Although the use of these inputs is legal in organic systems and also applied in non-organic agriculture, their use by organic growers raises questions for organic practice, which aspires to be free from toxic, non-renewable chemicals. Data on the current use of permitted plant protection inputs is currently scarce, especially in horticulture where chemical inputs deserve special attention since horticultural products are often readily edible. A mapping of the use of copper, sulphur and mineral oils was conducted by collecting expert knowledge across 10 European countries during May\u2013October 2018, i.e. before the limitation of copper use to 4\u00a0kg\u00a0ha\u22121\u00a0year\u22121 from February 1, 2019. Results show that copper is widely used by Mediterranean organic growers in citrus, olive, tomato and potato production. The annual limit of 6\u00a0kg\u00a0ha\u22121\u00a0year\u22121 was not always respected. We also found that tomato producers apply high amounts of copper in winter crops in greenhouses. Mineral oils are applied to control scales, mites and whiteflies. Sulphur is also commonly used by organic vegetable growers, especially in greenhouses. However, there is currently no quantitative synthesis of the impacts of pesticides on soil fauna communities.</p>  <p>Here, using a meta\uffe2\uff80\uff90analysis of 54 studies and 294 observations, we quantify pesticide effects on the abundance, biomass, richness and diversity of natural soil fauna communities across a wide range of environmental contexts. We also identify scenarios with the most detrimental effects on soil fauna communities by analysing the effects of different pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, broad\uffe2\uff80\uff90spectrum substances and multiple substances), different application rates and temporal extents (short\uffe2\uff80\uff90 or long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term), as well as the response of different functional groups of soil animals (body size categories, presence of exoskeleton).</p>  <p>Pesticides overall decreased the abundance and diversity of soil fauna communities across studies (Grand mean effect size (Hedge's g)\uffe2\uff80\uff89=\uffe2\uff80\uff89\uffe2\uff88\uff920.30\uffe2\uff80\uff89+/\uffe2\uff88\uff92\uffe2\uff80\uff890.16) and had stronger effects on soil fauna diversity than abundance. The most detrimental scenarios involved multiple substances, broad\uffe2\uff80\uff90spectrum substances and insecticides, which significantly decreased soil fauna diversity even at recommended rates. We found no evidence that pesticide effects dampen over time, as short\uffe2\uff80\uff90term and long\uffe2\uff80\uff90term studies exhibited similar mean effect sizes.</p>  <p>Policy implications: Our study highlights that pesticide use has significant detrimental non\uffe2\uff80\uff90target effects on soil biodiversity, eroding a substantial part of global biodiversity and threatening ecosystem health. This provides crucial evidence supporting recent policies, such as the European Green Deal, that aim to reduce pesticide use in agriculture to conserve biodiversity. The detrimental effects of multiple substances revealed here are particularly concerning because realistic pesticide use often combines several substances targeting different pests and diseases over the crop season. AM fungi occur in the majority of natural habitats and they provide a range of important ecological services, in particular by improving plant nutrition, stress resistance and tolerance, soil structure and fertility. AM fungi also interact with most crop plants including cereals, vegetables, and fruit trees, therefore, they receive increasing attention for their potential use in sustainable agriculture. Basic research of the past decade has revealed the existence of a dedicated recognition and signaling pathway that is required for AM. Furthermore, recent evidence provided new insight into the exchange of nutritional benefits between the symbiotic partners. The great potential for application of AM has given rise to a thriving industry for AM-related products for agriculture, horticulture, and landscaping. The goal was to see how nutrient deficiencies affect soil fertility and harvest yields in sandy soils. In 1949, long-term field experiment D4 was split into two subfields: D41 and D42. Due to their different treatments, the datasets for these two subfields are available separately.\nD41 has maintained the same treatments since the beginning of the experiment, reducing the number to four replicates in 1949, so that D42 could be given an alternate treatment (further information in the field description for D42 https://doi.org/10.20387/bonares-eprk-bj95). \nSince 1957, the crop rotation has been potatoes - spring barley - silage corn \u2013 spring barley. The experimental site was founded in 1936 by Prof. Kurt Opitz is located about 30 kilometres south of Berlin. This site represents typical farming conditions of the young moraine landscapes of the Weichselian glaciation of Northeast Germany. According to the German classification of soil-climate spaces, the experimental site is located in the area of \u201cdry-warm diluvial soils of East German lowlands\u201d (diluvial: soils developed in glacial sediments). Within this area, soil values of the \u201cGerman soil taxation framework\u201d of less than 30 out of a maximum 100 are common.\nThyrow is located at approximately 42 m above sea level on the southern edge of the Teltow, a Weichselian ground moraine plateau. The slope is predominantly flat at 2 %. The dominant soil type for this is location is a Retisol developed in a sand over a deep loam. As typical for ground moraines the boundaries between the sandy and loamy layer vary intensely between 60 cm to 200 cm. This causes small-scale differences in water and nutrient resources especially of the subsoil. The plant available water capacity of the soil in the effective root zone (60 \u2013 80 cm deep) fluctuates between 50 to 150 mm. These soils are at high risk of nutrient leaching, acidification and surface siltation because of the low clay and humus content of the topsoil.\nDue to the soil\u2019s low water-holding capacity, the crop yields at the Thyrow Field Station show great fluctuations dependent on weather conditions. The climatic water balance during the growing period is negative and the overall low water availability at this location limits the crop yields. Mean annual temperature for the period 1991-2020 was measured to be 9.7\u00b0C, with annual precipitation 533 mm. Annual crop yields are particularly negatively affected by low precipitation from April to June.\nThe two areas that are managed by the research station are separated by the Thyrower Dorfstra\u00dfe (Landesstra\u00dfe 795). The main experimental area, where the long-term experiments are conducted, is located on the farm (Hof) side, along with two other trials for the implementation of field experiments. Northwest of the Landesstra\u00dfe there is another experimental area (Schlag 3), where other experiments are conducted to answer questions about differing agricultural systems, soil management, The spider mites were heterogeneously distributed in small concentrations in the soil. Soil colonizing spider mites did not affect spider mite abundance on plants and reversed. We observed that spider mite migration occurred primarily from the edge of the field adjacent to the weed strip. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the efficacy of the predatory mite Neoseiulus californicus (McGregor) for suppressing spider mite hotspots in the cropland. We compared untreated spider mite hotspots with N. californicus treated hotspots and showed that a single release of predatory mites could result in a high level of control when spider mite infestation density was initially high. With this study, soil can be ruled out as a habitat for spider mites, and attention to spider mite pest control can be directed to plant infestations.
