Our aim was to test this hypothesis for intercropped durum wheat and faba bean along a P-fertilizer gradient. A field experiment was conducted in a long-term P-fertilizer trial with three rates of P-fertilization (No, Low and High P). Microbial biomass was assessed by chloroform fumigation-extraction. Quantitative PCR was applied to evaluate the abundance of relevant microbial groups. Phosphorus availability and microbial biomass systematically increased in the rhizosphere compared to bulk soil. P-fertilization resulted in higher abundance of targeted bacterial phyla, whole bacterial and fungal communities, and depressed mycorrhizal colonization of durum wheat, but not faba bean. Microbial biomass carbon significantly increased in the rhizosphere only in P-fertilized treatments, pointing to P limitation of microbial communities. Intercropping yielded a significant effect on rhizosphere microbial properties only at High P. Microbial biomass P increased in the rhizosphere of intercropped faba bean only at No P level, and was thus the sole finding supporting the stress-gradient hypothesis. P-fertilization was the main driver of microbial communities in this field trial, and P-fertilizer application modulated the species-specific effect in the intercrop. Plant performance did not validate the stress-gradient hypothesis as positive plant-plant interactions occurred regardless of the level of P-fertilization.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "engrais phosphaté", "F08 - Systèmes et modes de culture", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "F62 - Physiologie végétale - Croissance et développement", "mycorhization", "Triticum turgidum", "630", "fertilisation", "[SHS]Humanities and Social Sciences", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_37554", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_5800", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_10795", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_24199", "2. Managing agricultural systems for water conservation is a critical component of sustainable systems. We investigated the relationship between infiltrability and the distance to the nearest tree, and whether differences in macroporosity can account for differences in infiltrability. In both systems, preferential soil water flows were dominant compared to matrix flow. Trees in the pasture landscape improved infiltrability and preferential flow but had no significant effect in the coffee agroforestry system. After comparing rainfall intensity and frequency data to the measured infiltrability values, we conclude that trees in the pasture system reduce surface runoff at the highest observed rainfall intensities (>50 mm h −1 ). The volcanic soils of the coffee plantation are less degraded and their high natural permeability has been maintained. Since the coffee plants at this site are established (40 years) perennial vegetation with substantial residues and extensive root systems like trees, they improve soil physical properties similarly to trees. Trees increase hydrologic services in pasture lands, a rapidly expanding land use type across Latin America, and therefore may be a viable land management option for mitigating some of the negative environmental impacts associated with land clearing and animal husbandry. However, in land management practices where understorey perennial vegetation makes up a large proportion of the cover, such as for coffee agroforestry systems, the effect of trees on infiltration-related ecosystem services could be less pronounced
The objectives of our study were: (1) to quantify the effects of contrasting organic residue (OR) retention methods on tree growth and soil nutrient pools over a full Eucalyptus rotation and (2) to assess the potential of soil analyses to predict yields of fast-growing plantations established on tropical sandy soils. An experiment was set up in the Congo at the harvesting of the first rotation after afforestation of a native herbaceous savanna. Six treatments were set up in 0.26 ha plots and replicated in 4 blocks, with OR mass at planting ranging from 0 to 46.5 Mg ha −1 . Tree growth over the whole rotation was highly dependent on OR management at planting. Over-bark trunk volume 7 years after planting ranged from 96 m 3 ha −1 in the treatment with forest floor and harvest residue removal at planting to 164 m 3 ha −1 in the treatment with the largest amount of OR. A comparison of nutrient stocks within the ecosystem at planting and at the end of the rotation suggested that nutrient contents in OR were largely involved in the different response observed between treatments. OR management treatments did not significantly modify most of the nutrient concentrations in the upper layers of the mineral soil. Conventional soil analyses performed before planting and at ages 1 and 3 years were unable to detect differences between treatments despite large differences in tree growth. In contrast, linear regressions between stand aboveground biomass at harvesting and OR mass at planting (independent variable) showed that OR mass was an excellent predictor of stand yield ( R 2 = 0.99). A large share of soil fertility comes from organic material above the mineral soil in highly weathered sandy soils and OR mass at planting might be used in conjunction with soil analyses to assess the potential of these soils to support forest plantations.
0106 biological sciences", "570", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_7170", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "rendement des cultures", "Slash", "F62 - Physiologie végétale - Croissance et développement", "forêt tropicale", "01 natural sciences", "630", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_10176", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_24904", "sol tropical", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_16118", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_5387", "2. The objectives of this study were: (1) to quantify the effect of contrasting methods of organic residue management on tree growth and soil CO2 effluxes in the first 2 years after planting and (2) to evaluate the impact of organic residue manipulations on the mineralization of soil organic matter over the length of the experiment. Three treatments were setup in 0.125 ha plots and replicated in three blocks at the harvesting of a Congolese Eucalyptus stand, resulting in an aboveground organic residue mass ranging from 0 to 6.3 kg m 2 . The mineralization of SOM was deduced in each treatment by partitioning sources of soil CO2 effluxes using decomposition experiments and by upscaling specific root respiration. Soil CO2 effluxes were greatly affected by seasons and organic residue manipulation, although there were no significant changes in topsoil water content and topsoil temperature over most of the study period. Aboveground organic residue was the first contributor to soil CO2 efflux in the two treatments with a litter layer. Organic residue management did not significantly influence the mineralization of SOM in our study, probably due to the low quality of Eucalyptus litter, or to the hypothetical lack of dissolved organic carbon transfers from litter to soil. A strong relationship was found between cumulative heterotrophic CO2 efflux and tree growth, supporting the hypothesis that the early growth of Eucalyptus trees in a sandy tropical soil is largely dependent on the nutrients released by the decomposition of organic residues.
P33 - Chimie et physique du sol", "0106 biological sciences", "Tropical forest plantation", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "MATTER DYNAMICS", "F62 - Physiologie végétale - Croissance et développement", "Eucalyptus growth", "01 natural sciences", "630", "Harvest organic residue", "NUTRIENT ACCUMULATION", "STAND-LEVEL", "SOIL CARBON BALANCE", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_33553", "ABOVEGROUND LITTER", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_16118", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_35657", "580", "BIOGEOCHEMICAL CYCLES", "2. Earthworms are known to closely interact with above-ground and under-ground soil biota and particularly with plants and microfaunal communities. This study was aimed at investigating, under greenhouse conditions, the effects of the earthworm Pontoscolex corethrurus on banana growth and nutrient uptake, and assessing the influences of this earthworm on the development of an inoculated population of R. similis. Six-week-old tissue culture banana plants were submitted to four treatments: with P. corethrurus, R. similis, P. corethrurus+R. similis, and a control with no earthworms or nematodes. At the end of the experiment, the P. corethrurus treatments showed significantly higher leaf surface areas, shoot dry root weights, and root fresh weights than those without earthworms. This root growth enhancement probably contributed to the evident but non-significant decrease in the density of nematodes in the roots, even though earthworms did not reduce the total number of nematodes per whole root system. Moreover, the presence of earthworms slightly alleviated the severity of root damage. N bioavailability in the soil, along with N, Ca, and Mg content of banana plants, were also significantly increased in the presence of earthworms. Our results demonstrated that banana plant growth and nutrition were positively influenced by earthworms. Cropping practices that boost the development of earthworm communities in soil should therefore be promoted to enhance sustainability and to naturally alleviate nematode impact.
[SDE] Environmental Sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "PRATYLENCHIDAE", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "endogeic species", "nutrient uptake", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_29111", "pratylenchidae", "F62 - Physiologie végétale - Croissance et développement", "lutte antinématode", "Musa acuminata", "630", "[SHS]Humanities and Social Sciences", "03 medical and health sciences", "absorption de substances nutritives", "Oligochaeta", "GLOSSOSCOLECIDAE", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_4993", "580", "2. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that intercropping could promote P cycling, through microbial biomass P (MBP) changes, in a field trial in a Mediterranean climate. Changes in microbial biomass carbon (MBC), MBP, and inorganic P availability in the rhizosphere of intercropped species were thus investigated in durum wheat/chickpea and durum wheat/lentil intercrops and compared to the bulk soils as well as the rhizosphere of each species grown alone. When expressed relative to the bulk soil, MBC increased in the rhizosphere only for the intercropped plants, irrespective of species. Relative to MBC in the rhizosphere of sole crops, MBC increased in the rhizosphere of the two legume species when intercropped with durum wheat, while no such effect was found for durum wheat. We were unable to detect an increase in P availability in the rhizosphere as a response to intercropping in any of the three crop species, but there was a systematic increase in available P in the rhizosphere relative to the corresponding bulk soil. Fairly similar patterns were observed for MBP as for MBC, except within the rhizosphere of durum wheat when intercropped with chickpea: relative to the bulk soil, MBP increased in the rhizosphere of both lentil and chickpea when intercropped with durum wheat as well as in the rhizosphere of durum wheat when intercropped with chickpea. The differences in microbial biomass changes for a given cereal (durum wheat) when intercropped with two different legumes, suggest that plants have strong species-specific influences on each other as well as on the soil environment. The molar ratios of MBC to MBP (MM C:P) did not vary significantly except for the rhizosphere of durum wheat intercropped with chickpea, which was fairly low (16:1), about half the values found in the other treatments (26–40:1). These MM C:P values were lower than those generally reported in soils (38–60:1), verifying the hypothesis that microbes can increase storage of soil P in their biomass, creating stocks of microbial P in the soil when P availability is high. In this Mediterranean climate where surface soils undergo frequent drying-rewetting, known for liberation of microbial biomass, MBP could be an important factor influencing P availability. It is adapted to poor soils due to the production of cluster roots, which are made of dozens of determinate lateral roots that drastically improve soil exploration and nutrient acquisition (mostly phosphate). Using long-read sequencing technologies, we provide a high-quality genome sequence of a cultivated accession of white lupin (2n￢ﾀﾉ=￢ﾀﾉ50, 451￢ﾀﾉMb), as well as de novo assemblies of a landrace and a wild relative. We describe a modern accession displaying increased soil exploration capacity through early establishment of lateral and cluster roots. We also show how seed quality may have been impacted by domestication in term of protein profiles and alkaloid content. The availability of a high-quality genome assembly together with companion genomic and transcriptomic resources will enable the development of modern breeding strategies to increase and stabilize white lupin yield.

Repetitive Sequences", " Nucleic Acid/genetics", "0301 basic medicine", "[SDV]Life Sciences [q-bio]", "Plant Roots/genetics", "Gene Dosage", "Plant Science", "Crop", "Alkaloids/chemistry", "Plant Roots", "Gene", "Repetitive Sequences", "630", "Agricultural and Biological Sciences", "Domestication", "Soil", "Models", "Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation in Legumes", "Gene Duplication", "[SDV.BV] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Vegetal Biology", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_3224", "Plant Proteins/metabolism", "Plant Proteins", "2. It can be found in a few species from a dozen botanical families, including white lupin (Lupinus albus) in the Fabaceae family. These amazing structures are produced in phosphate￢ﾀﾐdeprived conditions and are made of hundreds of short roots also known as rootlets. White lupin is the only crop bearing CRs and is considered as the model species for CR studies. However, little information is available on CRs atypical development, including the molecular events that trigger their formation. To provide insights on CR formation, we performed an anatomical and cellular description of rootlet development in white lupin. Starting with a classic histological approach, we described rootlet primordium development and defined eight developmental stages from rootlet initiation to their emergence. Due to the major role of hormones in the developmental program of root system, we next focussed on auxin￢ﾀﾐrelated mechanisms. We observed the establishment of an auxin maximum through rootlet development in transgenic roots expressing the DR5:GUS auxin reporter. Expression analysis of the main auxin￢ﾀﾐrelated genes [TIR, Auxin Response Factor (ARF) and AUX/IAA] during a detailed time course revealed specific expression associated with the formation of the rootlet primordium. We showed that L. albus TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE 1b is expressed during rootlet primordium formation and that L. albus AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 5 is expressed in the vasculature but absent in the primordium itself. Altogether, our results describe the very early cellular events leading to CR formation and reveal some of the auxin￢ﾀﾐrelated mechanisms.

0301 basic medicine", "racine laterale", "Plant Roots", "inhibiteur de transport d'auxine", "physiologie végétale", "03 medical and health sciences", "Gene Expression Regulation", " Plant", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_16034", "[SDV.BV]Life Sciences [q-bio]/Vegetal Biology", "[SDV.BV] Life Sciences [q-bio]/Vegetal Biology", "Cloning", " Molecular", "Promoter Regions", " Genetic", "Plant Proteins", "580", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_25189", "0303 health sciences", "système racinaire", "Vegetal Biology", "interaction sol racine", "Indoleacetic Acids", "Plants", " Genetically Modified", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_27527", "Lupinus", "Lupinus albus", "lupinus albus", "phosphate inorganique", "Biologie végétale", "expression des gènes", "http://aims.fao.org/aos/agrovoc/c_4464
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/ppl.12714
https://doi.org/10.1111/ppl.12714
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items?keywords=physiologie+v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tale&f=json
en-US
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items?keywords=physiologie+v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tale&f=html
en-US
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items?keywords=physiologie+v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tale&
en-US
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items?keywords=physiologie+v%C3%A9g%C3%A9tale&offset=8
