This database consolidates information from various sources, including the European Soil Database, the 1:1 million soil map of China, and national soil maps from Afghanistan, Ghana, and T\u00fcrkiye. It has a spatial resolution of around 1 km and is revised in 2013 and 2023. HWSD v2.0 includes detailed information on soil mapping units, general soil unit information, and specific physical and chemical soil unit characteristics across seven depth layers.  The database fields cover a wide range of attributes, such as soil texture, bulk density, organic carbon content, pH, and cation exchange capacity. The harmonization process ensures that data from different sources is standardized and integrated, providing a consistent and reliable dataset for various applications. However, the HWSD v2.0 has some limitations, such as combining soil inventories gathered at different times, scales, and precision, which may affect its reliability for national studies. It is recommended to use national-level harmonized soil databases for more accurate results in specific regions.  For Portugal's mainland, the data presented in the HWSD v2.0 dataset is sourced from the European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC), which contains various metrics of chemical and physical soil properties. Out of the 2882 Portuguese parishes, only 22 are left out, representing 0.76% percent of the total number of parishes.  The study uses several datasets to analyze land use and occupation in Portugal. The Land Use and Occupation Map (COS2007v3.0) is a detailed thematic map of land use and occupation for mainland Portugal, developed by the Directorate-General for Territory (DGT). The data is organized hierarchically and includes 83 classes of land use and occupation. The CHELSA database, maintained by the Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow, and Landscape Research (WSL), provides bioclimatic indexes for precipitation and average temperature over various temporal intervals and variables.  The National Institute of Statistics (INE) provides data on agricultural machinery distribution across different geographical locations. The dataset covers the total number of agricultural machines, as well as specific categories such as wheeled and tracked tractors, motor cultivators, power hoes, motor mowers, and combine harvesters. The dataset also examines the distribution of farms with access to irrigation based on geographical location.  The burned land data from 1975 to 2023 provides a comprehensive overview of fire occurrences and their impact over time. This data is crucial for understanding long-term patterns, assessing the effectiveness of fire prevention measures, and informing future land management and policy decisions.  Lastly, the population density dataset from the 2021 Census and the 2011 Census provides a decennial comparison of total population density across different geographical regions. We quantified, for the first time, the potential of mineral soils to sorb additional dissolved organic carbon (DOC) for six soil orders. We compiled 402 laboratory sorption experiments to estimate the additional DOC sorption potential, that is the potential of excess DOC sorption in addition to the existing background level already sorbed in each soil sample. We estimated this potential using gridded climate and soil geochemical variables within a machine learning model. We find that mid- and low-latitude soils and subsoils have a greater capacity to store DOC by sorption compared to high-latitude soils and topsoils. The global additional DOC sorption potential for six soil orders is estimated to be 107 $$ pm$$                   \uffc2\uffb1                  13 Pg C to 1\uffc2\uffa0m depth. Chemical and physical associations of soil carbon with minerals play a critical role in carbon storage, but the amount and global capacity for storage in this form remain unquantified. Here, we produce spatially-resolved global estimates of mineral-associated organic carbon stocks and carbon-storage capacity by analyzing 1144 globally-distributed soil profiles. We show that current stocks total 899 Pg C to a depth of 1\uffe2\uff80\uff89m in non-permafrost mineral soils. Although this constitutes 66% and 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, it is only 42% and 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Regions under agricultural management and deeper soil layers show the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Critically, the degree of undersaturation indicates sequestration efficiency over years to decades. We show that, across 103 carbon-accrual measurements spanning management interventions globally, soils furthest from their mineralogical capacity are more effective at accruing carbon; sequestration rates average 3-times higher in soils at one tenth of their capacity compared to soils at one half of their capacity. Los objetivos de este estudio fueron investigar los efectos de la fertilizaci\u00f3n a largo plazo en el COS y las fracciones de COS para todo el perfil del suelo (0\u2013100 cm) en el noroeste de China. El estudio se inici\u00f3 en 1979 en Gansu, China, e incluy\u00f3 seis tratamientos: control no fertilizado (CK), fertilizante de nitr\u00f3geno (N), fertilizantes de nitr\u00f3geno y f\u00f3sforo (P) (NP), fertilizantes de paja m\u00e1s N y P (NP+S), esti\u00e9rcol de granja (FYM) y esti\u00e9rcol de granja m\u00e1s fertilizantes de N y P (NP+FYM). Los resultados mostraron que la concentraci\u00f3n de COS en la capa de suelo de 0\u201320 cm aument\u00f3 con el tiempo, excepto en los tratamientos con CK y N. La fertilizaci\u00f3n a largo plazo influy\u00f3 significativamente en las concentraciones de COS y el almacenamiento a 60 cm de profundidad. However, there is limited knowledge regarding responses of soil respiration and C-cycle enzyme activities to BC and nitrogen (N) additions in a calcareous soil. A 56-day incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the combined effects of BC addition rates (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.5 and 5.0% by mass) and urea (U) application on soil nutrients, soil respiration and C-cycle enzyme activities in a calcareous soil in the North China Plain. Our results showed soil pH values in both U-only and U plus BC treatments significantly decreased within the first 14 days and then stabilized, and CO2emission rate in all U plus BC soils decreased exponentially, while there was no significant difference in the contents of soil total organic carbon (TOC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total nitrogen (TN), and C/N ratio in each treatment over time. At each incubation time, soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), TOC, TN, C/N ratio, DOC and cumulative CO2 emission significantly increased with increasing BC addition rate, while soil potential activities of the four hydrolytic enzymes increased first and then decreased with increasing BC addition rate, with the largest values in the U + 1.0%BC treatment. However, phenol oxidase activity in all U plus BC soils showed a decreasing trend with the increase of BC addition rate. No segundo, com 15 anos, situado na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Eldorado do Sul (RS), foram avaliados os seguintes tratamentos: o sistema de cultura aveia/milho em preparo convencional sem aduba\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o nitrogenada, o mesmo sistema (aveia/milho) em tr\uffc3\uffaas diferentes sistemas de preparo do solo (convencional, reduzido e plantio direto) e o sistema de cultura aveia + vica/milho + caupi em plantio direto, todos os \uffc3\uffbaltimos quatro tratamentos com aduba\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o nitrogenada (144 kg ha-1 ano-1 ). Neste experimento, foram ainda utilizados, como refer\uffc3\uffaancia, uma \uffc3\uffa1rea de campo natural e um tratamento com elevada adi\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o de res\uffc3\uffadduos (guandu/milho). Inicialmente, os tratamentos foram hierarquizados em ordem crescente de QS, com base nos resultados dispon\uffc3\uffadveis e na experi\uffc3\uffaancia acumulada pelos pesquisadores respons\uffc3\uffa1veis pelos experimentos. Foram analisados os teores de Carbono Org\uffc3\uffa2nico Total (COT) e Nitrog\uffc3\uffaanio total (NT), COT e NT nas fra\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffb5es superiores e inferiores a 53 \uffc2\uffb5m, potencial de mineraliza\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o do C e N do solo e C da biomassa microbiana. Somente as camadas de 0-5 e 0-20 cm foram utilizadas neste trabalho. A QS foi alterada pelos manejos adotados em ambas as \uffc3\uffa1reas experimentais. O COT e NT, avaliados na camada de 0-5 cm, mostraram-se eficientes em discriminarem o impacto de sistemas de manejo sobre a QS, reproduzindo, em ambas as \uffc3\uffa1reas, a ordena\uffc3\uffa7\uffc3\uffa3o proposta. Soil organic carbon (SOC) data were collected from six long-term experiment sites in the upland of northern China. Our analyses indicate that long-term applications of inorganic nitrogen-phosphorus (NP) and nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium (NPK) result in a significant increase in SOC at the sites with the double-cropping systems. The applications of inorganic NP and/or NPK combined with manure lead to a significantly increasing trend in SOC content at all the sites. However, the application of NPK with crop residue incorporation can only increase SOC content in the warm-temperate areas with the double-cropping systems. Regression analyses suggest that soil carbon sequestration responds linearly to carbon input at all the sites. Chemical and physical associations of soil carbon with minerals play a critical role in carbon storage, but the amount and global capacity for storage in this form remain unquantified. Here, we produce spatially-resolved global estimates of mineral-associated organic carbon stocks and carbon-storage capacity by analyzing 1144 globally-distributed soil profiles. We show that current stocks total 899 Pg C to a depth of 1\uffe2\uff80\uff89m in non-permafrost mineral soils. Although this constitutes 66% and 70% of soil carbon in surface and deeper layers, respectively, it is only 42% and 21% of the mineralogical capacity. Regions under agricultural management and deeper soil layers show the largest undersaturation of mineral-associated carbon. Critically, the degree of undersaturation indicates sequestration efficiency over years to decades. We show that, across 103 carbon-accrual measurements spanning management interventions globally, soils furthest from their mineralogical capacity are more effective at accruing carbon; sequestration rates average 3-times higher in soils at one tenth of their capacity compared to soils at one half of their capacity. With the help of mobile proximal soil sensors, the lime-relevant soil parameters pH value, texture and soil organic matter were recorded time-saving, cost-effectively and on a small scale. Regulations for processing the sensor data and deriving fertilization recommendations were developed. An important sub-step in determining the lime requirement is the site-specific calibration of the sensor data in order to obtain high-resolution maps of the lime-relevant soil parameters. For this purpose, soil samples were taken from all mapped plots and analyzed for pH, soil organic carbon and grain size distribution. The analyzed results of the first out of three participating farms in the project are available in this data set. Furthermore, in addition to the analysis of the pH value, a basic soil investigation was carried out determining the plant-availability of phosphorus, potassium and magnesium. To date, the dataset consists of a total of 308 entries for pH, 222 for soil organic carbon, total carbon and total nitrogen content, 274 for P, K and Mg, and 327 for soil texture (clay, fine silt, medium silt, coarse silt, fine sand, medium sand, coarse sand). Samples were taken in May 2019 from the restored land adjacent to the open-cast brown coal mine Inden, NRW Germany (6\u25e615\u20190\u2019E to 6\u25e621\u20190\u2019E and 50\u25e650\u20195\u2019N to 50\u25e653\u20190\u2019N). \nThirteen reclaimed sites of ages 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 13, 18, 24, 29, 40, 44, 48 and 55 years after reclamation were sampled. At each site, soil was sampled from the reclaimed arable field and from the grass margins directly adjacent. Exceptions are for the two youngest sites aged one-two years restored in 2017 and 2018, where no grass margins were present. The 2018 site further differed from other sites in that there were 2 arable land use types; bare soil with no vegetation (2018_F) and land cultivated with Triticale sp instead of Alfalfa (2018_G); and lastly, a site of unlevelled freshly deposited mounds of soil approximately 1m high (2018_FD). \nThe soils from the grass margins were formed from the same loess material as the reclaimed arable fields of the same age, but differed in that they had continuous vegetation cover and were not ploughed. Per field, five technical replicates, each consisting of five pooled soil cores (6 cm \u00d8, with a depth of 10 cm), were collected. At the adjacent grass strips three technical replicates consisting each of two soil cores were sampled. All samples were sieved (2mm), roots and stones removed and stored at 4\u00b0C prior to analysis.\nThe mining company RWE was responsible for the restoration of the land after mining and managed the sites for 7 years before returning the land to the previous owners. The reclamation process is highly standardized. New agricultural top soils are formed of a 2m layer of homogenized loess substrate (containing 1% former topsoil), which are continuously restored at the backside of the mine once excavation is finished.\nIn the first three years after reclamation, fields are cultivated with alfalfa (Medicago sativa) in the absence of fertiliser and biocides.
