Such an approach allows species to be grouped according to particular functional characteristics. Increasingly viewed as an extremely important group of model organisms, hoverflies have been the focus of a variety of ecological studies. Based on data regarding selected functional traits of hoverflies registered in Southeast Europe, the main aims of our study were to define hoverfly functional groups according to the similarity of these traits, as well as to compare the representation of delineated hoverfly functional groups among these vegetation types. We used fuzzy clustering to classify 568 SE European hoverfly species into five functional groups. The principle trait separating these functional groups was larval feeding type, followed by size of species range, flight ability, number of generations, inundation tolerance, and tolerance to human impact. For 9 of 11 vegetation types, the dominant functional group was characterized by species with good flight ability, having high human impact tolerance and more annual generations. The remaining two vegetation types, South\uffe2\uff80\uff90west Balkan sub\uffe2\uff80\uff90Mediterranean mixed oak forests and Mediterranean mixed forests, showed disparate dominance patterns, indicating that richness of functional groups is dependent on vegetation. Loss of pollination services can potentially be predicted by models that link bee abundances with landscape\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale land\uffe2\uff80\uff90use, but there is little knowledge on the degree to which these statistical models are transferable across time and space. This study assesses the transferability of models for wild bee abundance in a mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crop across space (from one region to another) and across time (from one year to another). The models used existing data on bumblebee and solitary bee abundance in winter oilseed rape fields, together with high\uffe2\uff80\uff90resolution land\uffe2\uff80\uff90use crop\uffe2\uff80\uff90cover and semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitats data, from studies conducted in five different regions located in four countries (Sweden, Germany, Netherlands and the UK), in three different years (2011, 2012, 2013). We developed a hierarchical model combining all studies and evaluated the transferability using cross\uffe2\uff80\uff90validation. We found that both the landscape\uffe2\uff80\uff90scale cover of mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crops and permanent semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitats, including grasslands and forests, are important drivers of wild bee abundance in all regions. However, while the negative effect of increasing mass\uffe2\uff80\uff90flowering crops on the density of the pollinators is consistent between studies, the direction of the effect of semi\uffe2\uff80\uff90natural habitat is variable between studies. The transferability of these statistical models is limited, especially across regions, but also across time. Dark diversity represents the set of species that can potentially inhabit a given area under particular ecological conditions, but are currently \u2018missing\u2019 from a site. This concept allows characterisation of the mechanisms determining why species are sometimes absent from an area that seems ecologically suitable for them.</p><p>2. The aim of this study was to determine the dark diversity of hoverflies in south\u2010eastern Europe and to discuss the role of different functional traits that might increase the likelihood of species contributing to dark diversity. Based on expert opinion, the Syrph the Net database and known occurrences of species, the study estimated species pools, and observed and dark diversities within each of 11 defined vegetation types for 564 hoverfly species registered in south\u2010eastern Europe. To detect the most important functional traits contributing to species being in dark diversity across different vegetation types, a random forest algorithm and respective statistics for variable importance were used.</p><p>3. The highest dark diversity was found for southwest Balkan sub\u2010Mediterranean mixed oak forest type, whereas the lowest was in Mediterranean mixed forest type. Three larval feeding modes (saproxylic, and phytophagous on bulbs or roots) were found to be most important for determining the probability of a species contributing to hoverfly dark diversity, based on univariate correlations and random forest analysis.</p><p>4. However, it remains unexplored how they modify the niche differences that stabilise species coexistence and the average fitness differences driving competitive dominance. We conducted a field study in Mediterranean annual grasslands to parameterise population models of six competing plant species. Spatially explicit floral visitor assemblages and soil salinity variation were characterized for each species. Both floral visitors and soil salinity modified species population dynamics via direct changes in seed production and indirect changes in competitive responses. Although the magnitude and sign of these changes were species specific, floral visitors promoted coexistence at neighbourhood scales while soil salinity did so over larger scales by changing the superior competitor's identity. However, it is characterized by low yields and phenotypic plasticity related to environmental conditions when cultivated in different locations in Europe. Current research objective was to evaluate L. mutabilis agro-morphological performance in two locations in Greece and to record its pollinators, since these can contribute to optimization of crop performance. For this purpose, eight Andean lupin accessions, one white and one blue lupin commercial varieties were evaluated for 71 agro-morphological traits in a Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. Combined Analysis over Location presented a significant accession-location interaction for traits of economic interest such as seed crude protein and 100 seed weight. Seed crude protein was higher in L. mutabilis accessions (up to 43.8 g 100 g\uffe2\uff88\uff921 seed) than white and blue lupins. Andean lupin yielded up to 327 kg ha\uffe2\uff88\uff921 (LIB214) in Kalamata, while its yield was lower than the white lupin in Athens. Using principal component analysis, three groups of accessions were formed, one by each lupin species and three within Andean lupin accessions. Floral traits such as color and size are related to pollinators diversity and preference. Insect pollinators and floral traits interplay among different lupin species was examined. Pollinators visited L. mutabilis flowers belong to the genera Anthophora, Bombus, Megachile and Xylocopa. The results of the present study, indicate that L.mutabilis has agronomic potential and enhances above ground biodiversity, however breeding for higher yields is required.</p>", "keywords": ["0106 biological sciences", "2. Assessment of Lupinus mutabilis genetic material in European conditions started more than 40 years ago, with the characterization of a vast number of accessions from the Andean region. In this review, abiotic and biotic constraints to L. mutabilis cultivation in European soil and climatic conditions are discussed, and cultivation management practices are suggested. The beneficial interaction of L. mutabilis with Bradyrhizobium strains in the soil and various pollinator species is also discussed, and the effect of abiotic stresses on these interactions is highlighted. Prospects of alternative uses of L. mutabilis biomass in Northern Europe and opportunities for breeding strategies are discussed. Dark diversity represents the set of species that can potentially inhabit a given area under particular ecological conditions, but are currently \u2018missing\u2019 from a site. This concept allows characterisation of the mechanisms determining why species are sometimes absent from an area that seems ecologically suitable for them.</p>                   <p>2. The aim of this study was to determine the dark diversity of hoverflies in south\u2010eastern Europe and to discuss the role of different functional traits that might increase the likelihood of species contributing to dark diversity. Based on expert opinion, the Syrph the Net database and known occurrences of species, the study estimated species pools, and observed and dark diversities within each of 11 defined vegetation types for 564 hoverfly species registered in south\u2010eastern Europe. To detect the most important functional traits contributing to species being in dark diversity across different vegetation types, a random forest algorithm and respective statistics for variable importance were used.</p>                   <p>3. The highest dark diversity was found for southwest Balkan sub\u2010Mediterranean mixed oak forest type, whereas the lowest was in Mediterranean mixed forest type. Three larval feeding modes (saproxylic, and phytophagous on bulbs or roots) were found to be most important for determining the probability of a species contributing to hoverfly dark diversity, based on univariate correlations and random forest analysis.</p>                   <p>4. We used fuzzy clustering to classify 568 SE European hoverfly species into five functional groups. The principle trait separating these functional groups was larval feeding type, followed by size of species range, flight ability, number of generations, inundation tolerance, and tolerance to human impact. For 9 of 11 vegetation types, the dominant functional group was characterized by species with good flight ability, having high human impact tolerance and more annual generations. Combined Analysis over Location presented a significant accession-location interaction for traits of economic interest such as seed crude protein and 100 seed weight. Seed crude protein was higher in L. mutabilis accessions (up to 43.8 g 100 g\u22121 seed) than white and blue lupins. Andean lupin yielded up to 327 kg ha\u22121 (LIB214) in Kalamata, while its yield was lower than the white lupin in Athens. Using principal component analysis, three groups of accessions were formed, one by each lupin species and three within Andean lupin accessions. Floral traits such as color and size are related to pollinators diversity and preference. Insect pollinators and floral traits interplay among different lupin species was examined. Pollinators visited L. mutabilis flowers belong to the genera Anthophora, Bombus, Megachile and Xylocopa. The scientific goal is an improved understanding of complex soil-plant, plant-plant, plant-microbiome and plant-agricultural ecosystem interactions as a basis for sustainable crop production. Under the stress conditions of climate change, this is characterized by increased water and nutrient uptake from previously underutilized soil areas, more complete use of irradiation, higher storage of atmospheric carbon in the soil, more diverse, more resilient microbiomes in soil, roots and crops, greater attractiveness for flower-visiting insects and higher crop yields and quality. The increase in production and quality through the intensification of ecological processes, which is modeled here as an example for Hesse, is aimed at the health of soil, plants, animals, people and the planet and thus follows the \u201cOne Health\u201d approach.\nUsing an experimental platform developed across contrasting locations, TRIO is quantifying and monetarily evaluating the ecosystem services of new combinations of resource-complementary crops. Model-based spatial and temporal upscaling of the experimental data generates site-specific knowledge on climate- and biodiversity-protecting and climate-change-adapted cultivation systems for the production of high-quality, diverse food in Hesse, which is directly incorporated into agricultural practice and advice via the associated partners. Quantitative market research approaches are used to determine the preferences / values of various stakeholders.\nThe three university sites in Kassel, Giessen and Geisenheim are working in the four project areas of soil-plant interactions, agricultural biocenosis, modeling and upscaling and socio-economic evaluation at four trial sites in Hesse (trial sites in Frankenhausen (University of Kassel), Weilburger Grenze and Gro\u00df-Gerau (JLU Giessen) and Darmstadt (Forschungsring e.V.), supplemented by five practical sites in Hesse and a very dry site at ZALF in Brandenburg. There is an increasing demand for protein crops suitable for Europe and this species is a potential candidate. Assessment of Lupinus mutabilis genetic material in European conditions started more than 40 years ago, with the characterization of a vast number of accessions from the Andean region. In this review, abiotic and biotic constraints to L. mutabilis cultivation in European soil and climatic conditions are discussed, and cultivation management practices are suggested. The beneficial interaction of L. mutabilis with Bradyrhizobium strains in the soil and various pollinator species is also discussed, and the effect of abiotic stresses on these interactions is highlighted. Prospects of alternative uses of L. mutabilis biomass in Northern Europe and opportunities for breeding strategies are discussed. In conclusion, the different approach to crop modeling for Southern and Northern European climatic conditions is highlighted.
