Five irrigation treatments were imposed: fully irrigated treatment (FIT), 25 % FIT, 50 % FIT, 75 % FIT, rainfed and an over-irrigation treatment (125 % FIT). There was no significant (P > 0.05) difference between irrigation frequencies regarding the maximum grain yield; however, at lower deficit irrigation regime, medium irrigation frequency resulted in lower grain yield. There was a decrease in grain yield with the 125 % FIT as compared to the FIT, which had statistically similar yield as 75 % FIT. Irrigation rate significantly impacted grain yield in 2005, 2006 and 2007, while irrigation frequency was only significant during the 2005 and 2006 growing seasons (two dry years) and the interacting effect was only significant in the driest year of 2005 (P = 0.006). For the pooled data from 2005 to 2008, irrigation rate was significant (P = 0.001) and irrigation frequency was also significant (P = 0.015), but their interaction was not significant (P = 0.207). Overall, there were no significant differences between irrigation frequencies in terms of grain yield. Ky had interannual variation and average seasonal Ky values were 1.65, 0.91, 0.91 and 0.83 in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008, respectively, and the pooled data (2005–2008) Ky value were 1.14.
2. It is unknown whether innovated farming systems can alleviate this issue. Here, we carried out field experiments in arid northwest China from 2009 to 2012 to determine the response of water use, grain yield, and water use efficiency. We integrated crop intensification via relay-planting and straw mulching in the same system. Straw mulching included stubble standing, straw covering, or straw incorporation to the soil. Results show that wheat and maize relay-planting with straw mulching increased yields by up to 153 % versus mono-planting of maize and wheat. Straw covering approached the highest yield. Relay-planting with stubble standing or straw covering decreased water consumption by 4.6 %. Impacts can be determined by assessing soil hydraulic properties and crop characteristics. In this study, three tillage practices were investigated with respect to vertical soil water distribution and development of soybean. A specific focus was set on determining evaporation and transpiration as fractions of evapotranspiration to obtain additional information on water availability and crop water use. The agricultural practices included conventional tillage, reduced tillage (no plow), and no-tillage. The study site was a long-term field experiment under rainfed conditions. The investigations covered a vegetation period of soybean. The measurements comprised weather and soil water monitoring using sensors and manual monitoring of crop development. Evapotranspiration and its components were determined using scintillometer measurements and an isotope-based water balance technique. In the researched vegetation period with limited water availability, the conservative tillage practices showed better water storage, water use, and crop yields compared to the conventional practice. The weekly evaporation and transpiration rates progressed according to the respective canopy development. Thus, delayed plant development of the no-till practice led to extended green cover and productive water use during the late season, where a large part of the precipitation has fallen. The tillage-induced differences of soil hydraulic properties had a substantial impact on soil water distribution, but a comparatively small impact on the soil surface wetness and thus directly on the evaporation rate. The tillage-induced impacts on soil cover by plant residues, however, showed the substantial reduction effect of plant residue cover on evaporation losses. Hence, assessment of evaporation and transpiration rates contributes to the understanding of differences in water productivity and promotes the efficient use of the available water resources.
2. Field experiments were conducted between 2007 and 2009 to evaluate the effects of conservation tillage on the yields and crop water use efficiency of maize ( Zea mays L.) and cowpea ( Vigna unguiculata L.) in eastern Kenya. Experimental treatments were a combination of three tillage practices and four cropping systems. Tillage practices were tied-ridges, subsoiling-ripping and ox-ploughing. The cropping systems were single crop maize, single crop cowpea, intercropped maize–cowpea and single crop maize with manure. The treatments were arranged in split plots with tillage practices as the main plots and cropping systems as the sub-plots in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD). The results showed that tied-ridge tillage had the greatest plant available water content while subsoiling-ripping tillage had the least in all seasons. Averaged across seasons and cropping season, tillage did not have a significant effects on maize grain yield but it did have a significant effect on crop grain and dry matter water use efficiency (WUE). Nevertheless, maize grain yields and WUE values were generally greater under tied-ridge tillage than under subsoiling-ripping and ox-plough tillages. The yields and WUE of cowpea under subsoiling-ripping tillage were less than those of ox-plough tillage. When averaged across the seasons and tillage systems, the cropping system with the manure treatment increased ( P ≤ 0.05) maize grain yield, grain WUE and dry matter WUE by 36%, 30%, 26% respectively, compared to treatments without manure. Plant water deficit index (PWDI) represents the extent of water stress by relating soil moisture to the ability of a plant to take up water including consideration of the relative distribution of soil water to roots. However, for a smart irrigation decision support system, we are challenged in determining reliable thresholds of PWDI to initiate irrigation events to achieve predetermined yield and/or water use efficiency (WUE) targets. Taking drip irrigated maize and sprinkler irrigated alfalfa as examples, field experiments were conducted to investigate the choice and effects of PWDI thresholds. The results indicated that, with increasing PWDI thresholds, irrigation times and quantity of water, as well as crop transpiration, growth, and yield, were all significantly limited while WUE was enhanced except under extremely stressed conditions. To disconnect the unpredictable effects of other factors, yield and WUE were normalized to their corresponding potential values. Within the experimentally determined range of PWDI, relative yield and WUE were described with linear functions for maize, and linear and quadratic functions for alfalfa, allowing identification of the most efficient threshold value according to the objective parameter of choice. The method described can be adopted in smart irrigation decision support systems with consideration of spatial variability and after further verification and improvement under more complicated situations with various crop types and varieties, environmental conditions, cultivation modes, and wider or dynamic PWDI thresholds allowing regulated deficit irrigation. It remains
unclear whether drought priming at the early growth stage can be employed to alleviate drought stress during
the post-anthesis drought period and improve water productivity (WP) in cowpea. Therefore, the physiological
responses and WP as affected by drought priming were investigated. Two cowpea varieties (tolerant (V1) and
sensitive (V2) to drought stress) were submitted to drought priming followed by water recovery and then subjected to subsequent drought stresses (80%, 60% and 40% of soil water holding capacity (SWHC)). The results showed that cowpea pre-exposed to drought priming acquired a stress imprint that alleviated the subsequent drought stress which occurred during the later growth stage as exemplified by the improvement of water status, photosynthesis, water productivity of biomass (WPb) and yield (WPy) as well as the modulation of plant hormones. Under the drought stress during the post-anthesis period, primed plants maintained lower [ABA]leaf and higher [IAA]leaf than plants without priming due to better plant water status for drought-primed plants. The results revealed that drought priming could modulate against [ABA]leaf increase under drought, as elevated [ABA]leaf was the main reason for stomatal limitation, thereby decreasing photosynthesis and leading to great yield loss. Primed plants consumed 32% and 24% less water for V1 and V2, respectively, which significantly increased WP while decreased intrinsic water use efficiency (WUEi) of drought-primed plants. It is suggested that drought priming during the early growth period can be used as a promising strategy to save water use for irrigation while improving WP of crops in the regions where water is scarce.
2. In a drip-irrigated vineyard soil evaporation (E) can reach up to 30-40% of the seasonal grapevine crop evapotranspiration (ETc). Vineyard soil management can be used as a technique to reduce soil E for improving crop water use efficiency. The aim of this experiment was to analyze the effect of using pruning waste as an organic mulching on vineyard ETc. During three experimental seasons, several cycles of grapevines water use determinations were conducted using a large weighing lysimeter located in Albacete (southeast Spain) under drip irrigation. Measurements were carried out under different soil management practices: i) keeping the bare soil within the lysimeter during the first 2-3 days (bare soil), ii) covering the lysimeter soil surface with pruning waste as an organic mulching (about 5 cm thick) for the next 2-3 days (organic mulch), and iii) covering the lysimeter with a waterproof canvas (plastic mulch), similar in colour to the soil, for the last 2-3 days of each measurement cycle. In 2017, the measurements period was initiated when midday stem water potential (Ψstem) values reached -1.3 MPa, in order to study the effect of the different soil management on grapevine ETc when vines in the lysimeter were suffering from severe water stress. During the 3-year study, plant determinations (i.e., canopy cover and the phenological stage) showed that vines were at the same stage of development during each period of measurements. Under equal evaporative demand and fractional canopy cover, results showed a reduction in the vineyard ETc between 16-18% with the organic mulching, and up to 24-30% with the plastic mulching. Even though plastic mulches significantly reduced water evaporation from soil surface, this reduction could have resulted in an increase in crop transpiration (T). However, results in this experiment show that both organic and inorganic mulching did not increase vine T compared to no mulching conditions, based on vine T values estimated during the three experimental periods of 2015. Therefore, using pruning waste as an organic mulch could be an environmental friendly alternative to reduce soil evaporation and increase crop water productivity in large areas where vineyards are drip-irrigated. In this experiment, the growth and physiological responses of two barley genotypes, wild type barley Steptoe (WT) and its correspondent ABA-deficient mutant barley Az34, to three N-fertigation regimes at ambient CO2 (a[CO2]) (400 ppm) and e [CO2] (800 ppm) were investigated. From tillering to grain filling stage, the plants were subjected to three Nfertigation regimes: 1) N-fertigation at full irrigation volume (FIN); 2) N-fertigation at reduced irrigation volume (DIN); 3) alternate N-fertigation at reduced irrigation volume (PRDN). Although e[CO2] had little effect on gs, Tr and plant water use of WT, especially under DIN and PRDN, it increased An, resulting in an increased WUE at stomatal, leaf and whole plant levels. For Az34, the positive effect of e[CO2] on WUE was attributed to both significantly enhanced An and lowered gs and Tr. For both genotypes, e[CO2] increased 100-grain weight and shoot dry biomass but didn’t affect grain yield and WUE for grain production (WUEg). PRDN increased grain yield, HI and WUEg of both genotypes regardless of [CO2], compared to FIN. DIN and PRDN increased N uptake of both genotypes at e[CO2] compared to FIN. Compared to a[CO2], e[CO2] increased 15N uptake and 15N recovery rate of both genotypes by enhancing plant biomass. In addition, both genotypes grown under DIN and PRDN allocated more N to the grain compared to the FIN plants. Collectively, N-fertigation at reduced irrigation volume promoted N allocation to the grain and increased WUE, particularly under e[CO2]. Inconsistent data of the effect of rootstocks over gas-exchange can be found in literature, being necessary an integrative analysis of the effect of grafting over photosynthetic parameters. With this aim, we present a compilation of the effect of graft on the net CO2 assimilation rate (AN) and other photosynthetic parameters across different species with agronomic interest. No differences were observed in any photosynthetic parameter between non-grafted and self-grafted plants under non-stress conditions. However, differences were found depending on the used rootstock, particularly for the intrinsic water-use efficiency (WUEi). We observed that variations in AN induced by rootstocks were related to changes in both diffusive and biochemical parameters. Under drought or salt stress, different photosynthetic performances were observed depending on the rootstock, although the high variability among studies promted to remarkable results. Overall, we observed that grafting can be a useful technique to improve plant photosynthetic performance, and therefore, crop yield and WUE, and that the rootstock selection for a target environment is determinant for the variations in photosynthesis.
Crops", " Agricultural", "0106 biological sciences", "0301 basic medicine", "2. Here we show that terrestrial carbon uptake (i.e. gross primary production) increased significantly from 1982 to 2011 using a combination of ground-based and remotely sensed land and atmospheric observations. Importantly, we find that the terrestrial carbon uptake increase is not accompanied by a proportional increase in water use (i.e. evapotranspiration) but is largely (about 90%) driven by increased carbon uptake per unit of water use, i.e. water use efficiency. The increased water use efficiency is positively related to rising CO2 concentration and increased canopy leaf area index, and negatively influenced by increased vapour pressure deficits. Our findings suggest that rising atmospheric CO2 concentration has caused a shift in terrestrial water economics of carbon uptake.

Atmospheric sciences", "GLOBAL-SCALE", "Climate Change and Variability Research", "02 engineering and technology", "7. Two experiments used peat monoliths with intact bog vegetation in containers, with one experiment outdoors and the other in a greenhouse. A third experiment involved monocultures and mixtures of Sphagnum magellanicum and Eriophorum angustifolium in containers in the same greenhouse. To determine water use of the bog vegetation in July￢ﾀﾓAugust for each experiment and each year we measured water inputs and outputs from the containers. We studied the effects of elevated CO2 and N supply on evapotranspiration in relation to vascular plant biomass and exposure of the moss surface (measured as height of the moss surface relative to the container edge).

Elevated CO2 reduced water use of the bog vegetation in all three experiments, but the CO2 effect on evapotranspiration interacted with vascular plant biomass and exposure of the moss surface. Evapotranspiration in the outdoor experiment was largely determined by evaporation from the Sphagnum moss surface (as affected by exposure to wind) and less so by vascular plant transpiration. Nevertheless, elevated CO2 significantly reduced evapotranspiration by 9￢ﾀﾓ10% in the outdoor experiment.

Vascular plants reduced evapotranspiration in the outdoor experiment, but increased water use in the greenhouse experiments. The relation between vascular plant abundance and evapotranspiration appears to depend on wind conditions; suggesting that vascular plants reduce water losses mainly by reducing wind speed at the moss surface.

Sphagnum growth is very sensitive to changes in water level; low water availability can have deleterious effects.
0106 biological sciences", "2. Knowledge of crop water requirements and the effects of management practices on the amounts of water used for crop transpiration and that lost through soil evaporation is essential for efficient agricultural water management. Therefore, this study investigated the temporal evolution of weekly evaporation and transpiration rates under varying soil water conditions in a conventionally managed soybean field by partitioning evapotranspiration based on a water and δ18O-stable isotope mass balance. The estimated rates were considered in combination with vertical soil water distribution, atmospheric demand (based on crop evapotranspiration), actual evapotranspiration, and the plant development stage. This allowed for the weekly rates to be compared to the current conditions resulting from dry periods, rain or irrigation events, and the extent of the canopy. The range of weekly transpiration/evapotranspiration, from blossom to maturation, was between 0.60 (±0.11) and 0.82 (±0.10). Within this range, transpiration/evapotranspiration shifted depending on the vertical soil water distribution and meteorological conditions. During dry soil surface periods, evaporation dropped to almost zero, whereas a wet surface layer substantially increased evaporation/evapotranspiration, even under a closed canopy. Under given conditions, the application of a few intense irrigations before the drying of the soil surface is recommended. A study was performed with plants of R￢ﾀﾐ110 subjected to water withholding followed by re￢ﾀﾐwatering. The goal was to analyze how stomatal conductance (gs) is regulated with respect to different physiological variables under water stress and recovery, as well as how water stress affects adjustments of water use efficiency (WUE) at the leaf level. Water stress induced a substantial stomatal closure and an increase in WUE, which persisted many days after re￢ﾀﾐwatering. The gs during water stress was mainly related to the content of ABA in the xylem and partly related to plant hydraulic conductivity but not to leaf water potential. By contrast, low gs during re￢ﾀﾐwatering did not correlate with ABA contents and was only related to a sustained decreased hydraulic conductivity. In addition to a complex physiological regulation of stomatal closure, gs and rate of transpiration (E) were strongly affected by leaf￢ﾀﾐto￢ﾀﾐair vapor pressure deficit (VPD) in a way dependent of the treatment. Interestingly, E increased with increasing VPD in control plants, but decreased with increasing VPD in severely stressed plants. All together, the fine stomatal regulation in R￢ﾀﾐ110 resulted in very high WUE at the leaf level. Little is known of how forests respond to the interaction of these climate factors and if their responses depend on soil conditions. In a 3￢ﾀﾐyear lysimeter experiment, we investigated the growth response of young mixed oak stands, on either acidic or calcareous soil, to soil water regime, air￢ﾀﾐwarming and drought treatments corresponding to an intermediate climate change scenario. The air￢ﾀﾐwarming and drought treatments were applied separately as well as in combination. The air￢ﾀﾐwarming treatment had no effect on soil water availability, evapotranspiration or stand biomass. Decreased evapotranspiration from the drought￢ﾀﾐexposed stands led to significantly higher air and soil temperatures, which were attributed to impaired transpirational cooling. Water limitation significantly reduced the stand foliage, shoot and root biomass as droughts were severe, as shown in low leaf water potentials. Additional air warming did not enhance the drought effects on evapotranspiration and biomass, although more negative leaf water potentials were observed. After re￢ﾀﾐwatering, evapotranspiration increased within a few days to pre￢ﾀﾐdrought levels. Stands not subjected to the drought treatment produced significantly less biomass on the calcareous soil than on the acidic soil, probably due to P or Mn limitation. There was no difference in biomass and water regime between the two soils under drought conditions, indicating that nutrient availability was governed by water availability under these conditions. The results demonstrate that young oak stands can cope with severe drought and therefore can be considered for future forestry.

0301 basic medicine", "0106 biological sciences", "Hot Temperature", "Global Warming", "01 natural sciences", "Trees", "03 medical and health sciences", "Quercus", "Soil", "Stress", " Physiological", "Root: shoot ratio", "Soil temperature", "Biomass", "Ecosystem", "Manganese", "Evapotranspiration", "Air", "Water use efficiency", "Water", "Phosphorus", "Plant Transpiration", "04 agricultural and veterinary sciences", "15. Most irrigation water comes from groundwater. Persistent drought and increased competition for water resources threaten long-term viability of groundwater resources, which motivated our research to develop strategies to increase water productivity without noticeable reduction in maize yield. Results from previous research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) experiment stations in 2005 and 2006 found that it was possible to substantially reduce irrigation amounts and increase irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE) and crop water use efficiency (CWUE) (or crop water productivity) with little or no reduction in yield using an irrigation regime that applies less water during growth stages that are less sensitive to water stress. Our hypothesis was that a soil moisture-based irrigation management approach in research fields would give similar results in large production-scale, center-pivot irrigated fields in Nebraska. To test this hypothesis, IWUE, CWUE, and grain yields were compared in extensive on-farm research located at eight locations over two years (16 site-years), representing more than 600 ha of irrigated maize area. In each site-year, two contiguous center-pivot irrigated maize fields with similar topography, soil properties, and crop management practices received different irrigation regimes: one was managed by UNL researchers, and the other was managed by the farmer at each site. Irrigation management in farmer-managed fields relied on the farmers’ traditional visual observations and personal expertise, whereas irrigation timing in the UNL-managed fields was based on pre-determined soil water depletion thresholds measured using soil moisture sensors, as well as crop phenology predicted by a crop simulation model using a combination of real-time (in-season) and historical weather data. The soil moisture-based irrigation regime resulted in greater soil water depletion, which decreased irrigation requirements and enabled more timely irrigation management in the UNL-managed fields in both years (34% and 32% less irrigation application compared with farmer-managed fields in 2007 and 2008, respectively). The average actual crop evapotranspiration (ETC) for the UNL- and farmer-managed fields for all sites in 2007 was 487 and 504 mm, respectively. In 2008, the average UNL and average farmer-managed field had seasonal ETC of 511 and 548 mm, respectively. Thus, when the average of all sites is considered, the UNL-managed fields had 3% and 7% less ETC than the farmer-managed fields in 2007 and 2008, respectively, although the percentage was much higher for some of the farmer-managed fields. In both years, differences in grain yield between the UNL and farmer-managed fields were not statistically significant (p = 0.75). On-farm implementation of irrigation management strategies resulted in a 38% and 30% increase in IWUE in the UNL-managed fields in 2007 and 2008, respectively. On average, the CWUE value for the UNL-managed fields was 4% higher than those in the farmer-managed fields in both years. Reduction in irrigation water withdrawal in UNL-managed fields resulted in $32.00 to $74.10 ha-1 in 2007 and $44.46 to $66.50 ha-1 in 2008 in energy saving and additional net return to the farm income. The results from this study can have significant positive implications in future irrigation management of irrigated maize systems in regions with similar soil and crop management practices.
Civil and Environmental Engineering", "0106 biological sciences", "571", "Environmental Engineering", "550", "Other Civil and Environmental Engineering", "2204 Biomedical Engineering", "1107 Forestry", "01 natural sciences", "630", "Engineering", "1102 Agronomy and Crop Science", "1106 Food Science", "1111 Soil Science", "2. With uncertainty in future irrigation water availability and regulations on nutrient application amounts, experimentally determined effects of “controllable” management strategies such as nitrogen (N), water, and their combination on crop water productivity (CWP, also known as crop water use efficiency) and actual evapotranspiration (ET a ) are essential. The effects of various N application rates (0, 84, 140, 196, and 252 kg ha -1 ) under fully irrigated (FIT), limited irrigation (75% FIT), and rainfed conditions on maize (Zea mays L.) yield and various CWP indices were investigated in 2011 and 2012 growing seasons under linear-move sprinkler irrigation in south central Nebraska. CWP was presented as crop water use efficiency (CWUE), irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), and evapotranspiration water use efficiency (ETWUE). The seasonal rainfall amounts in 2011 and 2012 were 371 mm and 296 mm, respectively, as compared with the long-term average of 469 mm. Two experimental seasons were contrasted with extreme warmer temperatures, greater solar radiation, and lower rainfall in 2012. Maximum grain yield of 12.68 metric tons ha -1 and 14.42 tons ha -1 was observed in 2011 and 2012, respectively, under the fully irrigated and 252 kg N ha -1 treatment. Grain yield was linearly related to ET a and curvilinearly related to N and irrigation application amounts. Lower N treatments were more susceptible to interannual effects on the grain yield response to irrigation water amount. CWUE ranged from 1.52 kg m -3 (FIT and 84 kg N ha -1 ) to 2.58 kg m -3 (rainfed and 196 kg N ha -1 ) with an average of 2.15 kg m -3 in 2011, and from 1.49 kg m -3 (FIT and 0 kg N ha -1 ) to 2.72 kg m -3 (rainfed and 252 kg N ha -1 ) with an average of 2.33 kg m -3 in 2012. CWUE had a positive quadratic relationship with N application amount and decreased with both the presence and amount of irrigation at a given N application amount. The maximum IWUE for 75% FIT and FIT in 2011 was 1.80 kg m -3 (252 kg N ha -1 ) and 1.51 kg m -3 (252 kg N ha -1 ), respectively, whereas in 2012 the maximum IWUE values were 1.40 kg m -3 (196 kg N ha -1 ) and 1.78 kg m -3 (252 kg N ha -1 ), respectively. A curvilinear relationship was observed between IWUE and N application amount. An optimal N application amount of 196 kg ha -1 was identified for the pooled data to maximize the increase in grain yield above rainfed conditions per unit of applied irrigation water under limited irrigation management practices. In 2011, ETWUE ranged from 0.22 kg m -3 (140 kg N ha -1 ) to 1.46 kg m -3 (196 kg N ha -1 ) and from -0.21 kg m -3 (84 kg N ha -1 ) to 3.74 kg m -3 (252 kg N ha -1 ) for 75% FIT and FIT, respectively, whereas in 2012 ETWUE ranged from -0.07 kg m -3 (0 kg N ha -1 ) to 1.87 kg m -3 (252 kg N ha -1 ) and from -0.14 kg m -3 (0 kg N ha -1 ) to 3.65 kg m -3 (196 kg N ha -1 ) for 75% FIT and FIT, respectively. The results support that there is an optimal N level for each irrigation regime and, in general, lower N application amounts are required to reach maximum productivity (e.g., CWUE) under limited and rainfed conditions as compared with the FIT. In other words, there is an optimal N application amount to maximize the effectiveness of irrigation water on increasing grain yield above rainfed yields. The optimal N level for maximum productivity varied not only between the irrigation levels, but also exhibited interannual variability for the same irrigation level, indicating that these variables are impacted by the climatic conditions.
Civil and Environmental Engineering", "2. Field experiments were conducted in the 2011 and 2012 growing seasons to measure grain yield and quantify ETc, irrigation water use efficiency (IWUE), and crop water use efficiency (CWUE) as well as develop irrigation-yield production functions (IYPF) and evapotranspiration-yield production functions (ETYPF) for three PPDs and planting dates under subsurface drip irrigation and rainfed conditions in south central Nebraska. Plant growth and development indicators [leaf area index (LAI) and plant height] were quantified. Three PPDs [59,300, 74,100, and 88,900 plants per hectare (pph)] and three planting dates (May 4, 16, and 23 in 2011, and April 24, May 8, and May 17 in 2012) were implemented. Planting date and PPD had mixed effects on ETc, which ranged from 423 to 577 mm under irrigated conditions and from 355 to 501 mm under rainfed conditions. In 2011 under irrigated conditions, maize ETc increased with delaying the planting date under 59,300 PPD, while it decreased with delaying the planting date under 88,900 PPD. Under 74,100 PPD, the lowest ETc of 507 mm was observed for the 2nd planting (May 16), and the highest ETc of 563 mm was observed under late planting in 2011. In 2012, ETc varied from 466 to 577 mm under irrigated conditions and from 355 to 501 mm under rainfed conditions. Maize ETc decreased with delaying the planting date under 88,900 PPD, and the May 8 planting resulted in the lowest ETc under 74,100 PPD. The 59,300 PPD had the highest ETc with the May 8 planting. Based on the pooled data of all PPDs, every 10-day delay (relative to the 1st planting) in planting date in a wet year (2011) did not affect ETc and resulted in only a 1 mm increase in ETc (ETc = 0.0746 x DOY + 505.53), whereas in a dry year (2012) every 10-day delay resulted in a substantial increase in ETc of 26 mm (ETc = 2.5887 x DOY + 134.87) beyond the intercept. Overall, grain yield increased with increasing PPD relative to the 1st planting by 15.9%, 12.2%, and 12.7% for 59,300, 74,100, and 88,900 PPD, respectively, under irrigated conditions and by 7.7%, 2.9%, and 5.6% for the same PPDs, respectively, under rainfed conditions. Overall, the impact of planting date on grain yield varied with the PPD and year and with rainfed or irrigated conditions. However, in general, each one-day delay in the planting date (from May 4) resulted in an average yield increase of 0.043 ton ha-1 (yield = 0.0428 x DOY + 7.3104) in a wet year (2011), and each one-day delay in the planting date in 2012 (from April 24) resulted in an average yield increase of 0.056 ton ha-1 (yield = 0.0555 x DOY + 2.4753) beyond the intercept. In the dry year, the late planting under rainfed conditions resulted in a substantial yield decrease with increasing PPD, with 16% and 10% yield reductions under the 74,100 and 88,900 PPDs, respectively, relative to 59,300 PPD. IWUE varied from 1.20 kg m-3 for the 1st planting with 88,900 PPD to 5.12 kg m-3 for the 3rd planting with 88,900 PPD in 2011, and from 1.63 kg m-3 for the 1st planting with 59,300 PPD to as high as 5.22 kg m-3 for the 1st planting with 74,100 PPD in 2012. In both years, CWUE values were very similar between treatments, ranging from 2.27 kg m-3 for the 3rd planting with 59,300 PPD to 2.81 kg m-3 for the 1st planting with 59,300 PPD. The IYPF and ETYPF exhibited intra-annual and inter-annual variation between planting dates and planting densities.
We aim to interrogate the tasks assigned to soil-water standards during the 2005–2020 timeframe and identify soil-water effects under selected soil-water GAEC topics. The farm-level and landscape-scale effects were weighed for each standard. The investigation included an extensive meta-review of documents that featured scientific work on sustainable practice. In each GAEC document, soil-water sustainability was weighed vis-a-vis carbon farming. Our main finding was that the identification of soil-water effects within GAEC was addressed both at farm-enterprise level (E) and landscape scale (L). This identification was very similar among the sampled Member States (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia). A small differentiation was detected in how exact the guidance under each standard was in each of these Member States, and hence how the prioritization was scored, ranging from 1, most influential, to 5, least influential. The scores that prevailed were 2.5–5 on the part of the scoring instrument. Operational tools that provide watering recommendations to end-users are needed. This work presents a new tool, Irrigation-Advisor (IA), which is based on weather forecasts and is able to separately determine soil evaporation and crop transpiration, and thus is adaptable to a broad range of agricultural situations. By calculating several statistical indicators, IA was tested against the FAO-56 crop evapotranspiration (ETcFAO) methodology using local crop coefficients. Additionally, IA recommendations were compared with current standard practices by experienced farmers (F). Six field experiments with four widely cultivated species (endive, lettuce, muskmelon and potato) were performed in Southeast Spain. Irrigation water applied, crop yield, aboveground biomass and water productivity were determined. Crop water needs underestimations (5%–20%) were detected when comparing IA against ETcFAO, although the index of agreement proved reasonable adjustments. The IA recommendations led to water savings up to 13% when compared to F, except for lettuce, with a 31% surplus in irrigation when using IA. Crop yield was not compromised and water productivity was increased by IA. Therefore, IA mimicked the farmers′ irrigation strategies fairly well without deploying sensors on-site. Nevertheless, improvements are needed for increasing the accuracy of IA estimations.

Water-use efficiency", "0106 biological sciences", "2. Field experiments were conducted during 2004-09 to study the effect of tillage, rotation and crop residues on wheat yield, nitrogen fertilizer and water use efficiency and SOC under semi-arid condition in north-west Pakistan. The treatments consisted of three rotations: i) Wheat-fallow-wheat (farmers' practice) ii) Wheat- summer legume-wheat and iii) Wheat-summer cereal-wheat with two tillage and crop residues management treatments: i) Tillage (crop residues removed) and Tillage (crop residues retained) and ii) No-tillage (crop residues removed) and No-tillage (crop residues retained). Basal doses of N 60 : P 60 (kg ha -1 ) to wheat, N 90 : to wheat as an aqueous solution in micro plot within each treatment plot. Changes in soil water storage were monitored with neutron moisture probe for calculation of WUE. The results revealed that the wheat grain and straw yield was not increased by the tillage treatment. Crop residues retention significantly enhanced the wheat grain and straw yield. Crop residues with no-tillage resulted in 520 kg ha -1 greater wheat grain yield than residues removed treatment. Similarly WUE, N yield and fertilizer N utilization by wheat was increased significantly by crop residues under no-tillage compared to the tillage treatment. Maximum N fertilizer utilization 24.1 %, 62.7 % and 38.0 % in wheat were obtained under no-tillage + residues treatment during 2006, 2007 and 2008 respectively. The SOC in surface soil (0-15 cm) was higher in wheat-fallow-wheat and wheat-legume-wheat rotation under no-tillage + residues treatment. It remains
unclear whether drought priming at the early growth stage can be employed to alleviate drought stress during
the post-anthesis drought period and improve water productivity (WP) in cowpea.
In the poorly studied Irano-Turanian gypsum deserts, knowledge of the ecohydrological strategies of different plant species is essential to understand community complexity in these vulnerable ecosystems. We studied the ecohydrological strategies of five co-existing subshrub members of Caryophyllales, ascertaining if their rooting architecture, gypsum affinity or photosynthetic pathway determined their water uptake, and if gypsum crystallisation water could be a relevant water source for plants in different seasons. We conducted soil and xylem sampling for isotope analyses in spring and summer and extracted water by cryogenic vacuum distillation. Oxygen and hydrogen isotope compositions were determined and compared with visual representation and Bayesian Mixing Models to determine species ecohydrological strategies. Species – season interactions were related to differences in xylem sap isotopic composition. Three basic strategies relying on contrasting the use of free topsoil moisture and deep soil water could be detected and were in part explained by rooting architecture. Plant gypsum affinity and photosynthetic pathways did not have a significant effect on the water sources used by the plants.

Water-use efficiency", "0106 biological sciences", "evapotranspiration", "F06 Irrigation", "01 natural sciences", "Modelling", "Weather forecasting", "weather forecasts", "water-use efficiency", "Soil water balance", "2. It remains
unclear whether drought priming at the early growth stage can be employed to alleviate drought stress during
the post-anthesis drought period and improve water productivity (WP) in cowpea.
2. Such information is conductive for optimizing WUE and N nutrition of crops in a future water-limited and CO2-enriched environment
N nutrition", "2. FENACORE. SHui (Soil Hydrology research platform underpinning innovation) ran from September 2018 to August 2022 to address best use of soil and water in European and Chinese cropping systems via transdisciplinary research from plot to regional scales. Combining long-term experiments and modelling analysis at different scales evaluated the impact of Best Management Practices (BMPs) on water-limited crop productivity and soil retention, including socio-economic issues. The project also developed tools to facilitate implementation of soil and water saving technologies in specific farming situations. The objective of this in-person meeting in Brussels is to present the main project findings to stakeholders and policy makers, as well as to discuss in a round table the issues related to use of scarce water resources in agriculture. This project is co-funded by the European Commission within H2020 Framework Programme (Project: 773903). A field experiment was established and measurements performed from November 2022 to March 2023 at Koussin lélé, Cove district, using a split-plot experimental design. The main plot was assigned to water management technologies that included continuous flooding and two thresholds of periodic drying irrigation to 15 cm and 25 cm soil depth. The subplot was assigned to the nitrogen fertilizer regime which includes 90 kg ha-1 (farmer’s practice) and 120 kg ha-1 (enhanced amount of fertilizer). Based on biweekly conducted manual closed chamber (A: 0.16m2; V:0.16m3) measurements of evapotranspiration (ET) and CO2 exchange (ecosystem respiration (Reco) and net ecosystem exchange (NEE)), the seasonal dynamics in WUE were assessed as canopy (cWUE) and ecosystem water use efficiency (eWUE), respectively. Canopy gas exchange measurements were performed using a novel, low-cost ET and CO2 flux logger system (Macagga et al. 2024; RelatedIdentifier TAB1). Measured CO2 and ET fluxes were calculated using a modular R script described in detail by Hoffmann et al. (2015; Reco/NEE; RelatedIdentifier TAB2) and Dahlmann et al. (2022; ET; RelatedIdentifier TAB3). In addition to cWUE and eWUE, the crop season WUE was calculated as grain (gWUE) and biomass water use efficiency (bWUE). Results showed that the maximum grain yield (6.19 Mg ha-1) was observed for the continuous flooding rice cultivation receiving 120 Kg N ha-1 even though it was only 6.9 % higher than the yield recorded for the periodic drying at -15cm. The cWUE and eWUE followed the same pattern but were generally higher for periodic drying at -15cm under N90 with 2.63 g C (Kg H2O)-1 d-1 and 1.25 g C (Kg H2O)-1 d-1 respectively. Furthermore, this particular treatment also recorded the highest values for all the cumulative WUE parameters. Our findings emphasize the adoption of the periodic drying irrigation regime with an application rate of N90 Kg. ha-1 for more sustainable irrigated rice production.
