Cover crops are a conservation management practice that can provoke changes in soil quality which requires evaluation. Stratification ratios of soil properties such as soil organic C and labile C fractions have been proposed for the assessment of soil quality under different soil management systems. Our objective was to study the effect of different cover crop management on various soil parameters and their stratification ratios. We evaluated three different soil managements in a Typic Haploxerept from NE Spain: conventional tillage (CT); 5￢ﾀﾐy continuous cover crop of resident vegetation (RV); and 4￢ﾀﾐy continuous cover crop of Festuca longifolia Thuill., followed by 1￢ﾀﾐy Bromus catharticus L. after resowing (BV). We monitored soil organic C, particulate organic C, water soluble C, potentially mineralizable N, microbial biomass C, ￎﾲ￢ﾀﾐglucosidase and urease enzymatic activities, and water stable aggregates at 0￢ﾀﾓ2.5, 2.5￢ﾀﾓ5, 5￢ﾀﾓ15, 15￢ﾀﾓ25, and 25￢ﾀﾓ45￢ﾀﾉcm soil depths. We calculated soil depth stratification ratios of those soil properties. Resident cover crop increased microbiological properties, labile C fractions, and aggregation with respect to conventional tillage at 0￢ﾀﾓ2.5 and 2.5￢ﾀﾓ5￢ﾀﾉcm soil depths. However, for Bromus cover crop the same soil properties were lower than for the resident cover crop at 0￢ﾀﾓ2.5￢ﾀﾉcm depth. Stratification ratios of ￎﾲ￢ﾀﾐglucosidase and urease enzymatic activities, and particulate organic C showed a higher sensitivity than other soil properties; therefore, they would be the best indicators for soil quality assessment in semiarid Mediterranean vineyards.

2. Seven soil managements were compared: cork oak forest, pasture under oak trees, open pasture, hay crop under oak trees, open hay crop, grass-covered vineyard and tilled vineyard. Analyses include chemical and spectroscopic (FT-IR) characterization of the humic substances (fulvic acids, humic acids and humin) of the A horizons. Lower amounts of total organic C and humic substances were found in the more disturbed soils such as those of the tilled vineyard, while the other soil managements showed a rather similar pattern for many indices of SOM quality (e.g., HA-C/FA-C, fulvic H/C and humic and fulvic C/N ratios) and for spectroscopic characteristics. These results indicated that the impact of soil management on the humic composition was relatively low for these sub-acid (pH ranging from 5.1 to 6.4) sandy soils under Mediterranean type of climate. The relatively small differences between the forest and the grassland land uses also suggested that the periodical light tillage applied to the grassland did not strongly affect SOM accumulation in the topsoil of this land use. In the oak forest soils, a sharp decrease (–77%) of the organic C from the thin A1 to the A2 horizon was observed, which could constrain the resilience of these soils towards disturbance factors, while the grasslands soils, where the organic C sequestration occurred in a thick horizon, may be more resilient. The compared soil managements revealed to be quite conservative, demonstrating that the traditional agro-silvo-pastoral management practices are effective in maintaining relatively good soil quality traits under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions.
2. Our results showed that microbial communities associated with biodynamic and organic farming systems were very similar, while green manure was the greatest source of soil microbial biodiversity and significantly changed microbial richness and community composition compared with other soils. Green manure also significantly enriched bacterial taxa involved in the soil nitrogen cycle (e.g. Microvirga sp., Pontibacter sp. and Nitrospira sp.).Our results showed that the diversity and composition of the microbial communities associated with biodynamic and organic farming systems were similar, indicating that the use of biodynamic preparations 500 and 501 did not cause any significant detectable changes to the soil microbial community in the short term, while the effects of green manure were significant in soil microbiota. The microbiological richness and structure of soil are used as a sensitive indicator of soil quality. Reasons for different management include water conservation, weed and pest control, biological activity promotion and soil fertility and biodiversity preservation. We studied different soil cover management in 16 paired vineyards located at eight sites in the Leithaberg and Carnuntum regions of eastern Austria. To this end, we compared inter￢ﾀﾐrows with medium intensity (Periodically Mechanically Disturbed) and low intensity (Permanent Green Cover). We investigated the effects of these different management intensities on soil organic carbon, bulk density, saturated and unsaturated hydraulic conductivity, pore size distribution and percolation stability in the upper soil layer from 3 to 8￢ﾀﾉcm. Soil organic carbon and percolation stability were significantly higher and soil bulk density was significantly lower in vineyards with permanent green cover. No significant differences were observed for saturated hydraulic conductivity, pore size distribution and plant available water. This may be attributed to a minor effect as a result of the time lag of up to 2￢ﾀﾉyears since the last tillage. Regression analysis to predict plant￢ﾀﾐavailable water for local vineyard soils also showed that texture, total organic carbon and bulk density were suitable predictor variables. These results suggest that both investigated inter￢ﾀﾐrow management systems support a good soil structure for winegrowers. Organic carbon content and parameters interacting with organic carbon may still be improved with permanent vegetation cover systems; however, the positive effects on plant available water are limited.</p
2. As a contribution to the H2020 collaborative project of the European Union, called Diverfarming, and part of the agroecological experiments during 2018 and 2019, grapevine biomass growth was monitored in connection with carbon storage types in soil and in the deposits removed by soil erosion. Phenometry was carried out interpreting segmented images to follow changes in biomass. It was found that crop growth could be best described by the Richards growth function. The distinction between grapevine and intercrop growth, however, requires further refinement in image analysis. In the laboratory TOC and Ntotal were measured for both the soil and the plant organs as well as for the eroded sediments. Greenhouse gas emissions and photosynthesis were monitored. Looking at the change of Leaf Area Index (LAI) over the growing period, image analysis pointed out the role of cut shoots from pruning in the C and N cycles. Maximum leaf area (at ripening) for guyot cultivation technique was extimated at 7,840 m2 ha-1. Soil loss by erosion was established by sediment traps at the end of vinestock rows. The grain size distribution analysis led to the remarkable result that as erosion proceeded, the ratio of the sand fraction increased but remained within the range for the textural class of loam. Organic matter contents grew to 38 g kg-1. The rate of soil erosion is higher in ploughed than in grassed interrows by orders of magnitude.

2. This study focuses on estimating the evapotranspiration and crop coefficients of table grapes vineyards trained on overhead ￢ﾀﾜtendone￢ﾀﾝ systems in the Apulia region (Italy). Maximum vineyard transpiration was estimated by adopting the ￢ﾀﾜdirect￢ﾀﾝ methodology for ETp proposed by the Food and Agriculture Organization in Irrigation and Drainage Paper No. 56, with crop parameters estimated from Landsat 8 and RapidEye satellite data in combination with ground-based meteorological data. The modeling results of two growing seasons (2013 and 2014) indicated that canopy growth, seasonal and 10-day sums evapotranspiration values were strictly related to thermal requirements and rainfall events. The estimated values of mean seasonal daily evapotranspiration ranged between 4.2 and 4.1 mmￂﾷd￢ﾈﾒ1, while midseason estimated values of crop coefficients ranged from 0.88 to 0.93 in 2013, and 1.02 to 1.04 in 2014, respectively. The experimental evapotranspiration values calculated represent the maximum value in absence of stress, so the resulting crop coefficients should be used with some caution. It is concluded that the retrieval of crop parameters and evapotranspiration derived from remotely-sensed data could be helpful for downscaling to the field the local weather conditions and agronomic practices and thus may be the basis for supporting grape growers and irrigation managers.

Landsat 8", "2. Twenty-three treatments were applied. Eight cover crop species that received the same amount of fertilizer were controlled chemically at the end of August or at the end of November. Two treatments were also applied in which Avena sativa L. v. Saia (‘Saia’ oats) and Vicia dasycarpa Ten. (grazing vetch) were controlled mechanically during bud break. In addition to these eighteen treatments, two fertiliser application rates were applied to ‘Saia’ oats and grazing vetch. A mechanically cultivated control in which no cover crop was sown was included in the trial. Secale cereale L v. Henog and Ornithopus sativus L. v. Emena produced, on average, the highest amount of dry matter at the end of August (3.29 t/ha and 3.06 t/ha, respectively) after receiving on average 278 mm of water, of which 172 mm was supplied by means of a micro-sprinkler irrigation system. The average dry matter produced by Medicago truncatula Gaertn. v. Paraggio and ‘Saia’ oats at the end of August was not significantly lower than that of the firstmentioned two species. Under conditions of this experiment, it seemed that P and K at a concentration of 10 mg/kg and 78 mg/kg, respectively, in the top 300 mm soil layer supplied the needs of grazing vetch. Saia oats performed poorly unless 30 kg P, 30 kg K and 42 kg N were applied during establishment and the early growing phase. All the species, except M. truncatula Gaertn v. Parabinga, produced additional fibre from September to the end of November following a dry winter (rain and irrigation totaling 201 mm), while none produced additional fibre if the water supply was luxurious up to the end of August (rain and irrigation totaling 364 mm). The cover crops did not produce enough seeds to re-establish successfully over a period of five years. It will, however, be possible to reduce the seeding density of grazing vetch (40% after two seasons) and the two M. truncatula varieties (20% after five seasons) if the species were left to ripen their seeds.
2. Soil water monitoring in agriculturally dominated catchments can help in developing soil water retention measurements, for assessment of land use change, or adaptation of specific land management systems to climate change. The present study was carried out in the Pannonian region (Upper-Balaton, Hungary) on Cambisols and Calcisols between 2015 and 2021. Soil water content (SWC) dynamics were investigated under different land use types (vineyard, grassland, and forest) at three depths (15, 40, and 70 cm). The meteorological data show a continuous decrease in cumulative precipitation over time during the study with an average of 26% decrease observed between 2016 and 2020, while average air temperatures were similar for all the studied years. Corresponding to the lower precipitation amounts, a clear decrease in the average SWC was observed at all the land use sites, with 13.4%, 37.7%, and 29.3% lower average SWC for the grassland, forest, and vineyard sites, respectively, from 2016 to 2020 (measured at the 15 cm depth of the soil). Significant differences in SWC were observed between the annual and seasonal numbers within a given land use (p < 0.05). The lowest average SWC was observed at the grassland (11.7%) and the highest at the vineyard (28.3%). The data showed an increasing average soil temperature, with an average 6.3% higher value in 2020 compared to 2016. The grassland showed the highest (11.3 ￂﾰC) and the forest soil the lowest (9.7 ￂﾰC) average soil temperatures during the monitoring period. The grassland had the highest number of days with the SWC below the wilting point, while the forest had the highest number of days with the SWC optimal for the plants.</p
2. Soils on Crete are under imminent threat of desertification, characterized by loss of vegetation, water erosion, and subsequently, loss of soil. Several large-scale studies have estimated average soil erosion on the island between 6 and 8 Mg/ha/year, but more localized investigations assess soil losses one order of magnitude higher. An experiment initiated in 2017, under the framework of the SoilCare H2020 EU project, aimed to evaluate the effect of different management practices on the soil erosion. The experiment was set up in control versus treatment experimental design including different sets of treatments, targeting the most important cultivations on Crete (olive orchards, vineyards, fruit orchards). The minimum-to-no tillage practice was adopted as an erosion mitigation practice for the olive orchard study site, while for the vineyard site, the cover crop practice was used. For the fruit orchard field, the crop-type change procedure (orange to avocado) was used. The experiment demonstrated that soil-improving cropping techniques have an important impact on soil erosion, and as a result, on soil water conservation that is of primary importance, especially for the Mediterranean dry regions. The demonstration of the findings is of practical use to most stakeholders, especially those that live and work with the local land.

ISLAND", "Environmental Studies", "Environmental Sciences & Ecology", "VINEYARDS", "soil-improving crop systems", "COVER CROPS", "3301 Architecture", "PARAMETERS", "4104 Environmental management", "EQUATION", "RUNOFF", "0502 Environmental Science and Management", "sustainable land management", "2. Microbial biomass and enzyme activity were compared in vineyard soils managed by organic and conventional practices under Mediterranean conditions during the growing. Organic treatments were (i) green manure and farmyard manure at the rate of 30 t ha-1 (GM1), (ii) green manure and farmyard manure at the rate of 10 t ha-1, plus E2001 EM Bio-polymer gel solution (GM2), and (iii) green manure plus E2001 EM Bio-polymer gel solution (GM3). Only mineral fertilizers and pesticides were used in the conventional system (CONV). Soil organic C and soil microbial biomass C (SMBC), and protease, urease, alkaline phosphatase, and dehydrogenase activity were significantly higher in the organic system than in the conventional system. The ratio of microbial biomass C to total organic C content (Cmic/Corg) was also higher in the organic plots. Total organic C content increased in the organic system by 13%-23% in comparison to the conventional system. Application of GM1 and GM2 resulted in greater microbial biomass and activity, as compared to the other management systems. SMBC was significantly correlated with dehydrogenase, protease, urease, and alkaline phosphatase. These results indicate that organic management positively affected biochemical properties, thus improving soil quality and productivity.
2. Zero hunger", "microbial biomass", "13. Previous studies showed that cover crops can increase soil organic carbon (SOC) in Mediterranean vineyards. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the influence of two different cover crops in the short term on soil C sequestration in a semiarid vineyard and to study the potential use of both ￎﾲ￢ﾀﾓglucosidase enzimatic activity (GLU) and the GLU/SOC ratio in order to assess the SOC increase. The experiment was carried out in a cv. Tempranillo (Vitis vinifera L.) vineyard on a Oxyaquic Xerorthent soil in Rioja winegrowing region (NE, Spain). The experimental design was established in 2009 with three treatments: conventional tillage; sown barley cover crop (Hordeum vulgare, L.); sown Persian clover cover crop (Trifolium resupinatum L.). Carbon in the aboveground biomass with each cover crop was monitored. Soil was sampled in June 2011 and June 2012, and SOC, GLU and the GLU/SOC ratio were determined. After 3 years both cover crops increased SOC at soil surface with C sequestration rates of 0.47 and 1.19 t C ha-1 yr-1 for BV and CV respectively. GLU and GLU/SOC ratio increased in both cover crops at 0-5 cm soil depth. The C sequestration rates and GLU were related to the cover crops aboveground biomass. In consequence, in semiarid vineyards under cover crops GLU could be an appropriate indicator to asses the increase of SOC and the soil quality improvement in the short-term (2-3 years).

2. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two liming materials, i.e. dolomitic lime and sugar foam, on a vineyard cultivated in an acid soil. The effects were studied in two soil layers (0-30 and 30-60 cm), as well as on leaf nutrient contents, must quality properties and grape yield, in an agricultural soil dedicated to Vitis vinifera L. cv. ￢ﾀﾘMencￃﾭa￢ﾀﾙ cultivation. Data management and analysis were performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA). As liming material, sugar foam was more efficient than dolomitic limestone because sugar foam promoted the highest decrease in soil acidity properties at the same calcium carbonate equivalent dose. However, potassium contents in vines organs, including leaves and berries, seemed to decrease as a consequence of liming, with a concomitant increase in must total acidity. Soil available phosphorus also decreased as a consequence of liming, especially with sugar foam, though no effects were observed in plants. For these reasons fertilization of this soil with K and P is recommended along with liming. Grape yields in limed soils increased, although non-significantly, by 30%. This research has therefore provided an important opportunity to advance in our understanding of the effects of liming on grape quality and production in acid soils.

2. Management can improve soil properties and thus soil fertility. In European wine￢ﾀﾐgrowing regions, a broad range of inter￢ﾀﾐrow management strategies evolved based on specific local site conditions and the varying effects of management intensities on soil, water balance, yield and grape quality. Accordingly, there is a need to investigate the effects of locally common cover crop management strategies and tillage intensity on soil organic carbon content and soil physical parameters. In this study, we investigated the impact of the most common inter￢ﾀﾐrow management practices in Austria, France, Romania and Spain. In all countries, we compared paired sites. Each site with cover crops and inter￢ﾀﾐrow management of low intensity was compared with one site with (temporarily) bare soil and high management intensity. All studied sites with cover crops and low management intensity, except those in Spain, had higher organic carbon contents than the paired more intensively managed vineyards. However, the highly water￢ﾀﾐlimited Spanish vineyards with temporary cover crops had lower organic carbon contents than the paired sites with bare soil. Sites with more organic carbon had better results for bulk density, percolation stability (PS), hydraulic conductivity and available soil water, with soil hydraulic parameters being less pronounced than others. Country comparison of inter￢ﾀﾐrow weed control systems showed that PS was particularly low in sampled vineyards in Romania and Spain, where weed control is based on intensive mechanical tillage. Alternating management systems with tillage every second inter￢ﾀﾐrow showed a decrease in soil structure compared with permanent green cover. Thus, inter￢ﾀﾐrow management with cover crops and reduced tillage increases soil organic carbon content and improves soil structure compared with bare soil management. If local constraints, such as water scarcity, do not allow year￢ﾀﾐround planting, alternating inter￢ﾀﾐrow management with several years of alternating periods may be an option to mitigate those adverse effects. However, negative impact on the soil structure occurs with the very first tillage operation, whereas negative effects on the carbon balance only appear after long￢ﾀﾐterm use of tillage.</p
[SDE.BE] Environmental Sciences/Biodiversity and Ecology", "Vineyard soil quality", "Inter-row management", "Management intensity", "550", "Soil organic carbon", "Soil physical properties", "Soil cover", "Alternating management", "[SDE.BE]Environmental Sciences/Biodiversity and Ecology", "630", "Tillage
https://doi.org/10261/393503
related
https://repository.soilwise-he.eu/cat/collections/metadata:main/items/European%20Journal%20of%20Soil%20Science
Evaluation of soil erosion risk and identification of soil cover and management factor (C) for RUSLE in European vineyards with different soil management
Vineyards show some of the largest erosion rates reported in agricultural areas in Europe. Reported rates vary considerably under the same land use, since erosion processes are highly affected by climate, soil, topography and by the adopted soil management practices. Literature also shows differences in the effect of same conservation practices on reducing soil erosion from conventional, bare soil based, management. The Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) is commonly adopted to estimate rates of water erosion on cropland under different forms of land use and management, but it requires proper value of soil cover and management (C) factors in order to obtain a reliable evaluation of local soil erosion rates. In this study the ORUSCAL (Orchard RUSle CALibration) is used to identify the best calibration strategy against long-term experimental data. Afterwards, ORUSCAL is used in order to apply the RUSLE technology from farm based information across different European wine-growing regions. The results suggest that the best strategy for calibration should incorporate the soil moisture sub-factor (Sm) to provide better soil loss predictions. The C factor, whose average values ranged from 0.012 to 0.597, presented a large spatial variability due to coupling with local climate and specific local management. The comparison across the five wine-growing regions indicates that for the soil protection management, permanent cover crop is the best measure for accomplishing sustainable erosion rates across the studied areas. Alternate and temporary cover crops, that are used in areas of limited water resources to prevent competition with vines, failed to achieve sustainable erosion rates, that still need to be addressed. This raises the need for a careful use of C values developed under different environmental conditions.

ISLAND", "Environmental Studies", "Environmental Sciences & Ecology", "VINEYARDS", "soil-improving crop systems", "COVER CROPS", "3301 Architecture", "PARAMETERS", "soil erosion; soil-improving crop systems; sustainable land management; sustainable agriculture", "4104 Environmental management", "EQUATION", "RUNOFF", "0502 Environmental Science and Management", "sustainable land management", "2.
