spiders as they represent the  two groups of natural enemies in arable fields in Northwestern European  and widely used as bioindicators (Lang et al., 1999; Borchard et al.,  2014). We used pitfall traps to collect carabids and spiders in field  pairs that covered a gradient in land-use intensity and landscape  complexity, with fields within pairs having contrasting soil organic  carbon content.\u00a0 Pitfall traps (polypropylene beakers  155 mm high and 95 mm across) were used to survey ground-dwelling  arthropods during the wheat flowering season (late May to early June). We  placed one pitfall trap in the center of each treatment subplot at least  10 m from the field edge and filled it with 200 mL of a mixed solution of  2/3 water and 1/3 glycol and a drop of detergent to lower surface tension.  A square aluminum plate was placed approximately 10 cm above each pitfall  trap to prevent flooding by rain. Pitfall traps were opened for 10 days.  All of the collected arthropods were stored in 70% ethanol solution for  later identification. For the purpose of our study, the two most abundant  species groups, carabid beetles (<em>Carabidae</em>) and adult  spiders (<em>Araneae</em>), were selected as our bioindicators  and they were counted and identified to species level using standard keys  (Hackston, 2020; Nentwig et al., 2021). We determined the diet preference  of each carabid beetle species based on Larochelle (1990) and the hunting  strategy of all observed spider species based on Cardoso et al. (2011)  following Gall\u00e9 et al. (2019). Untreated control spider mite hotspots (- predatory mites) were compared with hotspots where predatory mites were released (+ predatory mites). The spider mites were heterogeneously distributed in small concentrations in the soil. Soil colonizing spider mites did not affect spider mite abundance on plants and reversed. We observed that spider mite migration occurred primarily from the edge of the field adjacent to the weed strip. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the efficacy of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) for suppressing spider mite hotspots in the cropland. We compared untreated spider mite hotspots with N. californicus treated hotspots and showed that a single release of predatory mites could result in a high level of control when spider mite infestation density was initially high. With this study, soil can be ruled out as a habitat for spider mites, and attention to spider mite pest control can be directed to plant infestations. The highly sensitive HRM real-time PCR assay was used for the quantification of the spider mites. Tetranychus urticae served as reference. The objective of the patchCrop experiment was to analyze the potential of small-scale diversification, as created by clustering patches of 5 different crops in a single field (\u201ePatchCropping\"), for bridging ecological and farming goals for the weed flora. \nThe PatchCrop experiment was carried out as an on-farm experiment on a typical agricultural farm in NE-Germany. The field with the patch crop design (70 ha) consisted of 30 patches (6x5 field units, of 5.184 m\u00b2 each) under nine different crops organized in 2 different crop rotations and 2 weed control intensities with 3 replications. The weed flora at the PatchCropp field was compared to the weed floras at 6 sole cropped fields in the surrounding the field with the PatchCrop experiment. The 6 reference sole cropping fields had a size between 10 and 46 ha and included 2 weed control intensities analogous to those at the PatchCrop field.
