To comprehensively assess these priorities, we identify and describe archetypical viewpoints on soil management among European farmers. We analyse interviews conducted with 132 farmers from five case study regions using Q-Methodology, a mixed quantitative and qualitative method. We identify five archetypical viewpoints that are distinct in their focus on soil health, farm economics, social sustainability, traditional farming values, and risk avoidance, respectively. By comparing the results from three different analytical approaches, we find that these viewpoints are partly—but by no means fully—context-dependent. This implies that farmers’ needs do not only vary due to natural farming conditions and farm structural conditions, but also due to their subjective worldviews. Knowledge about these archetypical viewpoints can help policy makers and advisory services to support farmers in changing their soil management. Policies, information, or advice can be tailored to the needs of all viewpoints. We identify support measures that are potentially attractive for each of the archetypes in a series of workshops with farmers and other stakeholders. These include, among many others: a) information materials and practical advice for the soil health-focused farmers, b) financial support measures for economically-focused farmers, c) consumer education and support for on-farm experimentation for the social sustainability-focused farmers, d) education and support for farm succession for traditionally-minded farmers, and e) insurance instruments and investment support for risk-averse farmers.
farmer viewpoints", "Q Methodology", "Qualitative interviews", "farmer typology", "soil management
["creator
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13890288
The main goal of the Soil Mission MARVIC project is to develop a framework for designing harmonized context-specific Monitoring, Reporting and Verification (MRV) systems for carbon farming, in support of the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) regulation. The agreement of participants with proposed definitions and indicator allocations was demanded and the possibility for text comments was provided. The results showed a high level of agreement with the proposed definitions, only a few were rated distinctively lower than the average and therefore chosen for reformulation. This report is part of the EJP SOIL SERENA project. It presents the way some stakeholders have been involved in the project to validate mapping products of soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats, which have been produced by some harmonised cookbooks. The cookbooks are first presented and their concern: as far as soil threats are concerned, and as far as soil-based ecosystem services are concerned. A cookbook for an evaluation of bundles is also presented. The list of countries which have evaluated the different products is then precised. The results of the evaluation by stakeholders are commented all together, without any relation to a specific country. They demonstrate that the results are more likely understood by scientists than by policy makers or farmers. For the latter, the scale of the maps are not relevant with their own interest. The maps of erosion, SOC loss and soil sealing seem to be more easily understood by the stakeholder that the GHG regulation, and the bundles, with which stakeholders are not familiar. The term Soil data assimilation has been chosen by the autors as an alternative to the terms harmonisation and standardisation, which already have a specific meaning in the soil domain: standardisation; aligning soil data to a common model, using common codelists. harmonisation; transforming results from observations and measurements to values as if all results for a property are measured using the same procedure, by applying so called Pedotransfer Functions (PTF). The process of assimilation also aims to capture additional aspects, such as finding, downloading and using the data. Most of these aspects are also well described as part of the FAIR principles. Within PROMISCES technologies to remediate PFAS and iPMT(s) in several environmental media have been developed. This deliverable D2.4 'Planning & design tool for drinking water treatment for PFAS & industrial chemicals' reports on a tool developed to improve planning and design of drinking water treatment trains for PFAS and iPMT, especially focussing on the adsorption onto granular activated carbon (GAC), alternative adsorbents and removal using ion exchange (IX) resins. Despite several previous studies on PFAS and iPMT removal during drinking water treatment, there are still information gaps on how to best implement suitable treatment trains in practice. The design of a suitable treatment train will depend on the effectiveness of the adsorbent for the removal of various mixtures of chemicals, different background water qualities as well as treatment goals. Modelling tools can be used to predict treatment performance under varying conditions and are especially helpful to improve the informative value of pilot tests. For example, potential changes in influent concentration, background water quality, flow rate, adsorbent bed height not covered in pilot tests can be simulated using models. Whereas GAC adsorption is already well studied, competitive adsorption of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and PFAS and iPMT is less understood and design tools are lacking. The developed drinking water treatment and design tool (DWTDT) is applicable for fixed-bed adsorber design in water treatment trains. It allows to predict operation times until exhaustion of fixed-bed adsorbers using GAC or ion exchange resins. This includes a rough estimation of ideal breakthrough using equilibrium isotherm data as main input data as well as prediction of the dynamic breakthrough using additional input parameters describing internal and external mass transfer. Dynamic breakthrough prediction is based on the pore surface diffusion model (PSDM) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and extended with the so-called tracer model (TRM), allowing to map the breakthrough of DOM and its competing effects on PFAS and iPMT removal. Both, the original model by the EPA as well as the DWTDT were developed using the programming language python. A user interface was built for the DWTDT to make it more user-friendly. The model was tested with experimental input data from the laboratory tests and validated with pilot plant data gained in the PROMISCES project. The DWTDT is publicly available on GitHub. This will allow users to simulate simultaneous DOM, PFAS and iPMT breakthrough in drinking water treatment trains using adsorbents or ion exchange resins provided the necessary input data including single solute isotherm data, external mass transfer coefficients, internal diffusion coefficients, adsorption parameters for DOM background are known or can be estimated.
Deliverable", "Adsorption Analysis", "iPMT", "PFAS", "Tracer Model", "Pore Surface Diffusion Model", "H2020 PROMISCES", "Adsorption", "Drinking water treatment processes", "Ideal Adsorbed Solution Theory
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.13982527
Open AccessDisclaimer:The data are derived from the calculation of indicators based on a standard methodology established as part of the EJP Soil SERENA programme. The Deliverable 2.3.1 developed the second step of the harmonization of STs and SESs indicators, whereas this deliverable developed the third step of the global tiered strategy for harmonisation and was mainly focused on the definition of methods for the harmonised assessment of indicators of STs and SESs at the member state (MS) level. The deliverable was focused on soil erosion (ST) and soil erosion control (SES), soil organic carbon (SOC) loss (ST), greenhouse gas (GHG) and climate regulation (SES), and soil sealing (ST) as well as a bundle of STs/SESs. The current data sources to monitor crop yield, such as regional agriculture statistics, are often lacking in spatial and temporal resolution. Remotely sensed vegetation indices (VIs) such as NDVI are able to assess crop yield using empirical modelling strategies. Empirical NDVI-based crop yield models were evaluated by comparing the model performance with similar models used in different regions. The integral NDVI and the peak NDVI were weak predictors of winter wheat yield in northern Belgium. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum) yield variability was better predicted by monthly precipitation during tillering and anthesis than by NDVI-derived yield proxies in the period from 2016 to 2018 (R2 = 0.66). The NDVI series were not sensitive enough to yield affecting weather conditions during important phenological stages such as tillering and anthesis and were weak predictors in empirical crop yield models. In conclusion, winter wheat yield modelling using NDVI-derived yield proxies as predictor variables is dependent on the environment.

yield estimation", "PREDICTION", "NDVI", "Triticum aestivum", "0703 Crop and Pasture Production", "3002 Agriculture", " land and farm management", "3004 Crop and pasture production", "Belgium", "0502 Environmental Science and Management", "Triticum aestivum", "2. By co-working with relevant stakeholders, the project provided co-developed indicators and associated cookbooks to assess and map them, to report both on soil degradation, soil-based ecosystem services and their bundles, under actual conditions and for climate and land-use changes, at the regional, national, and European scales. This SERENA dataset (100 m resolution) of soil orgnanic carbon concentration (0-20 cm soil layer) for Flanders was mainly produced to test the methodology of the SERENA SOC LOSS cookbook of the European SERENA EJP SOIL project. The data was prepared according to the methodology of SERENA SOC LOSS cookbook. The objective of SERENA project was to develop methods to calculate and map soil-based ecosystem services and soil threats. Soil organic carbon concentration was used as an indicator for soil organic carbon loss (ST). The map was based on digital soil mapping according to the method used in the EJP SOIL project WP6: Digital soil mapping approach with random forest using ISRIC workflow seedling. To create the soil organic carbon concentration map, we used soil organic carbon data of the regional soil organic carbon monitoring network Cmon in Flanders (0-10 and 10-30 cm soil layer) from the period 2021-2024. The soil organic carbon concentration of the 0-20 cm was derived from the 0-10 and 10-30 cm Cmon data. The following auxiliary data was used: Digitale bodemkaart van het Vlaams Gewest: bodemtypes; Regional climate data; Landgebruik - Vlaanderen - toestand 2022; Tertiair geologische kaart (1/50.000); Bodembedekkingskaart (BBK), 1m resolutie, opname 2021; WRB Soil Units 40k: Bodemkaart van het Vlaamse Gewest volgens het internationale bodemclassificatiesysteem World Reference Base op schaal 1:40.000; Digitaal Hoogtemodel Vlaanderen II, DSM, raster, 1 m. The dataset will be mostly useful as a reference result for actors that want to learn to implement the part of the soil organic carbon loss cookbook of SERENA dealing with the creation of a SOC concentration map. It can have limited use as an interim SOC concentration map for Flanders until a better map becomes available using an optimised methodology and/or new data from the regional soil organic carbon monitoring network that was not yet available when this map was created. The scenarios incorporate NEP calculations from the SERENA project’s GHG Cookbook, which integrates MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) terrestrial primary productivity data with spatially explicit climate variables, such as average temperatures (derived from minimum and maximum daily temperatures) and soil volumetric moisture content. The baseline NEP layer for this analysis was derived from the GHG Cookbook’s 8-day NEP calculation for April 24 to May 1, 2014. This study specifically mapped NEP values in wheat fields within Peipsiääre municipality, Estonia, under the RCP4.5 scenario for the future periods 2041–2070 and 2071–2100. The findings provide initial insights into NEP scenario modeling related to climate change, indicating that more advanced analyses would be advantageous for refining the methodology. Furthermore, incorporating Estonia’s specific pedoclimatic conditions and considering the dynamics of terrestrial primary productivity within the datasets would greatly improve the accuracy of projections. This dataset includes an 8-day NEP layer for wheat fields in Peipsiääre municipality, Estonia, under the RCP4.5 climate pathway for the periods 2041–2070 and 2071–2100.
