This expansion has been enabled by improved soy varieties and greater agricultural flexibility, allowing for practices such as double-cropping. Being able to model recent past areal expansion and productivity increase of these cropping systems requires a good assessment of their productivity and environmental externalities (e.g., soil organic carbon, soil erosion, nutrient leaching) under alternative management practices.  To assess the productivity and environmental impacts of soybean production systems in Brazil, we employed a gridded modelling framework EPIC-IIASA GGCM, based on the process-based model EPIC (Environmental Policy Integrated Climate, https://epicapex.tamu.edu/about/epic). The analysis included key cropping systems and conservation practices commonly used in Brazil today: soy mono-cropping, no-till double cropping with corn, and no-till soy cultivation with pearl millet cover cropping. Additionally, we evaluated the role of irrigation and cultivar transitions as management options to support the sustainable transformation of soybean production.  Simulations were conducted on a 0.5\u00b0 resolution grid covering the period from 1982 to 2016, contributing to Deliverable 6.1, \u201cNon-food biomass production based on biophysical modelling\u201d, developed under the CLEVER project (Creating Leverage to Enhance Biodiversity Outcomes of Global Biomass Trade), funded by the Horizon Europe programme (Topic: HORIZON-CL6-2021-BIODIV-01-15, Project Number: 101060765). Among other goals, the CLEVER project seeks to enhance biodiversity outcomes through improved modelling of global biomass trade. Variable definitions can be found here: \u00a0https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15276082  In Frick (Switzerland), a long-term experiment was established at the farm of the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) in autumn 2002 on a clay loam (Stagnic Eutric Cambisol). In this three-factorial experiment, a reduced tillage system with a chisel plough to a depth of 10 cm is compared to conventional ploughing to a depth of approx. 20 cm, a liquid manure system is compared to a compost manure system and the adding of biodynamic preparations is compared to none preparations. Biodynamic preparations had been assessed previously in system comparison experiments, however, their effect is difficult to elucidate separately in a system comparison approach. One reason for setting up this experiment was therefore a demand among farmers and researchers in early 2000 to disentangle the influence of biodynamic preparations from the influence of manure compost on soil fertility. On the other hand, it should be tested if and how reduced tillage is feasible in organic farming.\u00a0This dataset consists of plot data for yield, soil and management from 2002 to 2018. The crop rotation at the start of the experiment was winter wheat, sunflower, spelt and two years of grass clover. Sunflower was excluded after 2010 because of total yield loss due to slugs. For yield, total aboveground plant biomass is given for silage maize, grass-clover and cover crops, grain yield for winter wheat, spelt and sunflowers. Total nitrogen and phosphorus contents of the yield components are given as well.  Weed data is given as total weed cover and/or total weed biomass in the years with row crops. For pests and diseases, Fusarium toxins (DON) are given for 2003 and slug emergence for 2010.  For soil data, soil organic carbon content, total nitrogen content and pH are given plotwise for the layers 0-10 cm and 10-20 cm in three year intervals generally. Bulk density is available for some years and plots. Five field campaigns (November, March, April, May, and June) were conducted during the 2016-2017 agricultural season and two (November and April) during the 2017-2018 agricultural season. Each campaign took four-five days to complete. A hierarchical sampling strategy, consisting of three levels, was adopted: Unit (a single commercial agricultural field), Elementary Sampling Unit (ESU; a 20 \u00d7 20 m plot), and Elementary Sub-Sampling Unit (ESSU; a particular location in the ESU where measurement is taken). Six Units were selected for sampling during each agricultural season. Different number of ESUs were sampled in each Unit depending of its size and diversity of soils. The location of the ESUs was kept unchanged during the season except in case relocation was needed due to waterlogging. The geographic coordinates were measured each time an ESU was visited, irrespective of whether it was relocated or not and a unique ID assigned to the ESU. Thus, data from each visit are presented as a separate independent record (row) in the dataset. In each ESU there were 3 ESSUs, one at the center and two at opposite corners of the ESU. The biological yield was measured only in the central ESSU. The dataset contains only data averaged at ESU level. Two unique identifiers, Unit_ID and ESU_ID, were used across the dataset's tables, helping identify data records and connect tables. The Unit_ID consists of the season and the Unit number, for instance \u201cS16-17_U1\u201d, where \u201cS16-17\u201d is the agricultural season 2016-2017, and \u201cU1\u201d is Unit 1. The ESU_ID consists of the month and year of the field campaign, the Unit number, and the ESU number, for instance \u201capr2017_1_2\u201d, where \u201capr2017\u201d is the April 2017 field campaign, \u201c1\u201d is the Unit number, and \u201c2\u201d is the ESU number.   The LAI, fIPAR, FAPAR, and fCover were measured using AccuPAR LP-80 ceptometer. The CC was measured using CCM-300. The AGB and plant nitrogen samples were collected from a 1 m x 1 m plot at the central ESSU and 50 cm x 50 cm plots in the other two ESSUs. The nitrogen (N) content of the above-ground organs was determined by the Kjeldahl method and expressed as per-cent of the dry weight. N uptake (g m-2) was determined as the product of N content and the dry AGB. Soil moisture content (W) was measured gravimetrically at the surface (0-5 cm) and, in some ESUs, at three additional depths (0-30 cm, 30-60 cm, and 60-100 cm) in 10 cm increments. The data were expressed in percent by mass. Reflectance data was collected using ASD FieldSpec 4 HiRes Field Spectrometer (ASD HH FS4 HiRes). Crop phenology was reported after Zadoks et al. (1974). The damages and weeds status were assessed using five-point rating scales.   The data from the four soil profiles included morphological description of soil horizons, texture (the particle-size distribution was determined by sieving and the pipette method in accordance with ISO 11277-2020), concentration of organic carbon, pH, bulk density, water retention at suctions from 0.25 kPa (pF 0.4) to 33 kPa (pF 2.7), total porosity. Soil water retention curves (pF curves) were obtained during the drainage of the samples by using the suction plate method, pressure membrane apparatus, and desiccators methods, as described in (Rousseva et al., 2017). The field capacity (FC) was estimated by the water content retained at a suction of 10 kPa (pF = 2.0). The wilting point was estimated at a suction 1500 kPa (pF = 4.2). The water retention experimental data at different suctions were approximated with the van Genuchten equation (Van Genuchten, 1980).  The crop calendar and management data included information for the studied winter wheat fields, including soil type, predecessor, pre-sowing preparation, variety, sowing date and norm, dates and type of fertilization, plant protection measures, dates of the main development stages of winter wheat, harvesting date and yield. \u00a0\u00a0  Multispectral image mosaics of the studied fields were generated using the fixed-wing drone eBee Ag furnished with Sequoia camera. The camera has Multi-channel sensor with green (550 nm), red (660 nm), red edge (735 nm), and NIR (790 nm) bands.  Meteorological data were collected by an automatic telemetric agro-meteorological station ADCON addVantage Pro6.5 installed in the vicinity of the town of Knezha. The station operated between 30.11.2016 and 22.03.2017 on its initial location (Location 1: 43.521917\u00b0N, 24.098848\u00b0E) and was later moved to another location, 1.3 km southwards (Location 2: 43.511391\u00b0N, 24.092252\u00b0E), where it collected data between 26.04.2017 and 3.12.2018. The station was equipped with sensors for air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed, wind direction, rain, PAR, soil moisture and temperature (12 depths between 5 cm and 115 cm at 10 cm intervals). Therefore, this vegetable long-term fertilization experiment can be used to investigate different plant-soil-systems under the same climatic conditions. The experimented was halted in 2022. The experimental site (52\u00b021\u201901.30\u2019\u2019 N, 13\u00b019\u201905.47\u2019\u2019 E, 50 m a.s.l.) is located in the transition zone between the more maritime-affected Northern German Plain and the continental climate of the European mainland. Weather data were collected in an agrometeorological station close to the experimental area. The long-term means (1991-2020) for air temperature and annual precipitation are 9.7 \u00b0C and 492 mm. The single plots are quadratic concrete boxes with walls of 10 cm thickness, a surface area of 4 m2 and a depth of 75 cm. The upper 50 cm are filled with the tested soils; the lower 25 cm comprises a coarse-sandy drainage layer. The three soil types are Arenic Luvisol (weak loamy sand), Gleyic Fluvisol (heavy sandy loam) and Luvic-Phaeozem (medium clayey silt) according to the World Reference Base \u2013 WRB (and the Bodenkundliche Kartieranleitung \u2013 KA4). Within 10 rotations, the vegetable species white cabbage (Brassica oleracea L. var. capitata f. alba), carrot (Daucus carota L.), cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), leek (Allium porrum L.) and celery (Apium graveolens L. var. rapaceum Mill.) were cultivated. No celery was cultivated during the first rotation. The experiment consists of 12 fertilization treatments in different combinations of mineral N fertilization and organic amendments and as quadruplicate for each of the three soils. The experimental set-up scheme can be found in the supplementary material. Mineral N fertilizer was applied as calcium ammonium nitrate. Mineral P and K fertilization was uniform for all treatments. Total N and total C in soil, plant and organic amendments were determined using a CNS analyser VARIO El (Elemental Hanau) since 1995 and before by wet combustion with K2Cr2O7 und H2SO4. C and N in the soil samples and N in the plant samples were analysed annually. The C contents of the crop residues (leaf + stalk + root) of the five vegetable species were investigated irregularly. The soil is a loess chernozem over limestone with an effective rooting depth of 100 cm, containing 22% clay, 70% silt and 8% sand in the ploughed upper (Ap) horizon. It has a neutral pH (7.0\u20137.4) and an appropriate P and K supply (45\u201370 mg kg-1 and 130\u2013185 mg kg-1 in calcium-acetate-lactate extract, respectively). The 1980\u20132010 annual average temperature was 9.7\u00b0C, and the average annual precipitation was 511 mm. On five large parcels in strip split plot design (1.2 ha each, main plots) the individual crops grain maize (Zea mays), winter wheat (Triticum aestivum), winter barley (Hordeum vulgare), winter rapeseed (Brassica napus ssp. napus), and winter wheat are rotated on the main plots and grown in parallel. All crop residues remain on the fields.
